Gorman On Gore EP10 - 28 Days Later (2002)
Show Notes Transcript

The movie that put fast zombies on the map, and single-handedly revived the entire zombie horror subgenre! Join us as we discuss Danny Boyle’s gritty UK infection freakout film, 28 Days Later. Rage, rage against the dying of the genre! We also spend entirely too much time discussing Zack Snyder, and Jacob’s dog. It only recently occurred to us that the completeness of our reviews might make us an aid to the visually impaired. Are we just putting out overlong commentary tracks? You decide! We hope you enjoy the sound of Clover chewing on a squeak toy. Enjoy, and don’t get bitten.

hello and welcome back to another episode of gorman on gore a podcast
0:42
about horror films i am peter gorman your host with me as always is my
0:47
co-host jacob say hello jacob uh hey
0:53
what's up also say hello to jacob's dog clover
0:58
oh yeah he's getting real h hey
1:05
jesus christ are
1:11
she was completely fine until i started talking it's just like the act of talking
1:17
yeah it's very upsetting to a dog having you interact with anything other than the dog
1:27
all right have a nice drink of water there then this it will work itself out
1:34
one day i will get you to just put i'm starting to think we should put like blankets over your whole apartment or
1:39
you know wherever the hell you are just over everything again
1:45
over living a little kid you know with like a yeah a blanket roof
1:54
i will actually have to put you outside if you keep this up i'm very sorry well
2:00
you know there is a dog here as well my nephew's dog uh i can't think i think of her name well
2:06
whatever anyway she makes a lot of noise too but hopefully it won't come in on this mic
2:13
yeah this is really more of a me problem oh i'm not going to leave all this stuff
2:19
wouldn't that be great though if like we never even have the episode we just like just sit just listen to your dog for
2:24
like an hour no okay okay i'm sorry for the breaker do you have to keep the dog out of your
2:30
hand it's weirder if it's not because well you just have me reacting to like
2:37
well i mean a lot of sound editing stuff will deaden noises but it won't get rid of
2:42
everything especially like clicky noises and clover is definitely making some clicky noises
2:48
yeah but yeah it will be weird if if we fix this later and be like oh man this dog
2:53
and it's just like you hear dead silence yeah i don't know if you ever watch like a
2:59
youtube video and there's there's always somebody who's just like oh wait i gotta stop the plane's flying overhead
3:06
yeah they always fix it so then it just sounds insane they're just like just dead silence while they just like sit
3:11
there and look uncomfortable yeah well if you fixed it you should have cut that part out
3:25
okay so anyway talk about movies or something
3:31
so how many of these have we done now six or seven i think sounds about right
3:36
needless to say i'm still working out the kinks i'm in washington state and jacobs is down in california so if
3:44
our audio sounds kind of weird it's probably a combination of the relative weirdness of our setup and my complete
3:50
lack of experience in audio engineering be that as you may i'm really enjoying figuring it out and
3:56
i hope the listeners out there are enjoying themselves too hand over heart oh we're just
4:02
we're just so honored you chose us yeah and someone listens to podcasts
4:08
myself i i love this kind of thing all right it's like it's like it's like
4:14
the best part of a podcast is where we get highly derailed yeah
4:19
for those of you new to our podcast we dive into horror films we spoil every
4:24
little detail we pick it apart and we rate it on a scale of one to ten
4:30
we alternate jacob and i who picks the next horror film to watch each time we do we try to choose
4:36
something different from the one we just watched just to keep things fresh and interesting for our listeners
4:42
and perhaps more importantly for ourselves i mean right
4:49
yeah yeah i had the pic yeah so i picked for today's episode and i was thinking we
4:55
are way overdue to do a zombie movie i mean right this deep in i mean i
5:03
yeah i mean i suppose so but i've never been like i guess i'm not really a zombie guy
5:09
really yeah i mean i probably would have just never picked a zombie movie if you hadn't done it wow okay i'm sort of an
5:17
old school zombie boy where you know i grew up with all the originals i briefly had
5:23
a disenchantment with the fast zombies but i think i i've warmed up to them in the last couple of years
5:30
okay honestly i prefer zombies that aren't well explained there's there's two kinds of zombies essentially there's infected
5:36
zombies you know it's a biological thing this is much more modern where they try to explain it kinda
5:42
and then there's just sort of magical voodoo zombies and that's really more my jam
5:47
i'm all about zombies that don't make sense no yeah i mean zombies are kind of
5:53
ridiculous concept so don't like the more you try and explain them the more you
5:59
get me at like thinking and asking questions which are
6:04
invariably silly and illogical yeah
6:10
speaking of which yeah but nevertheless i mean what sort of self-respecting horror cast omits such a cornerstone of
6:16
the genre i mean we got to do it okay no i mean fair enough i'm just saying okay
6:23
you know i'm not a big zombie guy so for this week i chose return of the living dead colon brave to
6:31
the grave just kidding i chose 28 days later
6:37
you know i oh man okay like let's let's start this off on the right foot
6:43
i might have preferred that oh really oh yeah
6:50
for being entirely honest here
6:58
[Music]
7:07
[Music] wow
7:38
[Music]
7:43
i've got some bad news they're infected infested
7:49
infected with flux i shouldn't have done that
7:55
something in the blood [Music]
8:08
hello
8:16
see this is a really [ __ ] idea you know why this is obviously a [ __ ] idea we have to
8:22
leave always do
8:32
[Music]
8:38
[Music] they're dead and you're gonna be next
8:46
[Music]
8:52
i remember there was one that uvol however you say his name he made a like a dance party zombie movie i couldn't
8:59
remember the title of it if i had i would have said that instead uh
9:05
house of the dead i want to say house of the dead that might be it yeah yeah that one's fun because it uh when
9:12
they're killing zombies they'll put up little like clips from the game uh in all its low resolution glory
9:20
yeah oh my god that just that really sounds dreadful really
9:26
yeah it's a really uh brilliant artistic choice on his part brave honestly
9:32
and also just to point it out that's jacob's dog chewing on a chew toy
9:37
it's not an animal dying in the background no not this time
9:44
yeah not not yet oh god we okay okay
9:50
like new rule we actually like can't reference the dog because that
9:56
just excites her more and then she comes over here it was like i mean i may i love her but it's like
10:03
you were doing so well just sleeping on the bed
10:12
maybe it like eventually will become like a dr demento show where we just have silly sound effects for everything and you
10:18
know maybe then we will just have a squeak toy in the background yeah
10:24
we'll figure it out so the days are numbered jacob
10:29
that's the very literal tagline of this movie oh
10:34
man i love that that's the most humdrum normal sounding
10:40
thing ever oh god i thought you were like i thought you were making a joke no i
10:46
thought you were like setting up something funny let me forget no i don't do anything
10:52
funny jacob i mean come on let's be serious here yeah that's the tagline
10:58
yeah i was baffled when i thought i just love that it's just so deadpan it's also a fact the days
11:04
are numbered yep so yeah well i just mean also days the days of
11:11
our lives of the world are numbered i guess that's true it's almost like a
11:16
bizarre philosophical point like yeah i suppose we do you know no matter what we do our days are numbered
11:23
really makes you think all right so we got some great young
11:28
british stars to be in this one we got uh cillian murphy before he was in every uh
11:34
christopher nolan film we have naomi harris before she became money penny in the daniel craig bond
11:41
movies i feel like i've seen her on other things i must have seen naomi harris in at
11:47
least one other thing and indeed you have because she's very identical identifiable
11:54
yeah i mean whatever it wasn't a very interesting story i'm sorry i shared it
11:59
no i wasn't mocking you i just mean like that's kind of how i was too because when i was watching the movie because when i first saw this movie years ago
12:06
i i didn't know any of these people they were they were unknowns on purpose to add to the immersion or at least for a
12:12
while and then brendan gleason shows up later spoiler alert yeah but at least for a while you're
12:18
like wow this could be like real people but going back and watching this it is very funny to be like hey it's silly and
12:24
murphy and naomi yeah from james bond
12:30
oh yeah christopher eccleston it's like now it just feels like jesus they were
12:35
just like casting everyone yeah christopher eccleston before he played destro in that horrible gi joe
12:41
movie christopher before he played the dark elf malekith
12:46
in the worst thor movie i was gonna say yeah the one marvel movie everyone forgets about it yeah
12:54
and lastly christopher eccleston before he burned bridges with the doctor who people okay you know what
13:00
that might be controversial i'm actually not sure yeah that might not be true yeah
13:07
yeah i was going to ask did he but then i didn't want to like actually talk about dr hill like no that's not touch that that's
13:13
radioactive hey yeah sir please this is a civilized podcast we do not
13:19
mention christopher eccleston no i used to like talking about doctor who because i just don't like doctor who
13:26
very much oh no see now you've done it you touched the third rail
13:31
oh yeah whatever get mad sorry no idea i don't like it either so you
13:38
can hate both of us it's fine i mean it's okay yeah my family will put it on for the
13:44
christmas episodes for some reason we like we don't watch the rest of them we just watched these weird things out of context and we're like that's kind of
13:49
cute and british huh maybe that's just our fault that's kind of interesting
13:55
yeah no that's not like a tradition for us it's
14:00
like oh man oh yeah i forgot the yeah there's like a special
14:06
nerd term for uh people like doctor who yeah whovians at least i think yeah
14:13
yeah okay so before we get into the details
14:19
would you recommend this movie jacob yeah i suppose so i mean like i mean
14:24
like yeah again not a big zombie guy but they mean there are moments to it okay
14:31
i will say this all the scenes i really like in this movie are the ones that don't have
14:37
zombies in them you know i know like i'll say this
14:43
if the movie was just that beginning part with the uh the famous opening like yeah
14:50
shot and then just four people chilling out in the british countryside during the apocalypse going around doing stuff it'd
14:57
be like yeah sure you know this is actually pretty good it's like a euro art film
15:04
yeah but then like the movie takes a turn later on and i'm just like i'm just not into this oh wow that's very
15:10
interesting yeah i absolutely would recommend this movie i love it actually but
15:17
i think it might have just been because it hit me at a certain time well i don't know i think it also speaks
15:22
maybe to the the kinds of horror movies i like and it's a very specific thing
15:27
and i have trouble describing it but it's sort of like when there's a real clear good and evil
15:34
in the film it doesn't necessarily mean like good wizards or you know or some kind of
15:39
force for good but what i mean is they're both very well developed you know like there's a
15:45
balance to badness and goodness in a movie where bad things happen
15:50
i really enjoy that so okay yeah i think i get what you mean yeah
15:56
i don't know maybe i'm just mean i like movies that are melodramatic i'm not sure do you mean like when there is like an
16:02
equal force of good that is combating the evil in some way rather than just like i do like people around
16:08
killing people well no i guess more i don't know i guess i i mean it more of a symbolic way
16:13
i just mean like there's a real bad habit especially in old horror films older horror films
16:20
where they just set up a bunch of bad people that you hate just so that you can kind of relish
16:27
watching them die horribly yeah and there is a place yeah
16:32
but i like it i like it when uh
16:37
also to be clear my place is uh in the garbage bin hey i like some of them you know i mean
16:44
i i want a certain amount of humanity but also i i do like it when people try to make a point so i don't know maybe i
16:49
just like it when it's just a little bit either philosophical or magical or abstract it doesn't have to be any one
16:56
particular thing but yes i also do like it when there's literally a magical force of good in an evil movie
17:03
that is a super narrow genre i think i can only think of like a handful of movies when that happens
17:09
or at least yeah it happens that it's good it almost never happens
17:15
remember like in the craft when the main character i was gonna say nev campbell but no she wasn't the main
17:20
character whoever the main character lady is she runs into the witch store and
17:25
that lady is just a witch and she has powers and they don't even really talk about it she's just like hey come hang
17:31
out in my seal in the back room i'll keep you safe from your suicide thoughts that like your evil friends are giving
17:37
you or whatever and then she just leaves for no reason so i mean it's almost unrelated it's
17:42
just like oh well this is apparently a thing also i'm here i'm not going to help you or anything but
17:49
it's just like to establish that it exists sure yeah
17:54
i don't know maybe i've lost my point anyway in this movie i just like that the people uh
18:00
they're very real feeling to me they feel very real and they have nice perspectives you know in
18:08
a movie that is so ridiculously bleak it is also unbelievably hopeful which i really
18:15
enjoy yeah it's a weird bittersweet sex i guess you know
18:20
yeah also yeah this is the movie that got me into uh godspeed you black emperor
18:27
because they have their song east hastings in this at the beginning oh yeah and like all of their songs it's
18:32
like 20 minutes long and it goes on forever so they had to just cut the hell out of it just to make it fit the scene
18:39
yeah actually i think i did i bought the soundtrack to this movie trying to find that song and then it wasn't even in
18:45
there because apparently they only had the rights to use the song in the movie but not in the album
18:52
oh man that's not suck that's like why you would buy that soundtrack yes that's true however all the other
18:58
songs are pretty nice too or at least most of them so i don't feel bad i still own that album
19:03
yeah no i mean like there are good songs in the movie i'm just saying that like if you're getting the soundtrack it is
19:09
almost certainly because you saw that same right absolutely yeah although if there was a sean of the
19:15
dead scene you know where we're choosing records to fling at a zombie i mean i might fling the 28 days later album and
19:21
not feel bad about it yeah if i had it physically i bought it on itunes and this is back in like early
19:28
itunes i think it was i want to say like it can't have been 1996 right maybe it
19:34
was it was really early i'm just going to like play for my own
19:39
bad memory and say it was early 2000s oh no it has to have been because the movie came out in 2002. so no yeah it's
19:45
got to have been yeah you know what yeah never mind what i said earlier that's not true
19:53
so without further ado let's get into it shall we uh yes let us
19:59
sink our teeth into this movie thank you jacob
20:05
yeah no probable man truly you are the wind beneath my legs
20:11
[Laughter] there's a false start right at the beginning which i love i don't know why
20:18
i like a little bit of misdirection but i think that's fun you know where they're just showing all this riot footage and you think like all these
20:23
other classic zombie movies that's usually how it starts right yeah they feel very uh zach snyder
20:32
uh yeah you know what his movie came out just two years after this one so
20:38
i would say that like most of zack snyder's things he probably took almost all of his better ideas from this movie
20:44
yeah yeah i believe that it's important to me to throw some zack snyder's shade now that he's been allowed to make yet another cut of one
20:51
of his wretched dc movies oh man someone's got to stop this man
20:57
oh boy i mean actually like admire him at the at this point i guess man imagine
21:04
getting warner brothers uh to shovel up the money to make a
21:09
four-hour long justice league movie after did the first one even do that well i don't think it did i mean it did okay
21:16
yeah but it's like there's something to that i mean like you're just like if nothing else you
21:23
have to admire the uh the fan tenacity yeah look who's come crawling back
21:29
i like here like here's the thing i'm absolutely going to
21:34
watch that all four hours of it it hasn't come out yet so yeah
21:41
yeah and like here's the thing it's probably going to be bad
21:46
but how funny would it be if it was actually good oh man yeah like if it's like the best
21:52
movie ever no or even just like a really good superhero movie and and then it's like
21:59
zack snyder is completely vindicated and we all have to eat [ __ ] oh i i do
22:06
not accept that that reality i i can't imagine that happening oh but then what if something
22:13
would be probably good i know but yeah it would be really funny it would kind of blow my mind
22:19
yeah we all just kind of have to admit damn it
22:24
okay so maybe the problem with these other movies is that zack snyder just didn't have enough control he was
22:30
misunderstood the whole time yes like you mentioned this being the first
22:36
of many smear cuts oh god he's going to go back and fix them all
22:41
one by one that could be our uh
22:47
our reality our hell i want to remake 300 but i want them to hate the persians even more
22:56
you got it zack snyder all right anyway this is not the podcast for that
23:02
okay also i am so sorry i do have another reference to zack snyder coming up so like this is not over well i mean
23:09
he did make dawn of the dead which came out soon after this film so i feel like you can try to twist it in that way if
23:14
you want well sneak it in yeah
23:20
so yeah there's footage of violence and confusion it turns out to be playing on
23:25
it looks like seven monitors for a chimpanzee strapped to a table in a real grim looking lab
23:33
yeah i like it because it's like a 90s future lab what i mean is if you've ever
23:38
seen a bad 90s movie of like an evil guy like an evil corporation or an evil lab it
23:45
always looks like this where it's like a lot of grays and just darkness
23:51
yeah i was gonna say it felt very uh early resident evil the movies should be quite happy about
23:58
the games i don't even know how the early resident evils looked i didn't play any of them until four
24:04
i think really there was an offended silence from jacob
24:10
no no i was just a little bit more really surprised i feel like i don't want to feel like people uh at
24:18
least got to start with like two yeah i don't know if i had the proper console i don't know
24:23
i was poor and wretched yeah so uh i even when i had the right console i didn't always have the right money so there you go
24:31
i don't want to start things off with an obscure tangent another obscure tangent but almost the same scenario as this
24:38
scene happened in the street fire film from the 1990s when blanca is getting brainwashed by
24:45
evil footage oh my god you're right yeah and it's like in that movie it's like a
24:51
child designed the the lever or whatever so there's like a good setting and an evil setting
24:58
yeah and that one so like you pull the lever down and it's all violence and war and then when you pull it up it's like
25:04
gandhi and like people laughing and you know all that kind of stuff like martin luther king making a speech
25:10
yeah except this time it's a chimp rather than charlie blanca or whatever
25:18
that guy's name was at the cambridge primate research center
25:26
i only know this because it says it on the security monitor a chimp is laid out flat on a table
25:31
subjected to you know the monitors playing scenes of violence but it's all human related violence which seems weird
25:37
to me because it seems like if you wanted to give evil traits to a chimp you would show
25:42
footage of chimps being mean to each other yeah chimp on chimp violence
25:49
well yeah it's like the chimp's not gonna have any context for any of that stuff yeah i
25:54
mean after watching it he'd just be like man humans suck
