Gorman on Gore Ep13 Color Out of Space (2019)
Nicholas Cage and cosmic mind-bending horror go hand in hand like chocolate and peanut butter, and it tastes just as good. On this episode, Jacob and Peter explore the depths of Lovecraft for the first time on the podcast. We go scene by scene, spoiling as we go. We compare it to the original story. We marvel at Nick Cage’s acting. We debate the uselessness of fighting cosmic space gods. Is the story of the Color Out of Space meant to be a story about the working man’s plight in the face of unknowable catastrophe? Just how racist was Lovecraft? What is the best Lovecraftian horror film? All this, plus Tommy Chong, alpacas, and a witch on a white horse. What’s not to love here?
Trailer for next month's episode at 2 hours, 44 minutes, 19 seconds.

0:34
so i'm a few episodes into lovecraft country have you seen that yet jacob
uh
0:41
no i i heard it was real bad actually so i kind of avoided it
0:48
it's real heavy it's real heavy i haven't seen enough of it to have
0:53
a valid opinion i've only seen i think the first two episodes and it is
0:58
heavy i didn't realize how heavy it was gonna be
1:03
you know i thought it was oops hit the button again i'm sorry everybody
1:10
yeah that's what i get for trying to multitask i'm like reaching over like behind me trying to push buttons while i'm talking to you all right so i got it
1:17
i got it i thought that the show would be
1:22
a little bit about racism but it's
1:28
i don't know i think it might be the main storyline it's like it's almost more than anything else it's pretty
1:35
it's pretty nuts yeah that's that's the impression that i got that was it i mean like
1:43
light mostly focuses on that i i shouldn't say nuts you know what i mean well it's more like
1:49
it's hard to see how it can be um presented as entertainment you know
1:55
it's just like wow this is this is like some kind of uh some kind of a fear catharsis or
2:01
something you know like it's like watching something about the holocaust except that it's got some cthulhu
2:07
monsters in it yeah no we we get it peter you're a racist
2:14
i think that'll be the inevitable thing at the very end of all of this you know it'll be like you know brazil
2:20
or whatever you know like oh and i'm the secret son of hitler ha you all listen to me speak
2:29
for months and months now you can't un-hear me no i
2:39
don't we all yeah you know magneto did it we all do it you know you just gotta go sometimes
2:45
you gotta clear up some vague ambivalent backstory of yours
2:50
no need to go into details okay so here's the thing though
2:56
by addressing the racism in lovecraftian stories so
3:02
overtly in lovecraft country i feel like it is doing a service to the
3:08
genre i don't know that it makes the show that fun to watch
3:13
but it does sort of clean the slate in a way that is good
3:19
it's good in the long term because almost all those guys not just lovecraft but also some of his friends
3:25
were all a bit um xenophobic it was kind of i see i was about to say
3:32
it was kind of like the thing at the time but that sounds really awful um i mean
3:38
i guess it wasn't frowned upon at the time i guess you could put it that way at least not the way we do now or by
3:45
everybody but then again i i do hear accounts of people frowning on it at the time too so i don't know maybe it was
3:51
always that horrible and we just look at it differently now in a we have more consensus on the matter i
3:58
i mean lovecraft was like pretty racist even for the time
4:06
i mean there's like uh yeah there's that uh that great anecdote uh i can't remember
4:13
his his wife's name but he was uh uh sonia graham i got and i have the wiki
4:20
oh and i guess he was like he was doing so he was ranting about
4:25
uh the jews and he had to remind him honey you know i'm jewish right
4:34
did you forget again it's dear lord i know oh my god okay see
4:41
that's the thing i didn't want to start that way because i do or at least i used to really love lovecraft well i mean i love his writing
4:47
i love these stories and the concepts but it's hard to extricate that part
4:53
from his and that's what i think lovecraft country does so well i think that they do their best
5:00
to buy you know by just overtly just pointing it out and then asking us to
5:05
try to move on that maybe we can you know which isn't to say that you know it's not an important issue
5:12
to bring up but it's nice that they're trying to make it more palatable for future generations of people you know it