26:00
yeah i don't know or maybe the chimps are being trained to kill humans and so he
26:05
wants or you know whoever the scientists want the chimps to be used to struggling
26:11
and screaming people yeah okay so i mean i guess this may be a good
26:17
point to bring this up what is the purpose of making a rage virus
26:26
it's unclear i have some guesses please feel free i'll get to the part where the scientist
26:31
does say a few stumbling words about it so i'll just get to that part so the security monitor shows a bunch of mass
26:37
people break in there's these three eco-terrorists they wander into the lab they take pictures they see the chimps on the
26:44
on the tables there's a dissected one on an operating table anyway a lab technician walks in on them
26:51
while they're already in there and he's got coffee in his hands like a coffee cup so he's just i guess he must have
26:57
been on his break and so he tries to make a break for it and they grab him and they try to explain you know like
27:02
well what are you doing this uh what's going on here and he's like no you can't let the chips out there infected
27:10
and you know it's actually not a super implausible scenario my
27:15
stepdad used to be a caterer at the university of washington and almost every year
27:21
activists would break into the various labs and release animals so it'd be like a flood of like mink or or you know
27:27
whatever just usually rats just like scurrying everywhere
27:32
so it does happen so anyway uh the technician says in order to cure
27:38
you must first understand which can mean a lot of things
27:44
i think he's trying to isolate aggression so that he can remove it
27:50
maybe i guess or at least only good theory i have
27:56
yeah that's like that still feels so clumsy it's like why do you need angry chimpanzees which like first of
28:03
all you can just piss a chimpanzee off why do you why do you need a virus for that just yeah
28:09
so he says in order to cure you must first understand but he doesn't say what he's
28:14
curing so it could be that they're already dealing with a disease they don't know about and he's
28:20
just trying to figure it out or the curing is something bad in ourselves
28:26
and he's fixing something inherently wrong in mammalian nature you know or
28:32
maybe in eight brains maybe he thinks he can yeah yeah like i said isolate aggression or badness or
28:38
something and just but i don't know why you would want to bring it up you know like why would you dial it up to 11 in
28:44
order to remove it yeah speaking of which this is also
28:50
the plotline for shakma the baboons yeah it's true yeah
28:56
they're putting little baboon brain and he's like yeah i don't remember what
29:01
exactly they say but it's it's something along the lines of all right we're gonna get rid of all of his aggression but you
29:07
know it's almost a little bar that they just have flipped the wrong way they're like oh crap we
29:13
screwed it up now he's super aggressive it's like it's like the uh
29:18
episode of the the halloween episode of the simpsons with the evil crusty doll yeah
29:24
somebody flipped this thing yeah oh yeah
29:31
the technician does say the chimps were given an inhibitor it's a shame they didn't have more
29:37
inhibitor on hand i have to say yeah even with an inhibitor the the chimps are losing their minds and they i
29:44
mean spoiler alert for moments later they totally infect these people so i mean what are they inhibiting were they
29:50
even crazier before yeah okay also i will say this
29:55
there are of course ethical concerns with uh freeing animals and whatnot without sure
30:02
any kind of way of care for them yeah and like legal stuff whatever i
30:08
don't care but chimpanzees like even the normal chimpanzee i just
30:13
wouldn't want a free one that just seems like a real bad idea well i would do it from a distance somehow
30:20
like maybe a little like eight times bomb on the lock just so that he'll get out but then i won't be there so he
30:25
won't tear my face off well again it's like even a normal chimpanzee can still
30:31
bite your face off if it just like feels like it yeah i feel like they wouldn't all want to do that because that almost
30:38
felt like a revenge thing for that lady who who brought a birthday cake for another chimp at a chimp reservation
30:44
they were just mad at her and so they took it out on her face i think a regular chimp is i feel that they'd be
30:50
more likely to you know like just casually break your arm and then yank on it you know just like ah yeah
30:57
yeah that seems like a chimp thing to do just like oh wow your arm is weaker than a tree branch
31:04
yeah like that again yeah yeah that sure is funny look what i did yeah
31:09
i hear that a chimp can lift a motorcycle over their heads yeah probably
31:14
so yeah i believe it i never verified it
31:20
i yeah sorry i'd believe it i agree with you i mean there's three eco-terrorists one of them is a girl
31:26
who's has a very soft look to her i mean she's she feels honestly pretty bad when she sees
31:32
these chimps being mistreated but first of all they're chimps and they are dangerous and second of all the
31:39
technician makes it very clear that they are infected with something really really bad you know and
31:46
that they really shouldn't come out yeah okay so i uh i'll drop the other uh
31:51
zack snyder thing here yeah all right demonizing or at least portraying people
31:58
were motivated as being completely naive fools
32:04
it's also a great snack snyder thing to do it is very zack snydery
32:10
i don't know danny boyle i mean before this he did things like train spotting he has kind of uh
32:16
i don't know how to describe it kind of a punk rocky gritty realistic way of directing and and of characterizing
32:22
people i mean personally i didn't pick up the vibe that these people were careless just maybe a little
32:30
yeah maybe a little naive is the worst of it but i mean you can also understand because they're straight up
32:35
cut open chimps on tables i accidentally uh freeze frames at one point and i saw
32:41
a chimp head in a clear basket jesus i know it was a metal basket but
32:46
anyway yeah it's when the technician runs away and they run after him it just like really briefly shows more of the
32:52
lab and there's just like monkey parts all over the place oh i'm sorry ape ape parts
32:58
yeah um you messed up now yeah the chimp's a primate i'm sorry everybody i'm sorry
33:06
so oh yeah and they do ask him well well what's he infected with and he just says really melodramatically
33:13
rage that's great okay i love that it's a great line however
33:19
i feel like he's not uh really selling how dangerous this is
33:25
well he tries i mean especially when they're when they're right about to open it he's just like you have no idea you can't you know
33:31
like that whole thing i guess i mean just like tell them it's an anger virus you know
33:38
yeah it's and that it can infect people like they're biting they have known super
33:46
fast yeah yeah so they open the cage and the chimp immediately just leaps out
33:52
and buries its teeth in the neck of the nice girl who just helped him i assume it's again
33:58
sure she vomits blood she says she's burning her friends knocked the chimp off and
34:05
then when when her friend goes to help her she vomits blood right into his face or maybe she spits blood i mean i'm not
34:11
sure why she does that but it does seem just sort of like it seems almost like an intentional move like meh
34:17
like i said he gets close yeah i the impression not
34:33
of the rage available but actually we'll hear in a sec but yeah i tend to think that a projectile
34:38
blood vomit is part of their their set you know part of their their traits or whatever
34:44
yeah it does seem like they do that a lot it seems almost like it's triggered
34:49
by the presence of people it's like it was designed just to be real super infectious
34:56
so the technician grabs a chair shouting that they have to kill her immediately she leaps on him the camera pans over to
35:03
some chimps and cages as the technician just screams in agony and uh that's the scene everyone's dead
35:12
yep although i think there was three eco-terrorists so i guess one of them could have gotten away
35:18
but i doubt it yeah probably not i mean almost immediately the girl i mean after she
35:23
spits the blood in her friend's face she starts to make you know the weird little noises and the twitches
35:28
she's exhibiting symptoms almost instantaneously although i imagine you think i did get away
35:35
and then you just kind of have to know yeah that he did all of it
35:40
and you could also tell nobody ever because uh probably wouldn't go well for you
35:47
i think if this was a lesser movie they would have done that maybe that guy mark who's later in the movie uh you know
35:52
would be that guy or something oh god yeah yeah it seems like a half writer thing
35:58
to do exactly exactly i mean sometimes for realness you just have to have people just be random people
36:05
yeah so it goes right to a black screen and it just says 28 days later boom right off
36:12
the bat it says the title yeah it says congratulations movie
36:18
i clapped yeah it's the thing it's the thing that
36:24
it's called yeah pointed in the screen like a child
36:30
sillian murphy wakes up naked in a hospital bed and it's like he's like dr manhattan
36:36
style yeah no he's got it's it's a more i don't want to say egregious male nude to the scene i mean
36:42
because that's a weird way to put it but it's let's just say it's more natural
36:47
positioning than you usually see in cinema yeah yeah
36:53
not to go into specifics too much but anyway it's notable to me because every time i see it i always forget that it's
36:58
in the movie and then i'm always shocked i'm just like oh oh my god
37:04
yeah oh my my stars and garters i mean i'm not against it but yeah there
37:11
is something maybe just because you know i'm a child of the 80s that i just assume that male nudity is
37:17
somehow more you know nude yeah i kind of get what you mean
37:23
sounds like you don't well no i uh i mean like
37:28
it's like with the uh like i just said dr manhattan like that was like jesus oh yeah well yeah i
37:36
couldn't believe that does that matter of course yeah i dude i'm sorry i didn't mean to
37:42
i'm gonna do that i'm gonna do that unintentionally another time
37:48
at least once more i just i just know it i've cursed myself
37:54
yeah well i mean i hope so so silly murphy wakes up he's naked he's
37:59
hairy he half of his head is shaved but then it grew back a bit i actually thought that was a really nice touch because it
38:06
shows that it was probably down to the flesh and then it just grew back so he must have been out of you know
38:11
like a super long time well 28 days i guess yeah i was gonna say man
38:21
we should do that throughout the whole thing be like i wonder how long it took 28 days i guess
38:31
oh yeah we have fun here so he's just been laying there for
38:37
however long you know probably that long maybe longer and he's got iv bags in him
38:42
so i think maybe he was kept alive by an iv drip maybe it fed him
38:48
enough i mean i don't know how how often you're supposed to replace
38:53
like saline bags it could be that there's like a real sad story like a prequel where like a nurse
38:59
lady was taking care of him for just weeks and weeks and then she finally just died like that morning
39:05
maybe she's like one of the bodies that you know he steps over later that feels like the plot for if they did like a
39:11
comic book prequel that's just what that would be we just take something that no one even
39:16
cared about or questioned and you're like this really needs to be answered and so here we go
39:23
yeah you will know about this and then you'll never be able to
39:28
unremember it yeah he gets up everything is a mess
39:34
everything is dead quiet hospital is totally abandoned
39:39
and also i love this whole part of the movie because there's no speaking for quite a while i mean i think he says
39:45
hello every now and then you know he calls out to try to find somebody but nobody responds
39:52
i don't remember seeing the scene but at some point he puts on clothing i guess it must be early on because he's got nurses scrubs on after that like the the
39:59
green ones yeah or maybe that's what patients wear because that's what someone else says in
40:05
the movie later i don't know anyway he puts on some clothes and he goes down to the lobby and just tries every pay phone
40:12
i just love that there's like a long line of public pay phones and they're all just hanging off the hook not only do they not work but someone
40:19
had to disdainfully just take them all off the hook like yeah
40:25
i think it's a nice touch he chugs a pepsi tm he finds in front of a broken vending machine
40:32
it is kind of funny they bring it up later how he's just been living off sugar yeah i actually am glad they
40:39
brought that up because it would really suck when you've only got simple carbs you know just empty calories
40:47
you're giving yourself nothing but the thing is that stuff preserves really well so it probably would be something
40:53
that would just be everywhere you know you'd have to be eating horrible food all the time
40:58
yeah it's like that like in zombieland when woody harrelson is obsessed with twinkies i was like yeah those would
41:04
probably still be there those things don't go bad they're barely food
41:10
i assume they're made out of plastic so yeah he puts a few more puts a few more sodas in a bag that he just finds
41:18
i do actually like that the vending machine is torn open from the bottom like it's curled upwards so someone
41:24
already raided the vending machine at just some earlier date which i thought was a nice touch
41:29
after a while everyone's just like ah i don't need to just find a quarter you know or whatever
41:35
well i don't think it was a quarter but yeah what was it around the early 2000s like maybe a buck 25 for a cola
41:42
something like that yeah well this is the uk so they got a whole other system anyway
41:48
yeah whatever i mean you know also i'd just be doing that day one like the second then like you know
41:55
the second [ __ ] it really hits the fan it's like then machines are uh open seas i could just see you like
42:02
standing there in a crowd and you see like zombies start to break out and then you just turn and just like throw a rock
42:07
through a window oops all right i guess i better take this tv i'll see you guys later the yeah the
42:14
flimsy as possible justification finally now it's time finally friends
42:22
you've been waiting so long for this my whole life has been leading up to this
42:29
it's super quiet outside as well major london thoroughfares are empty and littered with trash and paper
42:36
it's super lonely yeah this whole bit is friendly my i mean it's like the
42:42
most iconic moment in the same or in the whole it's wonderful yeah yeah and as he walks the abandoned
42:49
streets this is when that god speedy black emperor song comes in it's just a real just dreary plunky guitar tune that
42:56
i just love because it starts real slow and mournful you know kind of mourning the death of the city i mean
43:02
that's not originally why it was written but you know in the context of this film that's what it's doing and then it just like slowly picks up
43:09
and just gets more and more anxious and it fits quite well because the longer you would be in an
43:14
abandoned city the more maddening it would become where you know every time you rounded a corner you assumed you
43:20
would find a person there's got to be somebody somewhere yeah right
43:25
just yeah it feels like it builds with that realization of oh hold shift there really is nobody
43:31
here yeah everyone really is dead and honestly i'm just a sucker for a
43:37
good soundtrack in a horror movie well any movie really oh although i will say this i i mean
43:44
obviously from our perspective we know they're dead it's interesting from his perspective
43:51
it's like he doesn't know that yes no clue where people are and they're just
43:56
all gone yeah he doesn't even see any bodies until later on
44:01
as a non-british person the utter desolation around cilia murphy did not sink in for me fully until he crossed
44:08
the tames towards the parliament and there's big ben standing right there right there in the middle of the quiet
44:16
i was like i've seen that before and it's honestly chilling he wanders
44:22
past a double-decker bus that's just laying on its side well which i thought was a nice touch
44:30
there are some nice uh implied carnage there yeah i guess someone took a real sharp
44:35
turn on that double decker to get it to fall over you know yeah
44:41
there are some really exceptional distant shots of murphy just wandering around under immense looking buildings
44:47
yes definitely well i don't know if they're actually immense but they feel immense maybe just because of the emptiness of the film
44:56
i would like to point out that uh this movie does have some pretty excellent camera work oh yeah actually i'd say that's one of
45:04
the big selling points now these really strange combinations of very still shots often distant shots to establish
45:11
everything and then there'll be a sudden succession of really quick motion shots when something's approaching quickly and
45:18
it won't even have sound so it's like really unsettling yeah i've never really seen anyone else
45:23
do it quite like that before i think it's a really great style i i kind of wish it was used more often
45:28
yeah i don't know it's weird because like i even feel like 28 weeks later is a little bit weaker in that regard in
45:35
some ways oh yeah i don't i honestly don't like that movie uh yeah i don't like the sequel too much
45:45
murphy picks up some paper money that's just sitting on some stairs i mean hey it's just laying there
45:51
yeah i mean uh it wasn't like free money i also feel like
45:57
these scenarios always treat money like it's completely worthless but like there's there's probably some people who
46:03
would still like give you something for it if nothing else you could burn it you could use it as kindling sure
46:11
he finds a newspaper that says evacuation in all caps i actually stopped the shot so i could
46:17
read all of what the newspaper says i have it written down
46:22
i'm going to read it to you right now all right it says mass exodus of british
46:28
people causes global chaos and then there's just a series of lines with ellipses after each one
46:34
so uh it says uh blair declares state of emergency i guess that would be uh tony blair who
46:40
was in charge at the time military ordered shoot to kill
46:46
government checkpoints overrun u.n to build giant refugee camps
46:53
chaos at all london airports and government call for calm
47:00
excellent yeah but they're all these disconnected lines i guess it's the idea is that because it's like a movie newspaper they
47:07
just assume that you'll maybe you'll see one or two of those before it's too late and you're just like oh that's saying some serious stuff
47:13
yeah they don't expect me to like it has it maybe it's a quick shot
47:19
yeah out at piccadilly circus a big wall has been erected around the shaftsbury
47:26
memorial fountain i only know it's called that because i looked it up
47:32
yeah that wasn't i wasn't quite sure where you're going with that until you uh
47:38
until you mentioned it well in piccadilly circus or i mean sometimes in america we call it piccadilly square or
47:44
maybe the square is in the circus i don't know whatever anyway it's it's famous and the and the fountain in the
47:49
middle is a very famous fountain just because it's there and so sure
47:55
the director is this is he's using this as a shorthand to show that some serious stuff happened that all these
48:01
major british things have been co-opted to to show a horrible apocalypse
48:09
so the wall is just covered in notes and papers
48:15
yeah i uh i wanted to go back and look at some of that
48:21
but i didn't get around to it today i was a little i was a little too busy
48:27
i feel a little bad i mean well not bad i feel mad at myself because i did stop
48:33
i wrote some of it down and there's a lot so i i did some of the easier ones
48:40
uh so yeah there's a few notes uh one of them there's a picture of a man with like a
48:46
red circle around his face and then it points to a note and the note says have you seen this man he is five feet
48:53
seven inches tall aged 26 called philip mcdough
48:58
he lives in bruton or brewton or i don't know how you say it probably breton
49:04
but has not been seen for a few days now we are desperate to hear from him if you see him and then you know kind of
49:11
gets cut off i like the other one i i found where
49:16
it's more just directions another one reads please go to simon
49:22
faith is going to meet us there you do the same simon says he's got a plan
49:28
donna xxx take care
49:35
and there was one about a missing boy i didn't write it down but you know there was a boy that was missing
49:41
yeah yeah did you write any of it down or just you just notice it no no i
49:49
i i'd like to do more like more stuff like that i had a busy baby
49:54
that's it's fine i mean it just establishes that some bad stuff happened it has no real bearing on
50:00
the story i just thought it was neat yeah i like it when movie uh has details like
50:07
that shows they care so murphy wanders into a church
50:14
and the wooden cross just looms over him in the shot as he opens the front door
50:20
oh hey you know what lacrosse looming over uh silly and murphy
50:27
it's very uh zack snyder thing to do yeah
50:33
it was either that or superman extending his arms out like jesus
50:38
oh man is he is next time for such a hack
50:46
maybe that should be the the the tagline for this podcast it's just zack snyder
50:53
it's like it's it's like that's like that stuff is such a a dumb guy a way of being like eh see
51:01
how deep this is themes well again i don't want to poop
51:09
but yeah generally it's not great okay i'm sorry i have to i have to
51:14
deviate really quick okay did you see the picture they released of um
51:21
the joker in the snyder cut uh no the like promotional one okay it's great
51:28
because this is going to sound like a joke you can look this up i'm gonna
51:34
bring it up right now all right
51:39
okay he has a crown of thorns and his hands
51:48
yes he's doing the he's doing a jesus pose superman's jesus no joker is jesus we're
51:55
like it's all jesus
52:01
i think i laughed so hard when i saw that picture it was
52:06
just like it's embarrassing it's been bloody disgusting for some reason even though that's more of a horror sight justice
52:13
league's jared leto's joker wearing a crown of thorns a new shot from the snyder [ __ ]
52:22
oh god yeah he just got his hands out oh that's horrible
52:28
well that is bloody disgusting so yeah that's true uh but it's
52:35
it's kind of brilliant and not like because it's like smart
52:41
but just like the audacity of that ma'am
52:47
yeah okay so so back to the movie
52:53
i'm sorry i'm sorry until the next tangent on zack snyder
53:00
we'll figure something out yeah murphy wanders into a church the cross just looms over him menacingly as he
53:06
walks in as he gets to the stairs he sees some gigantic graffiti on the wall that just
53:13
says the the end is extremely well effing high i'm trying not to the curse
53:18
on your unnecessarily but anyway yeah
53:24
out in the pews there's just hundreds of corpses sitting or laying
53:30
it actually seems appropriate to me i i had heard somewhere that there's like places where people will congregate when
53:35
they're going to die and it's often bathrooms and churches
53:42
okay well yeah churches if it's a public well-known event bathrooms if it's uh unexpected personal injury you know like
53:49
you've cut yourself open you're trying to help cover it up and just die in your bathroom
53:55
i'm sure i feel like i just go to a burner store
54:00
that's their problem now or you could be like that kid from children of the corn where you're already fatally stabbed so
54:06
then you just go walk in the road so someone can run you over
54:13
yeah just you know try to be considerate shout out to my children of the corn fans what what
54:22
chances all right yes statement speaking of embarrassing
54:29
so yeah murphy's i am not to be clear i am not a corn head which
54:35
is what according to all children of the corn yeah children carn fans all call themselves that no it's true look it up
54:41
nope you call it you call them we who walk behind the rose
54:49
let's just let's just keep going all right
54:56
so yeah murphy's out standing in front of some pews he just calls out hello just sort of casually and a bunch of people stand
55:03
up and just look at him like with crazy slack-jawed faces like
55:09
which is honestly like super surprising and frightening because they don't say anything and they don't make any noise they just get up like instantly just
55:15
like what they you know like all at the same time yeah
55:22
and he doesn't really react to that i think he's he's up higher than them at first so he just sort of leaves
55:28
if and he hears someone stumbling through some doors and just from out of the depths of the
55:34
church comes this disheveled priest his motions are jerky and erratic
55:40
and he makes harsh little clearing the throat kinds of noises which i guess will come to be known as the rage zombie
55:46
noises murphy backs up as the preacher
55:52
approaches but when he doesn't respond murphy just smacks him with a bag full of pop cans
55:58
you know if someone ran at me i feel like that'd probably be my uh instinct too
56:05
you have to know if someone's a zombie or not to uh hit him if they're coming at you yeah he does apologize so at least he's
56:12
polite about it i'm sorry
56:19
i will what oh yeah go ahead yeah i was going to say
56:25
i feel really conflicted about the behavior of the zombies in this movie because
56:32
how so there's a lot of like twitchy stuff yeah but they don't they don't really behave
56:39
like like i i feel like
56:44
given that it's a rage virus they should behave like just really pissed off people
56:50
driven like insane and like maybe even like inarticulately you know enraged but they're all they're
56:57
they're all very twitchy yeah which i i just i don't get that well i mean this is probably a good time
57:02
to just describe what i think the rage virus is or at least what its symptoms are
57:08
okay so uh i listed a few things that i noticed that they have they have conjunctivitis because you see
57:14
they have really bloody eyes which just makes them look cool i don't
57:19
know if it really helps them i mean it seems like it would hurt them because it would make it harder to see
57:25
yeah and they're very bitey and aggressive which is kind of like rabies
57:30
except that rabies takes months or weeks or months it takes a very long time uh to incubate in a human body
57:39
whereas this happens to rage victims in something like 10 seconds
57:45
or under half a minute yeah so yeah so it's so there's conjunctivitis
57:51
uh rabies and i think encephalitis that's the uh like an infection of the
57:58
brain i mean there's things like meningitis that's the cerebral cerebral spinal fluid i have
58:05
trouble saying that and that just puts pressure on the brain and when you have that it just makes you deficient because it's squishing your
58:11
brain you know wherever it is and usually people just have a horrible headache and they die
58:17
encephalitis though that actually is an infection of the brain and there's not as many cases of that or
58:25
things that do that but when they do it at least makes it possible that they could be eating away at parts of your
58:31
brain that would make you change your behavior in a lot of different ways
58:37
you know like the uh like the prions they're not a virus
58:42
i think they're just like a malformed protein or something but you know the uh the mad cow disease it makes your brain
58:49
swiss cheese over decades by just telling your brain to remake
58:55
itself in the wrong way yeah i like it i mean it's like cancer
59:00
but i made the mistake the opposite of cancer what was that yeah i made the mistake of
59:07
uh reading up on uh prions a while back and it's like that's
59:12
you never want to know about like another completely like invisible thing that's like a
59:20
process that's normal in your body but if it ever messes up ever
59:25
it's probably gonna kill you yeah it'll slowly ruin you and you won't even know what's happening
59:32
yeah so yeah so i
59:38
i've got it to three now so conjunctivitis rabies encephalo encephalitis i mean it's probably all
59:44
three or at least you know symptoms of some things like that but they also have uh projectile blood vomit as we
59:50
mentioned earlier i happen to believe that that's bleeding ulcers
59:55
or maybe something in the digestive tract so that there's just blood in their system that they can just
1:00:01
regurgitate if they need to so all of those things
1:00:09
but whatever it is it's not affecting their coordination so it might just be targeting specific parts of their brain
1:00:15
maybe that have to do with higher functions but not with balance and things like that
1:00:21
because it seems like they would just stumble around and not be able to walk if those parts of the
1:00:27
brain were ruined i mean they're pretty nimble you know like the you know they're mindless but like they
1:00:33
can really just run you down and tear you to bits pretty pretty easily yeah i mean i hate to say it but i don't
1:00:40
think i could outrun a rage zombie i found an insider article
1:00:46
from some i don't know who they were some virologist ladies and they were raiding
1:00:52
all of the zombie viruses on a 1 to 10 scale
1:00:59
they listed 10 movies and actually the 28 days later rage
1:01:05
zombies got a 6 out of 10 which ended up being their highest score so they thought that it was the most
1:01:11
plausible of all of them and it's still pretty ridiculous
1:01:16
yeah i mean a zombie virus in general is pretty ridiculous
1:01:22
you you you shut your mouth well okay i will say this
1:01:29
it is nice that i mean as far as i can tell
1:01:34
the rape zombies are still alive uh i think so yeah i think they are yeah
1:01:42
yeah because i mean they you know spoilers they can uh starve yeah yeah
1:01:49
so like that automatically makes it so much more plausible than like oh yeah
1:01:54
they just like die and then come back yeah yeah
1:02:00
i mean that's what a lot of the complaints from the virologist ladies were it was more or less than like well okay even if you were able to keep the
1:02:07
medulla oblongata working you know that's just breathing and heart function
1:02:12
but it doesn't work for things like eyesight or walking and as soon as you die yeah all the
1:02:17
bacteria that just naturally lives in your body starts to eat you because you're a food source so i mean you would
1:02:24
have to regenerate like not just reawaken you know
1:02:29
sure but i don't know i feel like that's a little overthinking it but
1:02:34
yeah but well of course but uh that'd be a good one
1:02:40
because like zombies are it's always kind of presumed but they're fairly easy to kill but yeah it'd be so much worse if they would
1:02:47
regenerate like wolverine zombies
1:02:53
in a way that would make well i was gonna say more sense no that would make less sense but in a different way
1:02:59
yeah i mean i think that might be interesting though just like
1:03:04
yeah what what if uh yeah zombie problem but also uh zombies
1:03:09
were super tough to kill yeah so
1:03:15
so murphy smacks the priest with pop cans in the bag and after the priest falls over he just
1:03:21
keeps crawling after him as if nothing had happened you know as if it means nothing to him that he was knocked over
1:03:28
yeah so murphy runs out of the building about a half dozen people scurry out after him
1:03:34
the east hastings song picks up again like uh to some of the more tense parts at the end
1:03:40
of the song and uh two masked people just sort of pop out
1:03:45
i don't know if they're really introduced visually they're just suddenly there
1:03:50
yeah it's a little abrupt so murphy's running along and then there
1:03:56
are these two masked people who are just hurling molotov cocktails willy-nilly just all over the place
1:04:05
they managed to utterly inflame a few of the pursuers and then they
1:04:10
i'm not sure what it is they do i think they jury rig a gas tank or something because they effectively set off a bomb
1:04:16
at a gas station oh i'm sorry this is britain a petrol station
1:04:22
don't don't encourage them
1:04:28
you and your strange words no they're so anyway silly words i'm not
1:04:33
gonna add i'm not gonna play their game yeah they blow up the gas station they
1:04:40
float the gas station and totally emulate the rest it's a really well shot explosion from
1:04:46
multiple angles and distances including like super far away
1:04:52
i just wanted to point out i mean i'm not really an action movie guy or at least not in this podcast but
1:04:59
it's a really great action shot of an explosion it's you know it really just lays it out
1:05:04
like here's every angle of how it blew up yeah
1:05:11
i know i uh the uh the explosion effects are
1:05:16
very good so murphy and the two masked people hide
1:05:22
in a convenience store of some kind behind a riot shield or whatever you call those metal pull
1:05:27
down things that are in front of storefronts i think that's just what they call them
1:05:34
the man in the gas mask tells a bad joke something about a giraffe in a bar that
1:05:40
falls over the man owns a giraffe and then he's about to leave and then he says you can't leave that lying there and the man
1:05:47
says it's not a lion it's a giraffe yeah i kind of like that bit
1:05:53
uh i know i mean it's a bad joke but i feel like that would be a good way to
1:05:58
kind of like get someone to like snap out of it you know yeah in a way
1:06:04
you'd want bad dad jokes to just sort of ground people and be like yeah everything's back to normal again
1:06:10
yeah or at least just like okay focus on on the conversation what we're
1:06:16
saying or maybe just a verification he's not a rage zombie well yeah
1:06:21
he seems like pretty like understandably pretty out
1:06:27
naomi harris is the other masked vigilante she asks him who he is he says he's a bike courier named jim
1:06:34
he was in a bad accident sideswiped by a truck and only just spoke up
1:06:39
the other two introduced themselves as mark and selena respectively
1:06:45
mark has like one of the greatest understatement lines in maybe cinematic history when he says
1:06:51
well i'm afraid i've got some bad news
1:06:56
i mean how do you even break that to someone yeah there's no way and there's no way i
1:07:01
like what are you going to say she's like well i mean i don't know how to begin this but everyone's dead
1:07:07
selena describes the onset of the rage virus taking over everything there's infections that were reported in
1:07:14
paris new york just before tv and radio stopped working jim asks if there's a government or what
1:07:21
the government's doing and you know and they're just like there's no government he's like how can there not be a government
1:07:26
there's always a government they're in a bunker or a plane
1:07:33
i feel like that would be me that would be me rationalizing things i'm just like there's got to be some they had to have had a secret plan
1:07:41
i i mean yeah i feel you know like despite uh you know some mishandling of pandemics
1:07:48
uh in the recent events uh uh yeah yeah maybe they were there
1:07:53
like there would be a plan like that like you'd hope well i would hope that prime minister
1:07:59
tony blair would have gotten on an airplane or a helicopter or something and just be like a deposed
1:08:04
king you know even if his country's gone he could just go be sad in another country yeah i don't know why that would
1:08:11
be comforting it would make no difference but i guess in a way it sort of would i don't know
1:08:16
maybe just because he's a representative of the people or uh something like that i mean there are there are presumably still people from
1:08:24
that country alive so i feel like yeah there's a small handful of i guess
1:08:31
because here they are yeah so there's no electricity and uh jim is the first uninfected person that either
1:08:38
selena or mark have seen in six days i kind of want to know who the last person was you know like yeah they're
1:08:44
going somewhere and then someone is just like hey help me out you just get killed by a zombie
1:08:54
yeah damn it there's not much to suggest this but i did get the impression that they were a
1:09:00
part of a larger group they have a team feel to them even though there's just two of them it seems
1:09:05
like they had a skill set that they were all good at and most of them just died i think
1:09:10
that's it they look almost like a like a cat burglar group where like each one has the special skill
1:09:18
apparently mark does smash and grab and explosions multiple cocktails
1:09:23
and selena is uh like a pharmacist well she said later in the film she says she qualified as a chemist i don't know
1:09:29
what that means i guess she's allowed to just play with stuff okay
1:09:34
peter i'm really sorry so that actually that's kind of an
1:09:39
interesting thought the idea of you know what if they were cat bird players because like
1:09:45
doing like a heist in a zombie apocalypse seems really interesting somebody should maybe make a movie about
1:09:52
that oh wait zack snyder's making a movie about that oh my god why
1:10:01
yes why would you steal when everything's over already
1:10:06
no yeah no that plot makes no sense to me but whatever well i guess by the time they
1:10:12
get to the land of the dead movies there's kind of a need for money and stuff
1:10:17
although it didn't really make a lot of sense to me i just felt like money is only as good as people are willing to honor it i mean whatever it's
1:10:24
a garbage concept i will however still be watching that movie all right then so
1:10:31
jim does the first thing that we would all do he wants to go see his family and they're just like no they're going to be
1:10:37
dead and then we're all going to die and he's just sort of like no i insist
1:10:44
we're gonna go and i don't know i guess you sort of have to especially if you know that he
1:10:49
hasn't been through any of this he's he's fresh so he in a way they they know that he
1:10:55
has to go through this process of acknowledging what happened and then grieving for it
1:11:02
yeah so i mean jim just says all right fine i'll just go by myself and selena's like no
1:11:07
nobody ever comes back and so they go together so isn't that nice
1:11:14
oh yeah mark lays down two lessons though never go anywhere alone unless
1:11:20
you have no choice only travel during the day unless you have no choice ah a role that uh mark
1:11:26
does later on break yeah they break both of those rules
1:11:31
uh maybe but i know yeah they like there we'll we'll get to it when we get
1:11:36
to yeah it's coming up so they went out the night at the place they currently are and in the
1:11:43
morning they go see jim's dead parents
1:11:48
there's no nice way to put it well actually no maybe there are but i chose not to as they approach his house
1:11:55
softly devastatingly they start to play henry francis lights christian him abide
1:12:01
with me just just softly playing a nice little
1:12:06
death hymn in the background while jim wanders around his house trying to find his parents
1:12:12
i actually wrote down part of the lyrics because it sounded sad abide with me fast falls the event tide
1:12:20
the darkness deepens lord with me abide when other helpers fail and comforts
1:12:26
flee help of the helpless oh abide with me
1:12:36
jim makes it up to his parents bedroom he finds them laying together in bed long dead and smelling very bad
1:12:43
it looks like they took a bunch of pills yeah which i mean
1:12:49
maybe not the worst way to uh to go in a an apocalypse like this
1:12:54
yeah although as if to make matters worse crumpled in their hands is a picture of
1:13:00
him as a child and on the back is a note and i wrote it down
1:13:06
jim with endless love we leave you sleeping or we left you sleeping
1:13:12
now we're sleeping with you don't wake up
1:13:18
[Laughter] it's like
1:13:23
okay here's the thing i get i get having that thought why
1:13:29
why write that down except for the purpose of emotionally devastating him
1:13:34
should he wake up yeah just to be sure that you know it was i was gonna say it's his fault but not
1:13:40
really yeah no but it's just like who is that for
1:13:46
i can't i mean oh no yeah i understand on the emotional
1:13:52
level it's just like jesus you'd better hope he doesn't see that
1:13:58
yeah i mean i forget which one says it mark or or selena's just says well i mean yeah at least they died peacefully
1:14:05
it's better than my parents mark tells the dreadful story of being
1:14:11
trapped in a crowded airport when the rage virus began to sweep through like wildfire and he only got away by
1:14:18
climbing away from his parents over and on top of people onto a kiosk
1:14:23
and then he saw his father's infected face in the crowd good times
1:14:31
you know the movie really just like lays it on heavy early on i guess it needs to just to be like this is serious the
1:14:36
world's ended i guess in light of it taking so long for him to mourn his parents they just
1:14:42
decide to stay in jim's house for the night i have to say it's just
1:14:47
a horrible horrible mistake there's no defenses at all
1:14:53
the windows are just open i mean they don't even close the blinds i don't think no well at least they chose to
1:14:58
sleep in the same room however jim wakes up like an idiot and wanders off by himself he lights a
1:15:05
candle and goes and looks at household knickknacks you know just remembering good times he remembers himself into a
1:15:11
scene with his parents as their unloading groceries that's right his dad says something about drinking
1:15:17