5:18
gives a context and uh you know and shows how we've chosen to interpret
5:24
the uh less savory parts of these people you know whose work we enjoy
5:29
yeah yeah no i i can i can see that i mean i guess like uh
5:36
you know like i as as a white guy i could always kind of just like brush it off as like that's just kind of like
5:44
yeah i mean people are pretty pretty [ __ ] racist back then so like
5:49
but like that could but but like like but like i could never be like negatively like affected by that you know the man
5:56
uh it's not the same way yeah vicariously well sure yeah although also like lovecraft was like that
6:04
funny sort of like he also hated different types of white people racist
6:10
uh yeah and asian people and just all kinds of people like almost everybody except himself and like other new
6:16
englanders yeah that's what i was saying is that like i don't like i i'm white but he also probably wouldn't have liked
6:22
me either probably not yeah well that's the thing i prefer to think of him in those terms
6:28
as more of just a broader xenophobe i think that his alienation wasn't just with
6:34
various minorities well it was but it was also everyone else he was alienated from everybody he was a weird little man
6:43
maybe maybe he was a normal sized man but he was a strange fellow yeah from start to finish
6:49
well actually i think i feel like that's kind of why he was
6:54
so singular as a weird fiction writer
7:00
because he was just riddled with all of these fears and neuroses that uh no
7:08
no normal person has and that's it gave him an interesting
7:14
perspective that like oh by the way everybody yeah by the way
7:20
uh welcome to gorman on gore i'm peter gorman the hosts i'd like to
7:25
like you all to give a big round of applause for my co-host jacob
7:34
i was i was i'm literally gonna i'm turning to to hit the sound board i realize i don't have the the applause up
7:40
so so no applause for you jacob i'm sorry uh you'll put them in post what are you talking about
7:45
computer applause right there they were oh i didn't put it all on the same board
7:51
i'm limited to i don't know eight or nine buttons and i filled them up with nicholas cage quotes
7:59
i'm sorry he takes priority jacob over adulation for for your co-hosting
8:06
skills i'm sorry yeah i had to make cuts
8:12
well it also could just be that i'm just not good with this this sound board it's got a little like interactive
8:18
screen and when it's recording it doesn't seem to want to let me do anything else so you know just take that up with road pro i guess
8:25
so yeah so for those who don't know anything about lovecraft or what the hell we're talking
8:31
about i just want to lay down a quick little summary of him i mean like this is the briefest a brief but you know
8:37
let's just get into it just so everyone's got oh god damn it sorry all right
8:44
that was an excellent ring i like that yeah it's very common
8:52
except for right now okay okay so lovecraft
8:57
he was a a strange fragile frightened man and we already we already went into this a little bit
9:03
he lived a stunted and short life he wrote weird stories of cosmic beings
9:10
he never made any money doing it he was only published in pulp science magazines in the 1920s and then he died of
9:16
intestinal cancer at the ripe old age of 46. so yeah i mean
9:22
he never knew that he was a success he let other people he was writing with
9:28
include some of his ideas and i think part of you know him doing that helped sort of
9:33
infect the concepts into the broader consciousness over time it seeped into
9:38
all kinds of different stories oh but i hear that it didn't really become big until like the 1970s
9:44
and from then on so he became a legend many many decades after his demise
9:51
he never got to enjoy any of it you know he he died penniless and sad as many great artists do
9:57
yeah and yeah as we were saying before he's a openly racist and uh you know it is reflected in his works and it makes it
10:04
hard to say that you like lovecraft because then people might read the wrong story and think that you're a creep
10:15
oh god okay uh i'm sure i've mentioned this before but
10:20
did you ever read medusa's coil no i have it's like a co-written one and
10:28
that one is okay so like okay
10:33
the racism in it is so very funny because
10:38
the it's sort of like a almost like a a romantic triangle which is weird
10:45
because like lovecraft's stories are also uh entirely yeah entirely sexless uh but he did yes