orange juice and then out loud you know jim says oh it's empty
1:15:22
there was something weird about that it does sort of trigger that odd familiarity where you remember a random
1:15:27
thing you said to like a family member but anyway the light seems to attract attention and then two infected people
1:15:34
burst through the windows and tackle jim it's almost like their swat team one of them crashes through the skylight and
1:15:40
then the other comes in just through like i think it's the kitchen window what was he doing up there i don't know
1:15:46
just wandering around on the roof i guess although later jim says that the man is
1:15:52
a neighbor from four doors down so i guess he died on the roof maybe he was trying
1:15:57
to protect himself or something and just didn't work out i guess we'll never know so
1:16:02
jim sort of feebly tries to keep them off of him and then mark and selena run in and just bash and cut them down
1:16:09
and jim just really lets the blood rub around in his face i mean i know he's new to all this but
1:16:15
he's just kind of like like just like rubbing his hands on his face and stuff it's like you're trying to get infected
1:16:23
i mean this stuff is super duper contagious man you don't don't risk it
1:16:29
selena demands to know if he was bitten understandable jim says no good that's the right answer
1:16:37
yeah mark however while he's cleaning himself off he reveals a big ugly cut on his arm and he's trying to wipe it clean
1:16:43
but when he looks up he has that sort of apologetic look on his face like no no wait wait and selena just straight up
1:16:49
murders him with a machete just cutting right through his arm and just just cutting them down
1:16:54
yeah that was pretty brutal yeah i forgot to write down the name of the actor who plays mark but he just
1:17:00
admits just a wonderfully horrible scream of agony when he dies oh god yeah
1:17:09
uh noah huntley good job mr huntley
1:17:17
he has been in such classics as japal lube dracula untold
1:17:27
jesus got these these all oh wait wait wait he was uh in event horizon
1:17:33
oh wait really as yeah as burning man slash edward couric
1:17:41
oh that guy you let me burn yeah
1:17:47
i got that movie memorized i was so confused by that i should have known that guy but no that guy is totally covered in burns
1:17:54
you can barely see his face in the movie well now you know it's that guy and now he's dead
1:18:00
now it's just selena the movie's a little worse for it you think so
1:18:06
a little bit yeah selena explains that there is a 10 to 20 second window to kill a newly infected
1:18:13
person before the rage virus overtakes them selena warns that if the same happens to
1:18:18
jim she'll murder him in a heartbeat i like that she's weirdly bitter about
1:18:25
optimism because as they're walking away she's just like mark had all these plans it's just a
1:18:32
waste of time well what's wrong with having a plan you know having a future
1:18:38
yeah it's it kind of takes me a while to like because i get really off the movie she
1:18:44
is just like just it's like it's okay to have a little bit of hope
1:18:50
well i don't think she's i don't think she doesn't have hope i think what it is is that she's
1:18:55
turned off the parts of her brain that'll make her grieve too much she just sort of
1:19:01
is just living day to day as much as she can you know like the way in alcohol yeah
1:19:07
okay odd comparison but all right
1:19:12
well i was just thinking you know just embracing the day but i mean also just circumstances will probably change so
1:19:18
much for her and we don't know what she went through it was probably a lot of real terrible stuff so i mean
1:19:26
i mean i'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt you know i'm not gonna hold it against her for being hard
1:19:31
and and cold after a lot of terrible stuff happen she just had to kill her friend just real quick
1:19:37
yeah no i will all right so as they're walking away i don't know
1:19:43
where they're walking to i guess they're just walking jim draws her attention to an apartment with blinking working
1:19:49
christmas lights and i was thinking how weird that is in a city that would be totally dark and
1:19:55
totally abandoned and then there's just one little apartment that's just blinking christmas lights
1:20:01
well also like thing is you don't want to be a pessimist but it's like
1:20:06
sure that could be a good thing but they could also be a bad thing it could be a trap yeah
1:20:13
because i mean i feel like i mean they're like they're basically two kinds of people who are trying to attract
1:20:20
other people during an apocalypse it's like people who will meet other people and
1:20:25
want to be helpful and uh cannibal maniacs yeah
1:20:31
who's slavery yeah people who like at best want to take your stuff
1:20:37
at worst have gone completely nuts well they don't seem to have anything
1:20:43
else to do so they just go to this apartment complex yeah the ground floor is just barricaded with
1:20:49
hundreds of shopping carts or as jim calls them shopping trolleys
1:20:55
yeah he does yeah we do well this is what they call it there you know
1:21:00
i'm not gonna hold it against them i think it's cute okay yeah yeah it's no that's the thing
1:21:07
it's all it's all cute it's all real cute it's cute to our ears it's not cute to
1:21:13
them i mean i don't even know which came first i mean maybe it's more original i think i guess it's a bunch of hobbit bs
1:21:24
okay so anyway they climb over the shopping trolleys to get inside and
1:21:30
about halfway up the long stair this is you remember hear you talking earlier about the sugar deficiency or whatever the sugar
1:21:36
overload i guess yeah this is where that happens where jim just gets a crushing headache but he
1:21:43
doesn't want to admit that he's getting kind of debilitated because you know he doesn't think that she cares
1:21:48
and she's like well why didn't you tell me sooner or later bag of pills and she says well you
1:21:56
have no fat on you and you've been eating nothing but sugar the only thing we can do about that is
1:22:01
give you painkillers and more sugar yeah at this point is she a former nurse i don't know if
1:22:08
she was or not she could have been although yeah i mean that that makes a certain amount
1:22:14
of sense so she offers him pepsi or lilt and uh he asks for tango
1:22:21
do you know what any of those things are well pepsi i guess yeah well yes
1:22:27
i mean i just assumed they were uh soft drink brands i've never heard ones before until yeah
1:22:34
yeah me either so i actually looked them up let's see lilt it's
1:22:40
i don't know even just saying that sounds weird to me so it's it's spelled l-i-l-t lilt as in like the lilt in a
1:22:46
song or a lil seeing song yeah it is a carbonated beverage from northern ireland
1:22:51
pineapple juice and grapefruit juice it was introduced in 1975
1:22:57
and is only sold in the uk ireland and the seashells i'm not sure if that would be good
1:23:03
it sounds like that could be okay yeah the other one is tango which seems more like uh fanta
1:23:09
it's uh i don't know well i know there's at least two flavors orange and orange and apple
1:23:16
i think there might be more but the big ones are orange and apple apparently the product is known for
1:23:21
really surreal advertisements most notably a commercial in which a man drinking orange tango is slapped in the
1:23:27
face by a man in an orange suit the commercial led to numerous cases of uk
1:23:32
school children tangoing children who had drunk tango by slapping them in the face
1:23:39
yes that's so good
1:23:46
oh man i got like however like to be clear it's not it's not the
1:23:52
violence against children it's just like that becoming a thing of like slapping people because of commercial
1:23:59
that's very funny hey i saw this on a commercial slap
1:24:05
okay right you know that reminds me of that reminds me of that whole noid thing
1:24:10
was it like richard noid yeah don't be annoyed by the noid yeah
1:24:16
i don't remember exactly how that goes but yeah was that the thing about it squishing the pizza because you don't
1:24:22
have the little chair in the middle is that is that what the noise yeah
1:24:27
i don't think it was quite a bit sensical so maybe he just encapsulated annoyance
1:24:34
in general yeah i'm assuming yeah so yeah they're about halfway up
1:24:40
jim drinks a soda he doesn't get slapped in the face but they do hear zombies coming up from
1:24:47
below and they start climbing over the uh the shopping trolleys
1:24:52
they both have to run up the stairs and i actually kind of give selena credit for just not caring she just runs up and
1:25:00
jim is still too debilitated to really keep up with her and so he's just howling after her he said please don't
1:25:05
leave me i mean he's only a little behind but
1:25:11
he's really flipping out yeah they managed to rush to the very top of the stair and run into an
1:25:17
imposing man in a full ski mask and black riot gear holding out a riot shield
1:25:23
uh yeah pretty cool smurfs man in the movie yeah he directs them into his apartment
1:25:29
i don't remember what the number is but anyway yeah he directs them to his apartment and then he just stays to
1:25:35
fight the oncoming infected he's just bashing him with a shield it's pretty cool
1:25:40
yeah they dash over to the door of his apartment luckily it's got one of those metal things on the outside of the door
1:25:46
i guess to keep ruffians out it'll at least afford some protection if they got through all of his defenses
1:25:53
through that great his daughter i guess she is he opens the door and just like well
1:25:58
where's dad you're like let us in he's like not without dad
1:26:04
i guess they want to play up the tension for the scene i suppose there is a possibility that he could be overcome by
1:26:09
the zombies and that would be the end of things but i mean it's not really a very high stakes moment he just kind of knocks down the zombie
1:26:15
and it it falls through the middle of the stairwell it just plummets and it looks
1:26:21
great yeah of the shot yeah i love a good dummy shot and it is
1:26:26
a good dummy it's not a bad dummy just careening around knocking into stuff as it goes down
1:26:34
so he gives his permission after he's done beating up the zombies he's like all right you can let him in
1:26:40
it's fine it's weird because he keeps his mask on for just slightly too long and they do this on purpose just to play with your
1:26:45
expectations you know you're like well who is this guy you see like some weird sado masochistic
1:26:51
crazy guy and he takes off his mask and it's just gentle genteel mad-eye moody you know
1:26:59
yeah right then i'm frank he's such a gracious host
1:27:05
he's super nice immediately he plays as a very nice dad so yeah he introduces himself as frank
1:27:12
and his daughter is is hannah and he's just so jazzed to see living
1:27:17
people i have to admit when i first saw this movie my first impression was like there's no way
1:27:22
he's like actually nice right he's gotta have something going on yeah he's gonna be a trick no
1:27:28
no no he's just a nice guy it's great well i think in a way he kept things
1:27:34
nice for him and his daughter in a very controlled way he was able to keep out the world as it was ending
1:27:41
so he's probably as close to jim without being jim as you could be i think he
1:27:46
might be i mean he's still affected by the apocalypse but maybe not as much because he has what he needs
1:27:56
so as celebration frank whips out the uh creme de menthe which looks horrible
1:28:03
yeah i i looked that up and it did not seem like something i'd be drinking i think
1:28:09
it's one of those things you're supposed to add to something else yeah
1:28:14
sweet and mint flavor but they uh you know but they politely drink it
1:28:20
they finally show where the electricity comes from frank's just been keeping the lights on with a car battery
1:28:26
every day of the rage apocalypse is christmas time at frank's place
1:28:32
i noticed that frosty the snowman is playing on infinite loop whenever they have that car battery plugged in
1:28:42
i hope it can alternate to other songs i was just thinking how annoying that would be i haven't always playing
1:28:48
i assume that it's only playing that one song just forever and ever
1:28:54
yeah well i wanted to disable it but it was connected to the lights so i had to keep it on
1:29:01
so that night jim rips up his face trying to shave without water frank advises him to use a bucket as a
1:29:08
chamber pot yeah should the need to rise it's nice i guess i mean i don't know
1:29:14
it's one of those things you don't you really need to discuss it but i guess it's trying to point out how lame his
1:29:20
existence is right now that he has to just pour his stuff over the side and just wait for rain
1:29:27
yeah which is the next thing they lead them up to the roof and there's just buckets everywhere
1:29:33
buckets and containers just hundreds of like brightly colored pieces of plastic
1:29:39
i thought that show was great when they uh established all that yeah the overhead
1:29:46
frank says that he tried to collect condensation with a big tarp but couldn't make it work i once had to
1:29:52
watch a semi-educational series in school called the voyage of the mimi
1:29:57
in it they dig a pit fill it with seawater and place a bucket in the middle and then place a they drape a plastic
1:30:04
tarp with a rock in the center so that the condensation will drip down
1:30:09
into it into the bucket in the middle i've heard of people trying to make it
1:30:15
work when they're stranded on islands i don't know that it's ever worked i mean it must have
1:30:20
worked for somebody but it just seems like even if it does work you've done all this effort and what you
1:30:26
get is maybe half a cup of warm gross water i suppose it's better than
1:30:31
sea water i mean you're actually able to drink it but you wouldn't be able to live off of that it might just
1:30:37
maybe well maybe it'll help keep you just barely alive i think that's kind of what they're going for
1:30:43
yeah i voluntarily watched one of those old military uh
1:30:49
educate the troops videos for uh what to do if you uh survive getting down in the desert and
1:30:56
you have to uh stick it out for a few days and they would uh i i thought it was
1:31:03
interesting because what they would do is uh they just collect dew off of
1:31:08
the uh wings of the flame huh yeah
1:31:14
it's like those moisture evaporators in star wars exactly
1:31:20
frank admits to jim that they just can't stay in place much longer without fresh provisions
1:31:27
but as sort of an offering i guess you could say he uh he gives some information to them by winding up a
1:31:32
hand-powered radio and tapping into a signal he found that's been playing on repeat and lo and behold it's christopher
1:31:39
eccleston's voice and he promises an answer to infection claims to be soldiers
1:31:46
and gives coordinates for any survivors to follow hooray i guess yeah
1:31:53
but you know honestly it seems even more like a trap than following christmas lights yeah yeah
1:32:00
go to this place you won't know where we are but we will know where you are
1:32:05
yeah i feel like yeah it's just like the nature of a recording makes it untrustworthy because you can't
1:32:11
talk to them you just have to kind of go there
1:32:17
well then again i don't suppose they assume that people are going to have a ham radio and be able to send signals
1:32:22
back and forth or whatever true yeah but regardless frank has it plotted on a
1:32:28
map he says it'll take two or three days journey to get there
1:32:34
frank admits he can't risk the trip by himself you know he might get hurt and then it would only just be his underage
1:32:40
daughter hannah by herself and says he'll need their help
1:32:45
it seems like selena's gonna say no and then hannah just says like no but we we all need each other like she kind of
1:32:51
just says something sweet but it doesn't really change the situation but they just sort of go
1:32:57
with it they're just like all right fine yeah i will actually you know i will say
1:33:03
i made it a note but i really appreciate but the young daughter character is
1:33:10
level-headed like enough to be like hey you know here you're just like a
1:33:16
a reason for us to stick together like let's uh you know like let's see use reds about it
1:33:22
yeah not just like a shrieking crying mess who drags the
1:33:27
whole movie down which like a lot of other horror films yes
1:33:34
so they have a road trip i want a road trip
1:33:40
frank has a pretty robust looking taxi and it's loaded up with goods
1:33:46
with it the four of them drive off towards the coordinates somewhere in manchester i don't know if they're super
1:33:51
clear about where just somewhere on the outskirts a very bubbly rendition of ave maria
1:33:58
starts playing as they drive through the rubble of civilization
1:34:08
i love that like they don't make the best decision but it's it works out i mean that's a minor spoiler but i mean they get to an
1:34:15
underground tunnel it is the worst decision you could possibly make
1:34:21
and frank is just like it's the fastest way we should just go and jim's just like no we should take
1:34:28
the less fast way and go somewhere where we won't get trapped and killed i felt
1:34:35
for jim so much during the scene because i know that would be me just pointing out
1:34:42
holy [ __ ] this is a really dumb idea and just like despair this is the worst
1:34:49
idea the despair of like watching someone make what you know is a very
1:34:54
dumb decision yeah yeah there's no lights in there i'm sure no harm will come to us
1:35:01
it's like what about your situation would ever make you think that
1:35:08
just take a jaunty trip right down the middle of a horrible plague tunnel yeah obvious it like it makes him feel
1:35:16
like a kind of naive guy just thinking that he's like yeah
1:35:22
i also kind of wonder how much like he's been exposed to the apocalypse too
1:35:28
yeah i don't know i mean you know as i was saying before i think he kind of shut himself away but i'm sure
1:35:35
he had some access he probably listened to news reports until they stopped
1:35:41
so frank just drives into the darkness obstructions start to get in their way
1:35:46
and frank just plows over them like up and over like ramps of garbage
1:35:51
like he's in a monster truck or something and miraculously it works i can't believe it works
1:35:58
i mean it's like cars are designed to just drive over other cars or piles of garbage and that kind of stuff
1:36:05
but you know regardless they all laugh and have a good time in the car however right at the end of it it's only after
1:36:12
they get over all the garbage piles and the cars that the front the right front wheel
1:36:17
goes flat yeah and they're still in the tunnel so now they're stuck in the tunnel good job
1:36:26
the group gets out and stands guard as hannah slides under the taxi to get the car jack in
1:36:32
which again that's nice that they gave her something to do and she wasn't weird about it she's like yeah this is what i do
1:36:38
i'm glad that you know the director boyle and i guess the writer they made pains to make none of the characters
1:36:45
annoying yeah there's a weird sound they hear
1:36:51
something approaching and they you think at first it's infected but no it's not it's a giant wave of rats
1:37:00
which yeah which is pretty amazing yeah also a terrifying concept because like what
1:37:05
if can animal wait i i don't remember the sequel did animals get the rage virus i
1:37:11
mean obviously there's the like the chimpanzees at the beginning you don't really see chips do
1:37:17
well i'm just saying like not sure about
1:37:24
i know well later on they see some horses and they think they're not infected although it would have been
1:37:29
funny if they were and they just didn't see them yeah because getting ridden down by rage
1:37:35
horses would have been pretty amazing no please
1:37:41
oh man i don't know why but that thought is really funny to me just like solving the only thing that
1:37:46
makes me feel like they're not rage rats is just the fact that they are fleeing infected so i mean they're oh no no yeah
1:37:53
i don't think they're infected i was just like like the idea that they could be would make that so much worse
1:38:00
it would it would ruin the world even more it would be even more ruined
1:38:06
the group lifts up the car so hannah can replace the pop tire oh but before that yeah the rats flood
1:38:12
in and she's still under the car and then they just like climb all over here and she freaks out which is pretty great
1:38:19
yeah but then they pull her out they get the car up just by pushing on
1:38:26
it and then she replaces the tire just in the nick of time they close the doors just as the infected are coming up
1:38:32
on them yeah and then like an idiot jim leans out one of the back windows and flips them off
1:38:39
as they're driving away and i was just thinking like you know if frank had driven too close to a wall or something
1:38:44
that would have been the end of jim yeah you really can't get cocky during a
1:38:50
zombie apocalypse yeah so to celebrate once they're finally out
1:38:58
they go raid a grocery store called budgens i love the same
1:39:04
yeah and another great song kicks in it's a fun little montage of them just picking over stuff
1:39:10
you can tell that they're trying very hard to not get sugary stuff just because that's all they've been eating
1:39:15
yeah so they're trying to get fruit and whatever there's a great part where frank goes over to the the vegetables
1:39:21
and all of the apples are rotten except for the ones that were irradiated it radiated
1:39:28
frank loads up on some pricey boos that are in black boxes that then keeps out the fire keeps in
1:39:34
the warmth i thought that was funny yeah i mean well i mean yeah
1:39:39
yeah why not just take the good stuff so they all grab their stuff they have
1:39:45
three full carts to get back in the car frank just drops off his debit card because you know he'll never use it again yeah
1:39:52
they drive away there's just a shot of like a huge field of flowers
1:39:57
and it's all blurred in a way that makes it look like an impressionist painting i was trying to figure out why
1:40:03
they did it like that you know the director i i think it's because it's supposed to mark that that was just a
1:40:08
really beautiful moment and they're going to remember it that way you know like a painting yeah that seems like something you do if
1:40:15
you were good at making movies
1:40:20
yeah that's what i do if i was uh competent or something
1:40:25
listen i i've been watching so much trash lately i have to appreciate little things like that
1:40:32
oh no yeah no i mean this is such a classy zombie movie i mean well for one thing the director doesn't even call it
1:40:38
that he actually gets a little annoyed when people call it a zombie movie no it's not that you know it's about
1:40:44
infected people and in some ways i mean there's there's an argument to be made i mean it does
1:40:49
remind me of a few movies where people just lose their minds because of something you know like uh the crazies
1:40:56
yeah from the well either version there's a 60s version and i think there's like a 90s version yeah i've
1:41:02
seen the 90s version i have not seen the old one but i do like the uh there's a
1:41:08
there's a 1984 movie called impulse with meg tilly where people get infected by bad milk
1:41:16
that has like a chemical in it and it makes them lose all their inhibitions and so they start just like fighting and
1:41:22
having sex out in the streets it's pretty amazing actually sounds interesting so in a way it's it's
1:41:27
kind of it does feel almost like that sort of a movie i guess more of an outbreak film
1:41:34
or maybe as much of an outbreak film as it is a zombie movie
1:41:40
so they have to stop at a gas station i guess they're low on gas luckily there's a gas tank right nearby
1:41:47
that frank can easily uh siphon gas from using a rubber tube he gets quite a lot of gasoline in his
1:41:54
mouth i was just thinking how gross that would be you know we have to suck on it to get the the
1:42:00
flow going i don't think i'd be able to do that in like the smooth cool like movie way
1:42:07
where you uh just don't get a mouthful of gas i would probably
1:42:12
yeah i'd probably be that guy sputtering dog oh god i swallowed some
1:42:20
while he's pouring the gas jim arms himself with a bat and just stupidly investigates the inside of an
1:42:27
abandoned diner all by himself yeah how many times is he going to do that just didn't get what you know didn't you
1:42:34
learn the first time yeah this really doesn't work out dude yeah every time every single time
1:42:42
so inside he finds a bunch of dead families i don't know he says he's gonna go look for cheeseburgers but even if they were
1:42:48
in there i mean they feel like they're gonna be good they're not gonna be refrigerated i guess he's being sarcastic maybe he's just curious yeah
1:42:55
but he doesn't really have a reason to be there did i use something weird about that scene where i
1:43:01
i mean i guess it's so they can do the thing later on
1:43:06
because he bashes that kid
1:43:11
a kid leaps out yeah and he pins him to the ground and you know he's a little rage child with the bloody eyes and
1:43:18
everything yeah and so you know he's got to take him out with a bat it's horrible but he's got to do what he's got to do
1:43:23
yeah it's just one of those things where i feel like maybe that part of the script needed
1:43:29
another pass yeah i don't know it feels like a real human thing to me i i mean i i'm not
1:43:35
saying i like that he made a mistake is that i think he would make a mistake
1:43:41
i just think that because he's not well suited to this new reality that he can
1:43:46
still do careless things every now and then i guess yeah that makes sense and also just gives you
1:43:52
the opportunity to see some real just sad dead bodies you know there's like a lady with a dead baby and it's it's
1:43:59
really horrible yeah it just gives you that sense to like
1:44:04
there's that thing where you could investigate something but you probably shouldn't and sometimes you just have to
1:44:10
you have to be burned to know you're like yeah i really shouldn't have gone in there you know
1:44:16
this was a mistake so he comes back afterwards and uh
1:44:21
selena asks somebody finds he just denies seeing anything i i don't think he wants to talk about it
1:44:28
i mean how do you i'm sorry how do you bring that up without bringing the room down
1:44:33
yeah how many points is a little kid good word like what
1:44:40
how many points
1:44:47
so
1:44:52
that might be the only time when like i'll just leave like a real long pause just like just just let everyone just just feel that
1:45:00
just seep into their souls
1:45:06
so there's a lovely shot of wind turbines as the taxi wends its way down the empty motorway
1:45:13
another tranquil song starts up i don't know what this one is it's some kind of ethereal female vocal sounding stuff
1:45:19
it's nice yeah it's kind of just a road trip movie up until this point really all right well
1:45:24
that's what i was saying this is what i'm liking the movie the most is when it's just stuff like this
1:45:30
yeah it's really just kind of reflective i actually think it goes to a broader
1:45:35
theme of the movie that it's not really about the end of the world but actually about the the new beginning of the world
1:45:42
oh jesus is that too sappy or something i don't know no i mean
1:45:48
you know wrong i was just like in my in my head i was like making that like it's
1:45:53
not about the end world it's that the beginning
1:46:01
no like yeah you're not wrong it was just i'm sorry sorry
1:46:09
so yeah they go have a picnic at some medieval looking stone brick architectural ruins i think it's in
1:46:15
surrey in real life yeah and they just eat out under a tree it's nice
1:46:22
and this is the point when frank calls them over to look at some wild horses that are just running around yeah
1:46:28
i forget one of them asks like are they infected and frank's just like no i don't think so
1:46:33
but you know maybe they were they would have made a much different
1:46:38
and more grim movie if you know they just turned and ran at them yeah oh my god they're coming this way
1:46:48
uh maybe maybe we'll get that they have to go like hide in the taxi in 28 months
1:46:54
later one man very important yeah i heard that danny boyle is trying to make a third
1:46:59
movie i don't know if i want that because of how much i don't like the second film yeah i think it's probably just
1:47:07
i think that if they do that it's just going to be that typical like the first movie is good second movie isn't as good
1:47:13
third movie is uh yeah even worse more of a reprise of the
1:47:19
first movie yeah i thought maybe you you thought it would be a return oh no no i
1:47:25
i don't trust franchises to do that yeah i mean the second one has hawkeye in it
1:47:32
so i mean all hope is lost yeah oh god
1:47:38
jeremy runner no yeah it's bugging me out because i'm thinking probably i'm gonna have to
1:47:43
watch that hawkeye series when it comes out i want to do that
1:47:49
someone's got to do it yeah
1:47:54
so selena and jim walk around the ruins by themselves and have a talk
1:47:59
selena admits that she thinks she was wrong to be so cynical you know and that frank and hannah are
1:48:06
happy because they still have one another as a family and that maybe civilization is not so important is living a happy life with
1:48:13
people you love yeah i mean she said yeah she's right
1:48:20
that's not exactly what you said i feel like that's the gist of what she says i mean she's kind of a
1:48:25
do you say taciturn or attack a turn i don't know anyway
1:48:30
anyway
1:48:38
she's few with her words especially when she's expressing an emotion i think just because of how much crap she's had to go
1:48:43
through oh that's good all right yeah oh here
1:48:51
jesus christ sorry i guess an amazon order came in
1:48:58
the doorbell was rang all right well your way back to the movie
1:49:04
maybe that's all you need you know just to have friends and loved ones around you jim agrees
1:49:10
and says yeah that's the thought i was having too selena steals a kiss on his cheek and then apologizes
1:49:18
and then uh jim says she can keep it and i just wrote this movie is just the
1:49:24
bee's knees for me honestly
1:49:30
when the movie doesn't have zombies on screen it's so much better
1:49:37
it is almost two films i suppose in that sense yeah i don't know i feel like it gels pretty well but i could see why you
1:49:42
would why you would see it as not that i mean they are very different stories
1:49:47
yeah well also just like the movie when it takes that turn later on it that's when it really feels like two
1:49:54
different movies i don't want to spoil things but there are alternate endings that were worse so
1:50:00
i am aware of them but did not look them up or anything do you uh
1:50:06
did you watch them i did okay we'll get to that yeah yeah
1:50:11
in time oh hey i just had a random thought about i guess like the rage virus in general
1:50:19
it's a little weird i mean i understand why they don't do this but it's a little weird that rage zombies don't uh attack
1:50:26
each other yeah probably a smell i would assume
1:50:32
yeah that makes sense yeah i mean it's also it's like damn near impossible to do a movie where
1:50:39
like zombies are like tearing at each other too well it kind of
1:50:45
makes it way less of a problem they would deal with each other pretty quick i would assume right yeah
1:50:51
it'd be a much better assassination virus because you could just release it on a public figure and everyone in the
1:50:57
room would tear each other the bits and then they would all just die yeah that uh
1:51:03
was a plasmid in bioshock where you can do that in rage or whatever oh yeah
1:51:09
or i was thinking that that dumb radio signal that was in the kingsmen that just makes everyone want to murder each
1:51:14
other but that's great they decided to spend the night at the
1:51:19
ruins frank builds a fire selena passes out right away
1:51:25
so quickly in fact that jim wakes her up to ask her how she fell asleep so fast and i just love that part just because
1:51:31
how dumb that is yeah like hey wake up she's like what why'd you fall asleep she's like what
1:51:38
that would be so mad if someone did that to me like how'd you fall asleep so fast well what are you what are you bothering me
1:51:44
for leave me alone yeah it's like i just went to sleep you're really gonna do that to me
1:51:50
can it do me like that yeah so she grumbles and pulls out her bag of pills
1:51:56
and they ask her about it and this is when she says oh yeah i qualified as a chemist so everyone but frank takes whatever it
1:52:04
is she's she's supplying i don't know if she specifies and they fall asleep near the fire
1:52:09
and i was just thinking what a security risk that is i mean i don't want to be a bummer for what is kind of a nice moment
1:52:15
they're around a roaring fire and they just had a nice picnic but it's a really big fire yeah and we've already proven
1:52:22
earlier in the movie that the infected are really attracted to light and activity and noise
1:52:29
and now only frank is well i was gonna say uninebriated but you know unaffected by a pill
1:52:35
so if something bad happens you'd have to like just carry them away or something yeah i i didn't during that scene i was
1:52:42
just like sleep in the car i've done it before it sucks but you can do it
1:52:47
yeah so jim has a horrible nightmare that he wakes up alone and abandoned
1:52:52
it's great he just like wakes up everyone's gone and there's just sheep running around on a distant hill are the sheep infected i
1:53:00
don't know it's in a dream so maybe it doesn't matter but yeah he's just calling for help he's
1:53:06
looking hello he gets woken up by frank who's you know just says oh you're having a bad dream
1:53:14
and he just says oh thanks dad i thought it was nice yeah no i thought
1:53:19
that was nice yeah so it's sort of sort of mockingly but also like a little honestly just like yeah he's kind of
1:53:25
like my dad he's really nice he's looking out for all of us now yeah
1:53:31
so then they do a little nightmare fake out where he wakes up alone again and it's just
1:53:38
really just so they can honk at him yeah i'm not a fan of a double nightmare you
1:53:43
know or a dream within a dream or anything like that yeah that's a slight mark down for me
1:53:52
so upon getting to manchester in the car they find the entire city just burning down in the distance
1:53:59
and i wrote that trash can man must have been down that way that's gonna let this thinking not
1:54:05
everyone has seen the stand i just realized but yeah yeah in the stand there's a crazy character who just burns
1:54:12
stuff down he also kills the devil guy at the end i guess i don't know the ending is really
1:54:18
confusing and stupid he like brings a nuclear bomb to the to the devil guy and then the hand of god
1:54:24
detonates it i guess yeah i mean that's how stephen king does things
1:54:31
so yeah spoiler alert for that whole thing yeah but whatever it's dumb it deserves to be spoiled yeah
1:54:38
spoilers i haven't seen the new one yet oh yeah i don't know if it's different i've heard bad things
1:54:44
bad things yeah pretty bad things although i don't like the original stand
1:54:50
very much but like i will say that the beginning half of it isn't super bad watching people die of the plague is really fun
1:54:57
well i will say peter i hate to inform you this in the 2020 mini series
1:55:02
the trash can man is played by ezra miller who you uh might know as uh the flash in uh zack
1:55:10
snyder's justice league oh no
1:55:16
yes again bringing it back
1:55:22
undefeated that's terrible
1:55:28
okay so they they finally reached the 42nd blockade which i guess is part of their coordinates for their destination
1:55:36
there are military trucks lined up all over the place some kind of a refugee camp
1:55:42
is all laid out but it's empty and abandoned frank gets really agitated he's pinned
1:55:49
all of his hopes on on this you know on getting here and and having something be there
1:55:55
and there's nothing and so selena says that they need to go and he's just like go where
1:56:01
like what are we where are we supposed to go what are we supposed to do yeah i mean i'd be pretty pissed too to
1:56:06
be honest because yeah we have no backup plan yeah
1:56:12
they should have at least been scouting out locations along the way just in case they have to double back you'd be like well we could stay at this place you
1:56:18
know like a nice house or something yeah so
1:56:23
he goes off by himself to deflate a little bit frank does yeah he sits down to have a good mope
1:56:29
but he uh but his thoughts are interrupted by a crow that's really high up picking at an infected corpse and calling down at him
1:56:37
what a jerk crow like why can't you just eat in peace why you got to be bug in frame
1:56:44
yeah what did he do well for one thing he goes over there and kicks the wall to shoo away the bird
1:56:51
and a single drop of corpse blood is knocked loose and falls right into frank's upturned eye
1:56:58
it's just perfectly like the worst possible thing that could happen like okay
1:57:04
i i hate this for so many reasons
1:57:10
i'm gonna listen off right now one all right uh i i like frank i i was
1:57:15
i was set to see him die just now we all like praying yeah and bummed me out two uh he feels like a
1:57:21
very contrived death like i'm not i'm not like i understand you probably let me like for plot reasons he needed
1:57:27
to die but like jesus christ can you like not come up with something better
1:57:33
three uh this also is the exact moment where like i feel like the movie takes downturn for
1:57:40
me hmm that's interesting because actually one of the alternate endings starts at this moment and then
1:57:46
has a whole other movie wait really yeah holy [ __ ]
1:57:51
it's called like the uh the radical ending or whatever they only had it in storyboards they didn't film
1:57:57
any of it because it's like a whole other ending that's interesting yeah i'll just say it now because it's totally different okay
1:58:04
so so in there in the radical one frank becomes infected they restrain him
1:58:11
and they i don't know how they restrain him but they they imprison him and they actually want to go find a cure
1:58:18
for him so he stays alive but he's but he's a rage monster
1:58:25
every zombie and they go find the source of the radio signal
1:58:31
and it's a lab it's a science lab i can already tell i don't hate this
1:58:36
yes you will and it's a science lab and it's it's not just any science lab
1:58:41
it's the science lab that had the chimps in it in the first part of the movie oh my god
1:58:49
this is like this is embarrassing and there's a man who's blockaded himself inside he's a scientist he
1:58:55
refuses to open the door to let them in you know he doesn't want to get infected and die he also doesn't want to give
1:59:00
them any of the food he has saved up but he explains to them through i don't know an intercom or something that
1:59:07
there's a way to cure the infection it's a real cure
1:59:13
and it turns out you have to do a full body blood transfusion with a
1:59:19
what do you call it a viable donor and as luck would have it they have one
1:59:25
but it's only one of them and it's gym so jim wants
1:59:31
jim wants hannah to have her dad back so jim elects
1:59:37
to die he gives all of his blood to frank well they trade blood
1:59:42
and so frank's infected blood ruins jim and turns him into a zombie
1:59:49
and he's the last shot of the movie is him strapped to the table looking at the monitors the same way the
1:59:55
chimp was okay that sucks so much
2:00:01
but but but this uh okay but we why
2:00:06
why transfer the blood to him why not just like store the blood safely and just let jim
2:00:13
die am i wrong that seems so stupid
2:00:20
yeah well i don't know maybe someday someone will give gym blood and sacrifice their own life yeah god
2:00:27
but danny boyle was saying that you know it didn't make sense for a lot of reasons i mean there was a single drop of blood could totally change your
2:00:34
physiology so like why it's not like you could go in and bleach your veins afterwards yeah even if all
2:00:40
your blood was replaced well also okay if there was this cure why are you not broadcasting that
2:00:48
well i mean you know i think he needed uh whatever that equipment is probably
2:00:53
like the blood transfusion devices you know the ones that pump pump it out and pump it
2:00:59
back in well sure but like it's still useful information to get out there you know potentially for someone
2:01:06
yeah this alternate ending is very similar to the ending of that vampire movie with
2:01:12
bill paxton is it near dark yeah whether a vampire is living in a
2:01:17
van i don't know man have you not seen that i don't think so oh man we should watch it at some point
2:01:24
so yeah there's a is a vampire cowboy hard to say vampire cowboy movie
2:01:31
and it's got bill paxton and they go to a bar they go to many bars and they bother a bunch of people
2:01:37
okay yeah it's yeah it's called near dark yes and at the end of the movie we'll
2:01:43
see now i don't want to give it away but whatever it's too late yeah you know a blood transfusion can cure vampirism in
2:01:49
that movie i don't know why that would be and also that just seems
2:01:54
dumb because in a way like when you're a vampire it's like you're damned for your sins so just washing it away with new blood
2:02:00
seems like cheating you know what i mean yeah like you can do all this terrible stuff and then have no repercussions
2:02:06
yeah and i'll just transmute my blood yeah sorry dude uh i killed those people but uh it was
2:02:13
vampire while it happened yeah i was a vampire then i had to but now i'm not so you know it's cool
2:02:20
oh there you go that's an idea for a movie a guy who goes around committing murders but then