10:53
co-write this with a woman so awesome i guess i guess she added some of that and way to go for being in a
11:00
room with a woman for a while i mean he seems like a strange sexless being
11:05
like so removed from everything yeah it's like he's the survivor of a horror
11:10
film you know just the life that they would lead after a traumatic event that just destroys and distorts everything in
11:17
your life he's like that or at least he seemed to be i will say there is no evidence that they are actually
11:23
ever in their room together um but anyway maybe they sent letters back and forth
11:30
so they you know long story short there's this big like revelation of like oh the like you know
11:36
lady temptress or whatever is actually some kind of like horrible like gorgon monster and
11:42
it gets killed and whatever and then like the story kind of keeps going on a little bit and like the revelation at
11:49
the end is i think it's like a they find like a painting or whatever
11:54
and they like the main character like describes their their horror at the realization that the
12:03
woman that he had been like pining after or whatever was how did he say it like
12:09
a scion of zimbabwe oh so it's like
12:14
you know that's that's really awful but also like eloquently indirect i know but like it's so funny to me that
12:21
it's like there was a monster but also he was in love with a black chick
12:27
dear lord i remember reading that story about that guy who ended up being related to a
12:34
great white ape and i thought oh is this the racism they're talking about and then you know then you read other stories they're like no that's that's
12:41
not even the racist thing at all no i feel like i think i think the horror at red hook is
12:46
probably the most racist one like especially when you consider that
12:52
this like horrible slum of depravity and like
12:58
racial like intermixing is like like 1930s new york
13:05
yeah it's like like okay i feel like he took that alienation and
13:11
his lack of understanding as just i love that he was able to just paint it in the most cartoonishly
13:18
unnatural and twisted and evil and otherworldly you know that he possibly could
13:24
i will come to his defense a little bit in that it does seem like he lightens up
13:29
on that stuff in his later works it's really mostly i think it's from
13:34
just talking to other people you know we just sort of calmed him down yeah yeah
13:43
i feel like it tends to be the earlier stuff that tends to be the most embarrassing with that
13:50
yeah anyway i don't want to go into it too much you know i just want to point out that it's there
13:56
and i don't like it no yeah but as a kid i grew up with the stories uh i have in my possession a little paperback book
14:03
titled the great untold stories of fantasy and horror it was printed way back in 1969. i have
14:10
a first edition but it's a paperback so i don't think anyone cares the best story in the book it's all from
14:17
different authors you know it's one of those horror anthologies the best story is h.p lovecraft's the
14:22
dreams in the witch house and i read that disconnected from anything else he had written and i just absolutely love
14:29
that story i still do i think it's my favorite of all of his stories i think most people choose the rats and
14:34
the walls so you know if you want to choose a good story that's not embarrassing or
14:40
outmoded or whatever yeah start with the dreams in the witch house or the rats and the walls or my second favorite
14:46
story i guess is at the mountains of madness you can do that too any of those are good try one of those
14:53
you got a recommendation jacob like best lovecraft story or
14:59
well i don't know or a good one you know whatever um god
15:04
i kind of like pikmin's model i mean i feel like it's
15:09
oh it's one it's one of the more like you see it coming kind of which is like
15:15
that is also something like that that's not even a lovecraft flaw
15:21
but it's just like if you read like horror fiction at the time so much of it is like
15:28
the like talk about some like theoretical boy wouldn't it be horrible if there was like
15:35
a terrible monster that you couldn't see and could like suck your brain out
15:40
through your head thankfully you know this such a thing could never happen and then like over
15:46
the course of the story it's like and then that thing about the blood sucking or
15:52