2:02:25
uses a legal loophole by uh kieran's vampirism
2:02:30
yeah or just having a legal insanity but something that periodically happens to him and he
2:02:36
can control it or something maybe well i'm just thinking like vampire illegal thriller think about it
2:02:44
sure court trial of the vampire yeah this is this is why they don't let me make
2:02:49
movies by the way because kind of i actually counted the seconds after frank gets the blood in
2:02:56
his eye he takes 30 seconds to really start turning it's nice it actually gives them long
2:03:02
enough to you know seem shocked yeah and then and then hannah walks over is like dad you're okay he's like oh
2:03:08
yeah i'm fine you know you can go back to what you're doing and as she's walking away she's like oh wait hannah i
2:03:14
love you very much you know he gets to say his goodbyes yeah i i thought that was that was a
2:03:19
touching little moment yeah and then he starts flipping out and you know she goes to try to help him and
2:03:25
he pushes her away rather roughly because you know he doesn't want her near when he turns into a horrible zombie yeah
2:03:31
selena holds back hannah so that she doesn't go for him anymore and uh
2:03:37
jim stands by with his bat selena just shouts screams for him to kill him kill
2:03:42
him before it's too late kill him jim raises his bat he's about to hit
2:03:47
frank and then a hail of gunfire breaks out yo it's those soldiers we were waiting
2:03:52
for oh yeah just uh justin tyler this is the nick of time yeah
2:03:58
they essentially pop out of the bushes like they're not in ghillie suits but they're in camouflage fatigues so
2:04:04
they're almost blending in and they just blow them away and they shoot them like a lot they shoot him
2:04:10
enough that he falls down dead and then they keep shooting him in the back as he's laying there yeah some would say an excessive amount
2:04:18
well i mean during an infected outbreak i guess i can't really blame them it's just real harsh because you know he's a
2:04:23
known and beloved character you know it's just like oh that's pretty rough yeah
2:04:29
so the the three survivors what's left of them now are taking in a military caravan to
2:04:35
an isolated compound or an estate i think it's a mansion
2:04:41
there's barbed wire and sandbags everywhere men march around in their military fatigues
2:04:47
and then after they get there our leader appears and hey look it's christopher eccleston
2:04:54
surely we can trust this man yes he always plays a nice person
2:05:02
in this film he's a major henry west he shakes jim's hand and acknowledges
2:05:09
his name but doesn't ask for the names of hannah or selena it's just delicious that's a good
2:05:15
attention to detail there yeah he does he does give a little shake to selena's hand but he doesn't ask who
2:05:22
they are or anything in retrospect looking back on it now i'm just like huh that's interesting yeah i didn't notice
2:05:29
that the place has hot water as west tells them
2:05:34
so jim has a shower why not yeah why not let us take a look at his ass
2:05:40
yeah out the window he sees the military man driving frank's taxi around doing donuts
2:05:46
around the cook which is another like just small little bad sign you're like hmm
2:05:51
you know that's not even your car guys what are you doing here oh these guys are acting like they're soldiers or
2:05:57
something well i mean i don't mind them doing that with their own jeeps and stuff but it's
2:06:03
just the fact that they're driving a dead guy's car they just killed this guy yeah yeah
2:06:11
they have a little quiet moment you know the survivors and selena is pretty devastated she's grieving for
2:06:18
hannah's loss and for i suppose her own jim sort of misreads the moment and
2:06:24
kisses selena yeah what a terrible moment to do that
2:06:30
yeah like dude read the room well i mean she does reciprocate a bit i
2:06:36
guess she's because she wants to feel better but it is a weird time to do that and so she pushes him off and just
2:06:41
leaves the room yeah not a great call jim not a great call no
2:06:49
so later on jim talks to major west you know eccleston west apologizes for the
2:06:54
smallness of his operation jim says he just wanted to find the answer to infection as anyone would
2:07:02
and wes does say it's there but might not be what jim was expecting
2:07:08
the west also says that hundreds of infected or roving nearby fleshed out by the fires in manchester
2:07:15
i mean it's not a big point it's just nice that he points it out he's just like you know things are real dangerous out in the countryside right now
2:07:21
there's it was infected everywhere i do think that's a good detail for later on
2:07:26
because like otherwise it would just be a little bit weird because like they're out in the middle of nowhere so uh yeah they bothered to explain why
2:07:34
yeah i mean yeah i thought it was thoughtful yeah west gets up and says uh don't worry
2:07:40
you're safe here and weirdly rubs jim's head like he's a little kid or something yeah
2:07:46
well what is that i don't i don't know i guess it's supposed to show he's paternalistic and kind of condescending
2:07:53
or something
2:08:01
west takes jim out on a tour and shows him the fortified perimeter wall
2:08:06
which honestly is kind of a cool thing to go check out okay or at least if if you're into zombie
2:08:13
apocalypse anyway i mean i kind of want to know what it is you're doing and why yeah i mean
2:08:19
perimeters are cool he's got a high stone wall and then
2:08:25
the inner lawn is surrounded by flood lights that are connected to a generator he also mentions that the huge grassy
2:08:31
lawn is covered in trip wires and land mines which is great it seems like a real
2:08:37
mixed bag idea well you have to very carefully mark
2:08:42
where everything is just so that you don't blow yourself up when you're trying to maintenance anything yeah although it doesn't seem like they did
2:08:48
that which is like during a zombie apocalypse you don't have to worry about it just marking
2:08:55
i mean i don't think the zombies are going to care whether or not there's a colorful flag there or not yeah yeah
2:09:01
although that leads me to believe that maybe they did countenance the idea of fighting off regular humans as well
2:09:07
could be yeah which would be pretty nefarious
2:09:14
it seems like west mostly points out the advanced nature of his compound just
2:09:20
because they have a wood fire boiler it's just like yeah hot water and uh you know that's the cornerstone of
2:09:26
civilization i mean it's important i don't know i guess
2:09:32
it's better than not having it but i just feel like it's just like this is this is all you got all right
2:09:39
the military men are out harassing the cook in the kitchen his name is jones he seems like a sweet
2:09:45
lad i guess i guess i uh i don't think i'd put a guy like like
2:09:51
first of all have that guy get in the military i don't know i mean someone's gotta peel
2:09:57
the potatoes i guess but like jesus
2:10:03
yeah west is just like what are you preparing for us and jones says a surprise sir he just like has the
2:10:10
biggest ridiculous smile yeah
2:10:15
so finally at the end of the tour west shows jim the last denizen of the compound
2:10:20
out in an enclosed space surrounded by bloody sheets is private mailer an infected soldier
2:10:28
wes says he only got infected like two days prior so thinking of it this way the radio had
2:10:34
promised a cure for much longer before that so yeah was the theory of a cure a lie
2:10:41
until only like two days ago i would assume so
2:10:47
well maybe they had this idea like well we'll capture and infect it and then we'll starve it out just to see what it
2:10:52
does but why wouldn't you have done it sooner are they so incompetent that they can't just physically capture a zombie
2:10:59
yeah like yeah i'm not sure i mean you can just dig a pit and just
2:11:04
let them fall in and then just look at them every couple of days it'd actually be pretty easy
2:11:11
so i don't know i just like also i mean it's not like a jump scare but it
2:11:17
is like very close to being a jump scare it's like why don't you oh it kind of is yeah oh why would you keep those
2:11:23
sheets with the zombie i think he put the
2:11:28
sheets there to keep the blood spray from going willy-nilly oh you know what that makes yeah that makes a lot of
2:11:33
sense yeah but there are like bloody handprints on it and stuff yeah yeah that's an actual reason yeah
2:11:40
but the thing is they walk out there and west doesn't warn him and he almost thinks it's a little funny so like
2:11:46
mailer runs at them but he's got a chain around his neck he's chained to the far wall so he stops after a certain point
2:11:51
but he still you already know that they do projectile vomit stuff you know yeah and even if
2:11:57
they don't even if just like a little droplet of whatever is on his face you know because he's always moist if any of
2:12:02
that god on you you're you're done you're done so yeah so maybe like maybe look at them through
2:12:09
like a plastic screen you know or make them wear masks or something first yeah i mean like i i appreciated uh
2:12:17
this joke so wes says that the theory is
2:12:23
you know as i said these things don't have a future they're not setting up a society for themselves
2:12:29
they're not growing grain you know they're not feeding themselves they're not trying to do anything they
2:12:34
have no future and eventually they'll show him how long it'll take for them to starve to death
2:12:40
so yay i guess but i want to take a moment and talk about private mailer
2:12:45
i think he's awesome okay he's played by marvin campbell who is a stunt man who did stunts in
2:12:51
inception skyfall casino royale and the born ultimatum
2:12:58
i think he plays the zombie grace i love the way he painfully vomits up blood when they first meet him
2:13:08
he uh he makes it look like he would really suck to be zombie
2:13:13
yeah it really just points it out just oh man mailer shows up throughout the rest of
2:13:20
the movie i mean i guess that's a minor spoiler so i think he's a great hero zombie and i
2:13:25
mean hero in that you know that movie term where you know he's gets a lot of camera time and there's a
2:13:30
lot of focus on him yeah i think he really summarizes the rage virus pretty well
2:13:37
so dinner time approaches major west enters the rowdy mess hall like they're all all the soldiers are
2:13:43
singing and he takes off one of his subordinates hats which i just thought was really funny yeah
2:13:49
he's like hats he points out what they made tin ham ten peas ten beans and a special
2:13:58
surprise a great big omelet prepared by jones to cook hooray hey
2:14:04
where did they get these eggs from well i mean given what happens next
2:14:10
yeah i'm guessing they probably just looted them and didn't give much thought to it i actually did leave eggs for too long
2:14:18
and they were okay they were a little off that was when i was in
2:14:23
yeah i think i was in law school and i left eggs in the fridge for the entirety of i think it was
2:14:28
christmas vacation or something or maybe it was summer break they actually were sitting there maybe it was because they were refrigerated it
2:14:35
slowed down the process but even when they do that air gets into eggs
2:14:40
because the uh the shell is permeable to oxygen slowly over time
2:14:46
yeah so the air that gets in there will corrode everything and make it rotten and horrible so the way you test an egg is you put it
2:14:53
in water and if it floats like on its tip it means there's too much air in there and you can't eat it because it's it'll
2:15:00
poison you so i floated my eggs and they only kind
2:15:05
of moved a bit so like they seemed like they were on the verge and uh honestly they didn't taste great
2:15:11
when i ate them but they were still eatable in the past people used to just keep
2:15:16
chicken eggs at room temperature so i don't know all i'm saying is that in you know in the 28 days later scenario
2:15:23
i suppose you could still find a batch of eggs and it would be usable but even if that's true it wasn't true
2:15:30
for these eggs because major west toasts with a big old piece of omelette and just tries to eat it and then he just
2:15:37
very quickly just spits it all back out again but in that funny polite way we're just like he's trying not to chew it's just like blah you know yeah yeah
2:15:46
more is the pity that is funny though because like you're
2:15:52
so proud of making that omelette yeah and jones is just like uh
2:15:58
i thought the salt could cover the taste sir and just like man that's not what salt does
2:16:05
yeah scornfully west asks hannah if she's any good at cooking
2:16:11
you know like oh it goes right to the girl and asks her if she's any good at cooking
2:16:16
hmm i mean i'll forgive him for that one
2:16:22
you know yeah maybe she was just close by and he wanted to take the piss out of jones for
2:16:28
being a terrible cook yeah i mean because he does seem to be a terrible cook
2:16:33
yeah he actually likes comically bad as in like are people this bad at cooking in real
2:16:40
life i mean or if they haven't been his first job yeah yeah or if they are being literally
2:16:47
cook yeah this is the first time we're introduced to the soldier sergeant farrell who's
2:16:54
the resident philosopher he makes his first offering to the movie when he points out that mankind
2:17:00
is fairly new on a geologic scale and that a disease wiping us all out might be a return to normality
2:17:08
i mean it's sort of deep it's yeah it's not it's not deep it's like high school [ __ ]
2:17:16
at least he's trying i guess as soon as i heard that i'm like i don't like this guy
2:17:22
that's nothing he's gonna do is gonna redeem him in my eyes after this wow
2:17:28
damning words jacob well he's it's just like it's the most boilerplate
2:17:34
nihilistic like it doesn't matter because you know oh well that wasn't what i took from it
2:17:40
i was just thinking that maybe with the the absence of people that you know peace would return that basically we're
2:17:46
bringers of chaos and trouble that's still like now just
2:17:53
i no i can't i can't support what happens all right west says like oh well before all of
2:17:59
this started i saw people killing people and after it started i still just see people killing people
2:18:05
to him it's not that different which is honestly kind of terrifying yeah which is why this is also like
2:18:12
itchy high school [ __ ] like come on man i'm just saying you can't draw a
2:18:17
comparison between before the rage zombie virus and after come on yeah
2:18:23
hannah's refusing to eat the west asks her why she says that she just wants to bury her father frank he's one of those
2:18:30
dead guys that west was just talking about which was actually a pretty good little burn
2:18:36
it's like oh yeah those people killing people you were talking about yeah yeah one of those ones you just killed that
2:18:41
was my dad so a land mine goes off out on the lawn
2:18:46
and all of the officers spring up the flood lights flick on and gun fire breaks out yeah
2:18:53
it's a fun little scene where you can just tell that they're they're not super great soldiers they're not really trying to save their bullets and i feel like
2:18:59
you would want to do that when you can't make any more oh yeah absolutely i don't know how much they have they probably
2:19:05
have a lot but even if they do they're a little willy-nilly with it you'd be surprised you'd you know go
2:19:11
through uh bolts like that pretty quick there is a great part where
2:19:16
when infected is blown up by one land mine onto another landmine so he blows it twice
2:19:22
that was pretty good yeah it was amazing afterwards the soldiers swagger back in
2:19:28
victorious after the shootout and the soldier mitchell harasses selena
2:19:34
and takes her machete jim tries to stop him but mitchell is trained so he gets him into an arm lock
2:19:41
until sergeant farrell just comes up and knocks him off with the butt of his rifle
2:19:46
west reprimands farrell and mitchell taking back the machete west utters
2:19:51
slow down which sounds like adr to me yeah i was wondering about that
2:19:57
slow down just like you think you already know this guy's a
2:20:02
creepy i don't know if you needed to put that in there but yeah it really hammers at home though
2:20:09
yeah it's kind of funny how almost all of his lines are like we're evil do you get it
2:20:16
yeah i guess maybe i should have brought this up slightly sooner but there's almost no
2:20:21
scenario even when you first watch this where you're like oh yeah these are good guys and this is good oh well
2:20:27
no yeah it's like it's it's when yeah he's just waiting for the other
2:20:33
shoe to drop yeah so he hands the machete back to selena
2:20:39
selena stocks off immediately and then west offers jim a drink in his office or
2:20:44
lounge or whatever this is the first time watching the film that i noticed that west is opening the
2:20:50
pricey booze that frank had gathered up at the budget's grocery store oh i didn't notice that
2:20:56
yeah he's got the three black boxes that frank had picked up oh man jerk
2:21:02
yes but also it just it shows how pathetic they are that's like you know this is just stuff that frank just randomly stole from a grocery store and
2:21:09
this is supposed to be like a military operation and they just swiped his stuff yeah couldn't they have conducted a raid and
2:21:16
just gotten better stuff all on their own it was weird
2:21:22
yeah how little supplied they are considering that they could just go out and do that
2:21:28
west candidly reveals his motives which i guess in a way is shows a certain nobility i i guess or at
2:21:35
least for for being nefarious you know he explains that eight days ago jones was going to attempt suicide
2:21:42
because he said there was no future or whatever but i was just thinking that would major west have cared if jones had
2:21:48
killed himself i mean i think he would be not to be mean
2:21:54
i mean i think he would have cared but in a purely selfish way that they lost a guy who could be useful to him
2:22:01
well i suppose when there's very few humans left you kind of want to save every one of them
2:22:06
which is i think why he lays this out to jim maybe that's why he just wants to try to
2:22:12
convince him i mean this is not a good way to do it but at least he's being forthright funny although he does it in a sexist
2:22:18
way you know the better way to have done this well the best way would have been to not do it at all but the but a better way would have been to just
2:22:24
have the same speech he gives to jim but do it to all of them at the same time i don't know that they ever really
2:22:30
explain what the hell is going on to the women they just don't give a damn you know it shows like
2:22:35
a i don't know a carelessness and a i don't know a sexism maybe
2:22:42
i mean yeah like i don't even give a damn if you know or not i guess they pick up on it pretty quick
2:22:48
so yeah west says peter i'm sorry but yeah i think the uh the
2:22:54
people engaging in sex slavery might be sexists
2:23:00
possibly just to sum up i don't know if i explained this very clearly west just
2:23:05
says very simply i promised them women he promised them a future or some kind
2:23:10
of a future just so that humanity won't end and that's all i mean or at least i can
2:23:16
understand that concern but you didn't have to force anything i mean
2:23:22
like why not just let them stay and you know and treat them as normal people they're probably gonna choose one
2:23:28
of you anyway even though you guys suck well also like or at least there's the
2:23:33
option something i was thinking about uh not that i'm really like putting a whole lot of
2:23:39
thought into the logistics of this but i mean like they're not exactly equipped to become
2:23:46
some repopulation center yeah i think i've heard that a base population needs to be 250 genetically
2:23:54
diverse people well i just mean that there are a bunch of dumbasses out in the middle of nowhere in a
2:24:01
just like a mansion i don't know if they had just kept those
2:24:06
people and just you know left them alone i think there wouldn't have even been a conflict it's like well you know i mean
2:24:12
we would really like it if if we reconstituted the human race but i mean it's up to you guys it's cool
2:24:23
i feel like i feel like the people who kind of go down road that thinking about that kind of thing are
2:24:28
inherently not going to be very reasonable people well i guess that's true i suppose it's
2:24:34
all just based on such flawed and terrible premises that it was always going to be dark and horrible yeah
2:24:41
so jim rushes to grab hannah and selena you know he says they gotta go right now because you know they do
2:24:47
he leads them down the stairs and almost out the door but a soldier pops out from behind an indoor column and knocks him
2:24:54
out with a rifle butt to the face semi-conscious on the floor jim can see
2:24:59
sergeant farrell holding off the other officers at gunpoint the rest slowly encircle farrell and
2:25:05
tackle him before you can fire at any of them i actually thought that was a really cool scene because it shows that there
2:25:10
was some division and disagreement amongst them about what they were doing and why
2:25:16
maybe just farrell was the only holdout i'm not sure but yeah that's part of why i give him
2:25:23
credit he alone of all of the military guys opposes sexual slavery
2:25:30
way to make the minimum feral yeah it's like a participation award
2:25:36
west kneels down and offers jim his life if he goes along with their uh yeah the enslavement of the two women
2:25:43
jim says nothing so west sends him and farrell to be executed
2:25:48
actually he imprisons them first he's not a monster
2:25:55
yeah i'll let you think about dying for a while before i make you die i think maybe he just needed time to
2:26:01
prepare them or something so jim and farrell are imprisoned for a short time
2:26:08
farrell rambles on for a while but he does propose the idea that the infection did not reach the rest of the world
2:26:14
and that the uk mainland was quarantined and isolated while that happens life just went on
2:26:21
everyone else just kind of watched it happen yeah it's a nice thought i guess
2:26:27
there's a mournful little tune as they mark the scene change to a wooded path
2:26:32
jim and farrell are being marched out to their execution spots and there's like a pile of bodies there so i guess they've
2:26:38
been doing other executions but i don't know why i mean maybe that's where they've been sending
2:26:43
the corpses of the infected or maybe this is where other dissidents have been killed so maybe there was a much bigger
2:26:49
group and they've just been killing them over time all right yeah they're just kind of clear
2:26:55
but i mean you know they do have that one guy who got uh infected yeah
2:27:02
farrell warns mitchell that things will go badly for him and i always like a good foreshadowing threat
2:27:08
one way or another you'll get yours well that's not what he says it's more
2:27:13
like things will go badly for you it's like yeah okay whatever
2:27:19
yeah okay dude yeah jones and mitchell are to do the execution uh what a dream team duo they
2:27:27
are hey okay can you say that i really enjoyed the casting for the
2:27:33
soldiers because like they just find the goofiest looking dudes
2:27:41
yeah this isn't even the b team it's the d-minus team yeah
2:27:47
yeah mitchell wants to stab feral to death with a bayonet which is just that's just insane
2:27:53
yeah honestly as an execution method that's brutal why would you want to do that because
2:27:59
he's he's a maniac i guess yeah yeah so jones insists that they just shoot
2:28:05
them quickly and be done with it i don't think he wants any part of this but he just has to do it yeah mitchell refuses
2:28:12
farrell spits in mitchell's face you know for wanting to stab him to death like a dog
2:28:18
mitchell yeah that's what i would do mitchell seems about to stab when jones
2:28:25
aims a hasty hip shot into feral shooting past mitchell and killing feral
2:28:31
and he like he hurts his ear you know like you could tell like how like poorly done of a shot it was that it was just
2:28:36
real poorly aimed shot past his friend just to kill the guy just before
2:28:42
mitchell can stab him it makes them seem real real amateurish
2:28:48
he tackles jones you know and and in the confusion jim just slips away
2:28:56
it seems weird to me that it feels like the soldiers believe that
2:29:02
everything in the world is as bad as it is there but like why would they believe that
2:29:09
well if you remember earlier selena did say that there was infections in paris and new york
2:29:15
and then everything went dark well yeah but like i feel like america could probably like handle the rage
2:29:21
virus i mean if there's i look if there's one thing that we're
2:29:27
really good at doing uh it's
2:29:32
killing loads of loads of dudes it's like it's like our thing
2:29:38
yeah it's not like they're like out in like hiding either they're just like out the streets i guess the perspective of the military
2:29:45
guys is pretty bad i mean it's just well i i guess when you're on the street or whatever you know by yourself you
2:29:51
might think that the world has ended in the way that selena you know does or jim does but when you're a little
2:29:58
organization you know you've spent some time you've reached out with frequencies at least i i assume they've tried
2:30:05
no i wonder if if they were to plug in a satellite radio it would just work fine they're like oh damn it
2:30:11
like honestly it will be really dark they do just kind of assume that it's all bad everywhere but yeah well if it's
2:30:18
like what if it's just not yeah like i said don't you just wait
2:30:24
well yeah this thing is it would make all the the violence and suffering like feel extra pointless
2:30:29
yeah as i said before the execution spot already had a large pile of dead bodies
2:30:35
so all jim had to do was lay down amongst them good good thing jones and mitchell are
2:30:40
both kind of stupid i honestly it's a good tactic
2:30:45
although to their defense jones does shoot that pile of bodies later when they come back first they run off
2:30:51
looking for him and then you know then they double back and shoot everything but by that point jim's moved on
2:30:58
jim's hands are still bound you know i think they're tied up yeah but he somehow manages to scramble
2:31:04
over a high wall topped by a barbed wire and he and he loses his shirt in the process but his hands are still bound so
2:31:11
that's physically impossible yeah uh it is interesting to note that uh in the
2:31:17
scene does develop magical powers yeah okay i mean i do love this movie
2:31:24
but from here on out jim for a while it's like he got a star in warrior
2:31:30
brothers and like nothing can hurt him and he can just knock out anything
2:31:38
because yeah he just you can do whatever he needs to do he travels long distances he doesn't die of exposure from walking
2:31:45
around in miserable cold rain without a shirt on yeah i mean he's determined well here's the
2:31:52
thing he gets over the wall he's still bound he collapses you know he's at his wit's end
2:31:57
it's super bleak he's on the wrong side of the wall he'll probably just be killed by an infected and then he just looks up and he sees a
2:32:03
smoke trail there's a there's a plane it's a plane flying over and apparently no one else noticed it
2:32:10
to his credit that would give you a great deal of optimism that everything will be okay but even if it's not okay
2:32:16
it gives you that sense of uh of righteousness for just how awful these military guys
2:32:22
are here and also how much it won't matter if they just die peter are you saying
2:32:28
that he was uh using the power of hope
2:32:33
yeah he's powered he's powered by hope yeah
2:32:41
i see like this is what i mean about like that's the power of love
2:32:48
yeah okay i almost saw something i'm glad you said it but that's like this movie feels like such a different
2:32:55
movie from what it was at the beginning at this point yeah
2:33:01
i don't know in a way i think that the optimism is something that is in gym the whole time i mean he's saying
2:33:07
nice things about everybody the whole way through i mean earlier on he was talking to selena and she's like
2:33:13
we should leave frank and hannah behind they're kind of a drag on us and he's just like no they're good people you
2:33:18
know we should no it's it's not so much the hope it's the like i know like action man-less nonsense oh
2:33:26
yeah absolutely it becomes very action man at the end yeah
2:33:32
so jones spots the shirt up in the wire and laments that he got away mitchell insists that since jim is tied
2:33:39
up shirtless carlos and stranded on the wrong side of the wall he might as well be dead
2:33:45
and jones is just dull enough that he goes along with it and they just head back to base i mean to be honest i probably would
2:33:52
assume the same thing yeah maybe so i would i would not assume that he would
2:33:58
gain revenge man powers and go on a absolute massacre
2:34:05
yeah spoiler for everything that's about to happen well whatever we're right about to get to it anyway
2:34:12
oh you know i just got to that part in my notes where you know we're talking about the airplane and i actually wrote
2:34:17
hope hope jacob [Laughter]
2:34:24
jesus so even when i was watching the movie that's where i was thinking yeah
2:34:30
so in the meantime the military men are busy making the lives of hannah and selena miserable now that their ugly
2:34:36
fade has been laid bare west is the only one not openly enjoying the torment but
2:34:41
then again it was his idea to do things this way in the first place this is what he thinks survival is
2:34:49
so selena and hannah are brought up to the late lady of the house's chambers to change into outfits that military
2:34:55
officers prefer so in desperation while they're trying to
2:35:01
strip down selena she kisses one of the officers to get his attention so she can make a hasty demand
2:35:06
it has got to be one of the juiciest grossest looking kisses i have ever seen
2:35:12
okay i'm glad i'm not the only one who realized or noticed that that was uh you could see
2:35:19
like some kind of a goo on the guy's lips like it looks so gross terrible
2:35:24
selena just does it so that she can insist that they be alone to change like can you just do the bare minimum decent
2:35:30
thing and just get out of here for just 30 seconds or whatever yeah
2:35:35
and so you know the guy's like all right fine come on fellas let's get out of the room
2:35:42
and as soon as they saunter out of there selena just grabs her pill bag and gives a little handful of stuff to hannah and hannah
2:35:49
asks if selena is going to poison her and selena says no i'm going to make you not care
2:35:58
oh i said it's so bleak yeah that's like
2:36:04
possibly more bleak than if it was poison
2:36:09
yeah so an alarm rings out it turns out it's
2:36:14
jim out in the rain at the refugee location he's just cranking an alarm manually
2:36:21
just waiting for them still you should have put on a pancho or something that's right folks jim is shirtless and
2:36:28
cranking it in public yep just moist and drenched just cranking it
2:36:39
i'm not proud of it yeah we're children this is awful
2:36:44
i thought that several soldiers went out to get him but i think it might have just been two so i think it's major west
2:36:50
yeah the leaders and then there's the i don't know the other guy's name but it's just a guy with a real
2:36:56
horrible haircut just just the worst he's does he even say anything in the movie
2:37:02
but like he was the one i appointed i don't know if he does at least what i pointed to first is like
2:37:07
these guys look like absolute degenerates
2:37:12
he's got just like patches of his hair shaved off i don't understand what's going on with him at all
2:37:18
it's a it's mystifying so this guy with the bad haircut he's climbing up a ladder
2:37:24
and uh in his moment of vulnerability jim runs up with a pipe in his hand and just
2:37:30
bashes him in the face and that's the end of that guy yeah not cool man
2:37:37
there's a lot of weird shots of of jim hiding behind things or darting around like he's like a force of nature or
2:37:42
something that's not insane you yeah it's just a guy
2:37:49
yeah it's it's kind of a shame because like i do i do like the like guy still fully taking down
2:37:56
armed adversaries kind of scene but it's like if you it comes out
2:38:02
of nowhere it's improbable and i like i actually like the way the rest of this movie goes
2:38:07
but i just i think i would have tweaked this part a little bit because he doesn't need to have killed soldiers or
2:38:13
whatever i mean what happens for this is that he kills that soldier he puts him in a jeep you know west goes to drive
2:38:20
away he finds his dead soldier there he gets weirded out the wires are torn out so he can't drive away so west just
2:38:26
walks away in the woods and now jim has a gun he stole the dead guy's rifle
2:38:32
that's all the scene was and that's all the scene needed so he uses the gun later to
2:38:38
well he sabotages stuff at the base we'll get it there soon but you could have done that other ways
2:38:45
yeah yeah you didn't need to do this part where you like stealthily take down people these are trained military guys i mean
2:38:52
they might not be real ones or good ones they could just be sort of weekend warrior volunteer types
2:38:58
but whatever they are they still have more training than a bike career
2:39:04
yeah i don't know i would give them more credit than this you know just being ambushed so easily
2:39:11
although to his credit west when he's looking for him does just kind of spray bullets kind of indiscriminately
2:39:16
wherever i just thought it'd be so funny because he's spraying the the refugee tents and stuff what if someone showed up because
2:39:23
they were following the radio signal like hey i heard you still
2:39:30
i mean look there are a lot of things you could do to improve the humor of this movie
2:39:35
thank god oh the guy's name was davis the one with
2:39:41
the bad hair yeah okay well whatever he's dead now yeah so some infected are drawn by the noise
2:39:47
west blows them away yeah and then he wanders off into the woods
2:39:52
jim i don't know how here's the other improbable part so jim somehow made his way back onto the compound without
2:39:58
blowing himself up so he climbed over the outer wall he walked across the minefield
2:40:05
he got all the way to the back the backyard area to that barbed wire i don't know maybe the barbed wire was
2:40:11
like real close on the back end so you could just lean in i i guess but that's not very good
2:40:17
security so for whatever reason jim's somehow able to get back there to where you know
2:40:22
mailer is chained up to the wall and so he aims with the rifle and i'm actually really
2:40:28
glad that he isn't a very good shot you know it actually takes a few bullets to break the chain yeah i think even if
2:40:35
you're a good shot you probably have to shoot a chain a lot to make it break probably but i'm just glad that you know they
2:40:41
didn't do that dumb movie thing where as soon as you try to do a thing it just gets done perfectly you know like as soon as you try to shoot a rope it just
2:40:48
breaks it well yeah i mean even if you're decently skilled with a gun
2:40:55
given his condition probably would take a couple of shots to get it right well he has had a long day
2:41:02
the ladies are sitting in fancy red dresses on some kind of a sofa surrounded by
2:41:07
armed men it's uh jones the cook mitchell the kind of a rapist guy
2:41:14
and uh i don't know the other guy's name huh peter i think they're all kind of a
2:41:20
rapist guy yeah well okay yeah but mitchell is
2:41:25
is the most but i don't want to go into degrees like i hate
2:41:31
he's the foremost rapist yeah
2:41:36
yeah and then the other guy is the guy with the silly hat that selena kissed earlier with the gross juicy mouth
2:41:43
hmm jones sends mitchell to investigate a noise i think i'm not sure why exactly
2:41:49
he sends him away i guess he he probably hears mailer running around outside
2:41:54
okay this is terrible i'm like i'm imagining one of those old greaser style gangs where one of the
2:42:01
guys has a nickname juicy mouth ah
2:42:06
my boy
2:42:16
that's good yeah it's going to keep me going for a while hannah i guess was able to take the
2:42:21
pills because she's tripping pretty hard on them now so she just sort of wonders aloud like
2:42:27
you know where the searching party was you know davis and west she thinks they're both dead and if so you know does that make jones
2:42:34
in charge is that how it works and i was just thinking hell no i'm pretty sure jones is
2:42:39
probably like the lowest rank of anybody here although what if he wasn't oh man
2:42:45
wouldn't that be amazing he actually is the the commanding officer afterwards
2:42:51
they're like oh my god west please don't risk your life we can't have jones be in charge
2:42:56
it'll be ahead of us spoilers that definitely isn't the case because i did read
2:43:03
both of the 28 days later comic book times oh wow
2:43:10
yeah okay and uh since this is just a thing i do now i
2:43:15
guess sure we'll briefly discuss them [Music] in our
2:43:21
last kind of roundup sure so the guy in the hat with the juicy mouth
2:43:28
he's just out the window it's a great shot because they look out
2:43:33
the window and there's nobody there and then they the same shot like they go back to it and suddenly mailers there
2:43:39
making like a crazy face and uh he just bashes the window open and just pulls him out
2:43:46
actually no no he goes indoors with him so they're just struggling on the floor and then mailer just vomits all over his
2:43:52
face more of that projectile vomit yeah i forgot jones
2:43:57
joe's is in the room he's got a gun in his hands but he doesn't fire at mailer he just fires wildly in the
2:44:03
air i have no idea why he does that yeah well i was thinking i guess maybe he was
2:44:10
trying to frighten mailer away without having to shoot him maybe he just doesn't want to shoot anyone
2:44:15
i get yeah i guess there's like a couple of things like this the guy who like doesn't have any
2:44:22
bullets the hell is that oh yeah that's a little bit later but yeah like you didn't plan
2:44:28
for having bullets ever i don't remember you firing any yeah so either jones is firing in the
2:44:34
air or maybe he's just that bad of a shot i have no idea either way mailer infects the soldier and uh you
2:44:41
know that's about that for that guy hannah and selena flee they try to run outside but are stopped by mitchell and
2:44:47
another soldier another soldier i don't know the name of
2:44:53
you know he's like what's going on here and then they're interrupted by jones screaming and running past them followed
2:44:58
by mailer it was pretty great actually it had a nice cmd feel to it i was going
2:45:04
to say a kind of funny comic moment jim appears at the kitchen window and
2:45:10
inside jones is hiding in a kitchen cabinet while mailer searches for him
2:45:15
the soldier who had been with mitchell appears in the kitchen doorway with his own gun trained on mailer he's like what
2:45:20
you gonna do now but the guy the juicy mouth guy comes back he's infected now
2:45:26
and he uh tackles the the guy from the side and and they just rip him apart on the kitchen table mailer in him it's
2:45:33
pretty awful actually yeah they eating him up
2:45:39
and it's not like a quick death it's like a real a real long painful death
2:45:45
yeah jones has to listen to it while he's trapped in the cabinet yeah you almost feel bad for the guy
2:45:52
almost yeah almost the remaining soldiers retreat upstairs with the women
2:45:57
well it's not super clear to me the editing gets a little weird here but i think that whoever's left just goes
2:46:03
upstairs jones creeps out of the cabinet and makes a break for the exit but he gets
2:46:09
bayoneted by jim poor guy i mean should we feel bad
2:46:14
no probably not i mean he did just kill farrell and he's kind of gone along with everything that
2:46:20
they've done i mean he's kind of sweet in his own way i guess but yeah
2:46:25
not really i don't feel bad no there's a weird scene where jim is being
2:46:31
pursued by the infected and he sneaks through a secret door on
2:46:37
the wall i don't know how he knows that's there but you know after he closes it the infected are confused and so then they
2:46:43
run after other noises tracking other people i don't recall him ever knowing about any trap doors that's a little weird
2:46:51
i found out there's a deleted scene where he goes through some floorboards to hide from them
2:46:57
that's equally weird i don't know why you would do that either yeah chances yeah major west returns i
2:47:03
guess he yeah he just walked back he finds jones dying on the open doorstep
2:47:10
west comforts him until he dies it's sort of sweet i guess
2:47:16
i yeah i guess thank you i suppose he's there for his last moments at least
2:47:23
hannah is in the bathroom upstairs by herself when an infected soldier runs in you know juicy mouth guy
2:47:28
yeah the infected is he's transfixed by the full-length mirror in the corner
2:47:34
and hannah is hiding behind it they do that thing where they get super close you know but he doesn't know she's there
2:47:40
but she does and she's trying not to make a noise jim is running around the halls of the
2:47:46
mansion now calling out for hannah and selena he barricades himself in a lovely room painted with flowering trees
2:47:53
in the foreground however are two creepy looking dolls that are looking at each other
2:47:58
i don't know if he knows that yeah weird looking well my phone's dead
2:48:04
oh maybe you should plug it in yeah well too late for that
2:48:12
okay um oh yeah and it's weird because you don't notice him at first but there's another soldier hiding in the
2:48:17
room i mean i don't remember this guy ever doing anything bad but he's just another guy i mean he's involved i