like brain sucking invisible monster was true and it's like no shh
15:58
you know i mean like come on yeah like at the end of
16:04
i think it was no i was about to see at the mountains of madness but no it was it was one of the other stories but this
16:09
was that one where they were putting there was that one where they put the the brains and the canisters and like
16:15
time and space oh yeah yeah yeah yeah the whisperer and darkness yeah that's horrible that
16:22
yeah yeah it's like so much of it is uh legends tale of these awful bug monsters
16:27
uh but of course uh such a thing could possibly be true and then it's like there's this like long correspondence of
16:34
i think i've found evidence of some horrible bug monster and it's like yes
16:40
it's like at the at the end it's like i like the story but we we get it man
16:48
it's all set up yeah which it might not be everyone's cup of tea but because he kept doing so much setup it really laid
16:56
out a world i mean actually they use that term lovecraft country because he's got a whole
17:01
section of massachusetts and other places nearby that have fake cities and such where
17:07
terrible terrible things happen full of eldritch horrors and cosmic beings just
17:13
indifferent to the plight of man and to the sensibilities of good decent
17:19
white new englanders oh i shouldn't say that oh god it was his words all right it was
17:26
his words okay so all of this brings us dear audience to
17:33
today's film the 2019 film color out of space
17:40
oh you know i just realized i actually have the trailer let me just play it right now let's do that all right
17:47
look at this all those years in the big city we finally got out
17:53
we're living the dream maybe it is a dream
18:02
[Music] so
18:14
then everything just blew up big flash like a pink light or actually
18:20
i don't even know what color it was it wasn't like any color i'd ever seen before looks like a meteorite
18:30
i think it's radioactive i mean it's from space right meteorites are generally no more dangerous than ordinary rocks
18:39
how can something that pink just disappear did you plant those no
18:45
ward you come here for a sec oh god what are you doing
18:51
it's talking to me who's talking
18:59
[Music] it's in the static it's in the moisture
19:05
what's in here is out there and what's out there is in here now
19:12
everything's under control oh here are you so in denial that thing from the meteorite changes everything around
19:20
[Music] it it's just a color
19:27
just a color man can you believe me now i don't know what i believe anymore
19:33
[Applause] [Music]
19:44
the car the car
19:53
everything's gonna be a-okay
19:59
now dear lord i think i played that too loud and you can't even hear the music so jacob's just sitting there in silence
20:05
like is it is it over well i was gonna say you might have played it too loud because like i could
20:11
hear most of it oh well that's what i wanted you know i want us to share the experience you know
20:17
the audience you me everybody sure i want us to to just save her in the moment of this strange trailer with
20:24
tommy chong and nicholas cage and an annoying child who doesn't die soon enough
20:31
i don't want to give that away but yeah you know you hear him in the trailer you know he's talking to me in the wow
20:36
whatever kid i i don't know it's not the kid's fault but he is that kid you know the annoying
20:42
kid in the glasses who just witnesses everything and it's just kind of slack-jawed and doesn't do
20:48
anything and you know you know what you know that kid yeah he's in like dozens of movies
20:54
in one form or another yes he's like that jerry maguire kid you know in the glasses except this kid is
21:01
less cute no no offense to julian hillard i'm
21:06
sorry i'm sorry julian hilliard or however you say your name okay so this film is based off of the hp
21:13
lovecraft's short story of the same name you know the uh the color out of space although it has a u in the title you
21:19
know makes it fancy and kind of british-y to say it that way yeah
21:24
the color color out of space but then again lovecraft was writing in
21:31
like 1920 and so i don't know how much the english language has changed between then and now sometimes i wonder
21:37
if it was just optional or if he was just always weird you know even during his time like why'd you put a u in there
21:43
like don't worry it's a special color it's a color yeah yeah there's this concept in the
21:50
story about yeah about a color that it's like a color
21:56
that's never been seen before i mean we know now that the color spectrum doesn't work that way it's just
22:03
an array of things we can see so there's no special colors in my head i envisioned the color out of
22:09
space as being kind of a like a grayish tone but it's got a little bit of that slickness you know
22:15
that oil has when it's on water you know kind of like rainbowy like lightly
22:21
that's kind of the way i envisioned it in my head that's not quite how it's done here i think the movie wants to be
22:26
a little more obvious about it so anytime this cosmic thing or whatever
22:32
rears its head it's very bright and pink and you know magenta purples and pinks everywhere
22:38
yeah i mean we could wait till that uh until it shows up in the movie okay so yeah to summarize both in the
22:45
story and in in the movie a meteor lands then it crawls down a well
22:51
and then all the bad things happen yeah that's
22:57
that's about it i mean yeah that's the movie uh would you recommend this one to others jacob
23:03
or only to lovecraft fans uh i can see this appealing to people
23:09
who aren't lovecraft fans really like it ain't like it's like send it out to the normals
23:15
i think well i mean maybe not maybe not normals but i mean like i feel like there are other like
23:21
people out there who could uh get something out of this yeah i mean
23:27
it's clearly once you've seen these kinds of you know strange cosmic tales
23:32
weird tales anything based off of lovecraft they all have a somewhat similar vibe
23:37
which is both good and bad and so you know but you don't actually have to have seen or even known about any of that to
23:43
still appreciate the weirdness of these kinds of movies one thing that people are not going to
23:50
be prepared for though is the philosophy behind lovecraft you know a
23:55
lot of other writers they'll have a weird thing happen but in the end they're like
24:01
well we still like people so we're gonna have a happy ending that is
24:07
wait a minute is that ever the case in a lovecraft store almost never if you go see a weird thing in those
24:14
stories you almost always die or go mad or you're like sucked into another
24:20
dimension and you're never able to come back it's always something like that it just shows how low humans are on the totem
24:26
pole in the hierarchy of cosmic importance or whatever yeah or just scum on the bottoms of
24:33
shoes of gods or whatever yeah i mean there are some examples of
24:39
the protagonists living or like even confronting the evil and living i mean notably there was a couple yeah call of
24:46
cthulhu people forget but like the main character does survive meeting cthulhu
24:52
well he sees him from a distance and then he flees but yeah i mean that's something yes he didn't lose his mind or
24:58
whatever all right uh thing on the doorstep which has uh maybe
25:03
the most funny and abrupt solution to encountering
25:09
someone who is like tapped into these like fast and noble evils it's just like shooting the guy like six
25:16
times in the head sure just that word yeah yeah
25:24
so you would recommend this movie to the regulars to just well no no i mean not like the regulars
25:30
but i mean like i don't know i feel like if you can appreciate kind of i don't know slower burn horror and trippy
25:37
imagery i think you can get something out of it and you don't have to necessarily be
25:43
if you like mandy if you like nicholas cage and mandy if you like nicholas cage in general
25:50
yeah i mean it's all here i guess right the bright imagery the cinematography is
25:56
somewhat similar this movie is less insane which is saying something mandy is a very insane movie
26:02
one i would recommend by the way we'll probably cover that i just realized i've been editing so many of
26:07
these now i just realized every episode i think i promised like i had a dozen movies i i actually like promised myself
26:14
i wasn't going to do that in this episode because of that
26:19
yeah we have to stop no i i do i do love mandy yeah and i own it so eventually
26:25
well yeah we probably will cover it because it's great yeah actually i just recall i think on like the second
26:32
episode i was talking about how very soon i was gonna do this
26:37
cover like a this like foreign horror movie and we just we're
26:42
never doing it at this like at this point sorry i mean maybe never say never but probably not
26:49
yeah who knows yeah we could be doing this 30 years from now
26:56