2:48:22
suppose yeah look i'm sure he was in the background smirking yeah i'm sorry they're all complicit
2:48:30
he shouts out that he hasn't got any more bullets and so the infected attacks the door i
2:48:35
guess because they're making too much noise and jim just climbs out the window as they're bursting in and attack the
2:48:41
ammo list soldier and uh he dies a terrible death too oh yeah
2:48:47
selena and mitchell are up near the attic he's kind of holding him hostage
2:48:52
huh it was kind of his fault just put bullets in your gun stupid oh yeah i
2:48:58
don't know what the hell he was thinking maybe they were just out of ammo but they didn't want to admit it i mean
2:49:04
that'd be right yes yeah well then yeah that'd be weirdly dark
2:49:10
whether they don't want to acknowledge that they're going to be doomed soon too
2:49:15
selena's being held hostage by mitchell somewhere up near the top of the house jim re-enters up from above somewhere
2:49:22
like through a window yeah so he's up in the attic above them
2:49:28
and see i i keep losing track of where jim is on on these notes i keep saying jim's here and then jim's just in this other
2:49:34
place i feel like there's some weird editing here so i you know this is where he seems to be now yeah
2:49:41
because he does jump down mitchell makes some threats to selena and then jim appears and just starts
2:49:48
bashing his head against the brick wall just over and over again selena doesn't really know what's going
2:49:53
on blood is spraying all over the place getting all over jim jim knocks him to the ground and then just forces his
2:50:00
thumbs into his eyes classic oh yeah that's it's very memorable and
2:50:07
very awful yeah and that high almost like silly scream
2:50:13
that the guy gives like yeah listen kids do you ever really want to
2:50:19
[ __ ] someone up go for the eyes chimps know it now you do too
2:50:24
so selena thinks jim might be infected so she grabs her machete he gets up all creepily without saying
2:50:31
anything and then he sort of starts to rush at her i'm just like what are you thinking dude
2:50:36
psych yeah oops so she swings the machete but stops just before hitting him
2:50:43
can't bring herself to do it and you know he looks at that he looks at the machete he looks back at her and
2:50:48
says that was a bit more than a heartbeat
2:50:54
it's very sweet they kiss yeah but yeah it's i mean they said it a few times you know
2:50:59
throughout the movie she's like listen goes wrong you're gone in a heartbeat but you know it's kind of a movie thing
2:51:05
you know just like oh the thing you said earlier yeah it's cute it's camp
2:51:11
it's cute it's a nice little moment in uh an extraordinarily bleak scene
2:51:17
he just he just ruined a man's eyes with with his thumbs so i yeah i'm okay with the
2:51:22
silly line they kiss although they kiss a little weirdly
2:51:29
because when hannah comes in she hits him with a vase i thought he was biting you
2:51:37
which is a great joke and then and then he sees her you know looks her straight in the face is like are you stoned
2:51:43
which is also a great joke yeah it's like boom boom boom
2:51:50
hitting all the all the notes hannah selena and jim
2:51:56
are together again at last they run out into the rain and get to the car so that they can drive away
2:52:02
but unfortunately west is sitting within in the back seat when jim throws open the door
2:52:08
you killed all my boys so he pulls a pistol and shoots jim in the stomach hannah climbs into the
2:52:15
driver's seat and puts the car in reverse she parks the car at the doorway of the mansion
2:52:20
and mailer breaks open the rear window and drags a screaming major west into the mansion to his death
2:52:26
yeah what a way to go yeah another slow horrible death i'm sure oh at least
2:52:33
you can get his eyes gouged out jesus yeah really
2:52:39
that's one of those things right you saved that for me like the main villain good lord well mitchell said a lot of
2:52:47
unfortunate things to selena so i wonder if that was triggering jim in a way it made him want to kill him
2:52:53
i suppose so i'm just saying it's like there aren't many movies that do it but it is kind of
2:53:00
i guess like funny in a way when there's an especially graphic death for like the guy who isn't
2:53:06
the big bad and then the big bad just kind of gets like blown up or whatever it's like what was that about
2:53:13
i guess you just really hated that guy or shoot like uh maybe they had another
2:53:19
story yeah like uh was it jurassic world when that one has
2:53:25
like a five minute long death scene for no reason yeah she was nice she was like babysitting
2:53:32
the kids i know and they kept like getting away from her which was not her fault
2:53:37
and then yeah then she gets carried away by like a pterodactyl yeah
2:53:42
and picked that and dropped a couple of times and then yeah and then that giant thing comes out of the water and just
2:53:48
bites her in half well actually i guess just christian well yeah yeah
2:53:53
it's like why who's the person from that that's so messed up she didn't deserve that
2:54:02
selena helps jim into the car west dies they drive away and as they do
2:54:08
mailer stands in the doorway and just howls victoriously into the rainy night
2:54:18
i don't know why i just i'm pleased by like you know like the chaos has one type thing where like the thing is just like yeah i did it
2:54:27
i killed so many of them yeah the compound gates are locked
2:54:34
so i mean if there's a compound gate and if it is locked then how the hell did
2:54:40
anyone get it maybe maybe west locked it on his way back because otherwise
2:54:46
yeah yeah i guess because jim somehow got in close enough to release mailer so
2:54:52
maybe the door was open then but then they locked it later i mean the only way i can explain it
2:54:58
yeah anyway jim just tells hannah to just bash through it
2:55:04
and uh when they hit they're like ejected out of their seats and they do like a freeze frame like it's like a 1970s movie or something or like yeah
2:55:11
dude yeah so you're probably wondering how i got into this situation
2:55:17
yeah 28 days later dot dot dot
2:55:24
this by the way this is the point when there's several different alternate endings so i'll just go with the real
2:55:29
one now and then we'll go to the alternates after that all right so this is the real ending everybody jim
2:55:36
wakes up in a nice bed in a nice cottage he's still recovering from the gunshot wound
2:55:41
a finished jet flies over the english countryside where infected place dying
2:55:46
of starvation it is actually pretty cool looking they must have gotten some really emaciated
2:55:52
looking guys to just look hungry and just lay on a street yeah also can you think of any other zombie movies
2:55:59
where like starvation of the zombies has been a thing
2:56:07
yeah it's like it feels like something that should be able to happen to zombies but
2:56:13
it just doesn't come up it's interesting it does seem like certain zombies and certain things get kind of dormant and
2:56:19
then they wake up when something's nearby yeah i guess they want excuses to have them
2:56:25
continue to be a threat otherwise it's just a temporary thing that happens and then goes away
2:56:31
sure so selena is busy preparing fabric hannah bursts in and says she hears it
2:56:38
coming they rush out with armfuls of blankets and stuff they lay it out in a wide grassy bank
2:56:44
the giant letters that say hello oh i forgot there's a real brief footage of uh what's-her-face selena reviving jim
2:56:52
in an abandoned hospital so i guess it worked because he's alive and while he's
2:56:58
unconscious you know you briefly see written on a hill says hell but it's actually the giant letter is hello and
2:57:03
they just hadn't finished the o yet so it's like a little misleading i kind of like that
2:57:09
the jet flies over them and and hannah says do you think he saw us that time
2:57:15
and they go to credits yay i like that the ending is like
2:57:20
it's hopeful yeah no it's a really nice ending and it has a nice little song at the end too
2:57:26
i only know it's a finished jet by the way because i read it somewhere because i don't know that language at all
2:57:32
yeah i looked it up on wikipedia so
2:57:38
here's one of the alternate endings you know there was a little bit of footage jim getting revived
2:57:44
so there was the there was that footage of jim being revived on an operating table correct
2:57:50
yeah well in the first alternate ending they aren't able to save him
2:57:56
celia tries very hard and he doesn't wake up selena is crushed hannah and her go on
2:58:04
alone and sort of end out the they just walk out a hospital door kind of swings around and just
2:58:11
shuts and that was actually the original ending of the movie they filmed it and
2:58:16
and had it as the original for screeners and stuff
2:58:22
danny boyle calls this the true ending actually really yeah just a real bleak ending but the
2:58:29
audiences didn't like it for one thing i mean they thought that the two ladies were doomed after they left the hospital
2:58:36
i don't know if that's true or not but i mean it's just too sad of an ending after everything that happened you just
2:58:41
haven't died kind of dumb at the end yeah boyle was saying that he wanted a
2:58:47
circular thing to jim's character where he starts on a hospital bed and then he ends on one
2:58:53
yeah i don't think that matters at all no i can i can i can see that but i feel like
2:58:58
i don't expect to say this but i feel like if you're gonna have an ending that dark you might as well go all out with it
2:59:05
you know like uh everyone die oh yeah like the the mistakes uh when the greatest dark
2:59:12
endings it's so good
2:59:17
[Laughter] i mean like that one's that one's so
2:59:23
dark that it's honestly kind of funny
2:59:31
yeah but yeah that's true that's true needless to say that one's got a the mist is a real rough ending without
2:59:36
going into the details sure so that was ending number one the focus
2:59:42
groups didn't like it so then they changed it so then ending number two jim dies on the operating table again
2:59:50
all right selena and hannah go live in the cottage you know that's seen in the standing we've seen
2:59:56
selena delivers the lines she gave to jim in that scene to a chicken who is
3:00:01
inside instead and then they go then they go lay out the letters but there's you know but all
3:00:07
the scenes of jim are just removed it's a similar ending to to this one
3:00:13
except you know jim's dead see and then the third ending was the
3:00:19
anyways it's the third one the finish pilot is revealed to be a rage zombie
3:00:26
yeah they have learned to fly now the final ending actually we've
3:00:33
already discussed that that's the the totally different ending yeah yeah where frank is restrained and jim gives his
3:00:39
life to save so basically jim dies in all of them well uh [Music]
3:00:45
fun little fact the comics give some insight into jim's fate after uh the
3:00:52
movie and it's not much better oh really yeah
3:00:58
that's too bad well lay it on me yeah so
3:01:04
basically jim is arrested for his role in the death of major west and the soldiers
3:01:11
and he's scheduled to be executed by firing squad and they don't
3:01:17
rescue him or go into that at all
3:01:22
as far as i know it's it's an official tie-in so unless they ever go back to
3:01:29
gym in any of the other 20 whatever movies that's his fate
3:01:34
he just he gets executed wow that sucks yeah
3:01:41
that aside that comic was fine uh there is another one which is
3:01:46
kind of interesting it's an anthology of just like different stories
3:01:52
which actually we're talking about what the virus was created for and they
3:01:59
give an explanation which i don't really like and i forgot about it until i was
3:02:04
looking over a summary basically the scientists were going to spread
3:02:09
around a virus that uh it's a yeah it's contagion
3:02:15
that controls people's aggressive impulses and
3:02:20
they genetically modify the ebola virus for some reason to carry it
3:02:26
and however this causes the virus to mutate reversing the event
3:02:33
now i don't like that because it like explicitly goes against what the scientists said in
3:02:38
the beginning about having to understand before you hear well i mean he might have just been
3:02:44
talking out of his butt or something but i i guess yeah it's just like i don't i don't really like that one of the
3:02:50
stories is fun because it uh it's like in the initial stages of the infection
3:02:56
and it shows one of the free chimps fighting someone yeah which is like yeah i mean i suppose
3:03:03
they had to have to get it going yeah which is just kind of funny because it is like it's like darkly funny
3:03:10
because it has wires in its brain and whatever and she's like i think they're like out in like a picnic and this thing
3:03:16
just like jumps out and bites a guy how surreal would that be
3:03:21
yeah that's pretty weird they're fine you know really uh
3:03:26
you don't get a lot out of it to like further insight into the story or whatever it's just kind of like eh you
3:03:32
know okay yeah if you're interested you can check it
3:03:37
out yeah yeah yeah i just wrote
3:03:43
for for the alternate ending so that all the alternate endings suck
3:03:49
i love that this movie has a good ending or at least a happy ending i mean like after every everything they've been
3:03:54
through it'd be so horrible to just end on a sour note yeah the first one
3:04:01
the first culture and ending you talk about the hostile i think i feel like that's fine but it just wouldn't have uh
3:04:09
i feel like i'd have less you know less of an opinion of the movie yeah there'd be i think it'd be a little
3:04:15
less memorable unless i'd have less fondness certainly yeah
3:04:21
most of the wide shots of london had moving traffic that were edited out with cg
3:04:27
and uh the major london thoroughfares were cordoned off for filming for only minutes at a time danny boyle was only
3:04:34
able to do this by using small portable cameras so they could get in there really fast you know film cillian murphy
3:04:41
standing around in garbage and then just take down the cordons right away huh
3:04:46
yeah i mean that pretty sense that's interesting though yeah they flipped over that bus and that one scene the the
3:04:53
double decker they flipped it over and unflipped it in a around a half hour period of time
3:05:00
so it's just long enough for cillian to stand there you know film it a little bit and then they moved it yeah
3:05:06
which is pretty great this movie single-handedly reinvigorated
3:05:11
the entire zombie genre when it was large but it was largely dead it
3:05:17
it was also was this movie to blame yeah you can blame this one it also was the first introduction of
3:05:24
fast zombies which numerous subsequent films would utilize such as zack snyder's remake of dawn of
3:05:31
the dead just two years later the movie only cost eight million
3:05:37
dollars to make and grossed 10 million dollars on the opening weekend and eventually 85 million
3:05:44
worldwide and it was a huge success
3:05:50
i mean i looked up various rankings and it is currently the 12th highest
3:05:55
grossing zombie film ever made or at least a website called workingmoney.com said
3:06:02
so and i choose to believe it sure why not what uh other movies be to that
3:06:10
uh most of them were resident evil films yes i do it
3:06:15
also i think the re not the remake the sequel 28 weeks later i think actually
3:06:20
grossed more so did world war z even though that movie sucks ass
3:06:26
well i have cheese yeah that's a bun i mean i don't want to poop on it but yeah
3:06:31
i'm not fond of that movie i think that one's real high up too which is a shame
3:06:37
yeah we so we will probably not be discussing that movie
3:06:42
oh no i'm not going to say that i'll discuss anything but uh but if we
3:06:47
do i'm going to be uh yeah i'm going to be pooping all over it so you know yeah to look forward to dude that's
3:06:53
going to be miserable we're both gonna hate it i don't know i'm looking forward to when we finally do our first podcast about a
3:07:00
movie that we both just hate i don't know about you but those are my
3:07:05
favorite podcasts where i just hear someone just just dripping with contempt for a movie you know or whatever it is
3:07:11
they're talking about yeah oh god this is just so terrible that could be your job i don't know if i
3:07:18
want to subject myself to that
3:07:23
all right we'll see so rotten tomatoes has this film at 87
3:07:29
which is pretty good yeah metacritic has it at 73.
3:07:36
i think that's good but i'm actually not sure oh yeah so jacob on a scale from 1 to 10
3:07:44
how do you rate 28 days later oh god that's a tough one
3:07:50
because there are parts of this movie that i really like but yeah just like i'll be yeah like it's funny to say yeah
3:07:56
like all the stuff the zombies just complete turn off and the whole
3:08:02
revenge spree at the end just it does nothing for me and i guess like
3:08:09
oh it's hard to say i guess i mean i mean i suppose like six
3:08:15
oh okay i mean i wouldn't say i mean i wouldn't say it's an average
3:08:21
movie i mean it is like it's a well-made movie it's just yeah
3:08:26
there's just too much of it but it's just not my thing
3:08:31
yeah i know i think you've stated your case pretty well i mean i i don't disagree with anything you've said more or less
3:08:37
so for me hmm the movie is is really well acted it's
3:08:43
masterfully shot i think the cinematography is beautiful it is paced fairly superbly it doesn't
3:08:49
ever really slow down too much even at the slower parts i mean that sounds weird to say but you know what i mean
3:08:55
like it doesn't drag yeah the soundtrack is amazing you know
3:09:00
which i already told you i love a good soundtrack oh yeah hopefully the hopeful message is great
3:09:07
such as it is the characters are reasonably well developed mostly warm lovable and
3:09:12
interesting i think yeah i mean
3:09:17
you know aside from the soldiers all the characters or part of the the group feel like
3:09:24
you know people they're not cartoon characters yeah
3:09:29
and juxtapositioned against that is the just the brutal violence and the terrifying monsters
3:09:36
and we even get to have man be the real enemy at the end which is always a plus in my book
3:09:41
yeah i mean look no look it's true but like you didn't have to say it
3:09:48
yeah i know uh i i rate this really highly uh hmm
3:09:55
i'm going back and forth between an eight out of ten or a nine hello i think just
3:10:02
it's it it gets a little marked off because it's a zombie movie and there's only so much you can do with that
3:10:08
you know with that combination of things yeah you know what heck with it i'm
3:10:14
gonna go with nine out of ten okay well i think it's it's masterful and
3:10:21
transformative maybe not maybe not perfect but uh
3:10:26
you know also danny boyle doesn't even say it's a zombie film so you know i don't know what the movie's trying to be
3:10:32
if it's not that what an infected film
3:10:37
so oh yeah i got the yeah once again i've checked out the
3:10:42
imdb keywords this movie has 208 plot keywords in total
3:10:48
all right i've chosen the top 20 and and now i shall read them out i don't i
3:10:55
think they i think they actually are listed by importance because i noticed that people list relevance so i think
3:11:02
that these top ones people list as the most relevant but i'm not certain
3:11:08
so anyway here's the top 20 virus
3:11:14
sure military london england
3:11:20
uh yeah definitely definitely zombie apocalypse
3:11:25
actually the uh director does not consider it to be a zombie movie so this one's wrong yeah
3:11:31
it's an infected film uh laboratory
3:11:36
oh yeah yeah it's start but at the start yeah and at the end of the weird alternate ending that doesn't really
3:11:42
exist thankfully yeah
3:11:47
survival definitely epidemic
3:11:54
that's more danny boyle's speed i think yeah zombie
3:12:00
do we have to go over this again well the next one is zombie survival i
3:12:05
feel like they're just repeating themselves now all right oh here's a good one rage
3:12:14
i mean yeah yeah big part of the movie being uh being
3:12:19
angry that might have been a good alternate title for the film just call it rage
3:12:26
yeah okay maybe jacob has his doubts
3:12:35
i was gonna say it would just feel like such a generic name i mean like 28 days later
3:12:41
at least like there's like something to that oh yeah i guess
3:12:46
i guess i just sort of like the shortness of it and you know sort of sums it up like yep that's what this is about but yeah you're right i suppose
3:12:53
it's more more creative and novel the way it is plus in the future it would end up being
3:12:59
confused with nicholas cage's uh 2014 revenge thriller which is also known as
3:13:06
tokarev okay i'm sorry i was i was going through
3:13:13
wikipedia this is what happens all right next one is coming out of a coma
3:13:22