and maybe we've covered hundreds of movies you know maybe we'll one day we'll have to go back and scrape the
27:01
barrel and just see what what our empty promises were years ago
27:07
oh that's a good idea let's do that yeah i mean we are like to be clear uh that does not count
27:14
um the tetsuo trilogy we are we are finishing that eventually oh god
27:20
don't invoke tetsuo's name that episode hasn't even come out yet that will be the next episode but yeah
27:28
that one is a doozy yeah oh boy and if you liked that you'll
27:34
also like that slow too body hammer the tetsuo wing oh
27:40
that's a terrible joke i'm sorry yeah that was bad can't defend that
27:45
okay i guess i would recommend this movie uh but only just i have some issues with it
27:52
but most of it stems from the way the original story chooses to end i don't want to give it away too much but you
27:58
know we've already discussed the uh you know the hierarchy of humans in the in the states of these stories so you
28:04
know it gives you a sense of how things will probably go that's usually how it goes
28:10
just kind of unfortunate jacob this is our first nicholas cage movie
28:17
yeah so okay on a one-to-five scale of nicholas cage-ness what degree of cage-ness is this film
28:25
um i would say four because you get a good combination
28:30
of nicolas cage playing a dad which is yeah he doesn't do it enough but it's
28:36
always entertaining when he does it and then he gets pretty nuts not the
28:41
most nuts so i think if you if you like if you like multiple aspects of nicolas
28:47
cage i think it does you get some uh good bits of both
28:53
i agree i'd say four out of five cages on this he is pretty cagey he gets to be
28:58
weird normal dad just obsessing about mundane stuff which is weirdly
29:04
fascinating uh yeah just listening to him talking about milking alpacas i could watch a whole movie of that even
29:10
like even if the monster never showed up i would watch a fake documentary about nicholas cage milking alpacas
29:19
it's weirdly mesmerizing and i don't know why you know here's the thing i mean i know it's kind of a joke to to
29:25
praise nicholas cage but there's just something about his his
29:31
it's it's bad acting right i mean isn't it but if it is it's it's compelling you know
29:37
it's like uh it's like a glorious dumpster fire you know what i mean like it's it's yeah it's great well
29:44
okay i guess what i would ask in reply to that is
29:50
peter what is bad acting
29:55
i don't know okay yeah that's like a what is art type question and i don't feel qualified to answer this
30:02
i feel like we're just waiting into yeah see we did racism earlier that was a mistake we shouldn't have talked about
30:07
that we we don't who the hell are we to talk about that and now it's yeah
30:13
frankly i'm gonna go into this marcel duchamp thing where like oh you signed your name on a toilet seat and now it's
30:19
art or whatever but well okay so that's
30:24
that's my defense is that you could ask that question of his
30:31
acting because there is something compelling to it yeah no i mean that's the thing
30:37
i don't know if you take the individual pieces of what he's doing it is bad but
30:43
something about the whole of it is just it's just kind of amazing so i
30:49
yeah so like in a lot of ways and i think you're you know even if you won't vocally agree i i think you are at least
30:56
helping me make a case that uh you know possibly of any actor out there
31:01
nicholas cages the uh the pinnacle
31:07
i do love nicholas cage i don't know i just don't i i get a little defensive about bandwagoning i suppose
31:14
yeah i just don't want to be like just blindly be like oh yeah i love him just like everybody else whatever
31:20
but yeah no he's he's so much fun i mean really he saves the movie well okay i
31:25
shouldn't say that the movie is not bad but yeah something about getting nicholas cage to do this role really makes the
31:32
movie i feel like it changed public opinion if you swapped out cage with any
31:37
other actor i bet people would have liked this considerably less sure yeah i mean and to be fair they're
31:45
you know there are other actors out there like that like i mean uh you know william defoe
31:51
uh i feel like any role if you were to like take him out of it uh the movie would be
31:57
would be lessened william defoe was awesome in the lighthouse you guys should listen to that episode and he was
32:04
perfect as the green goblin i recently watched that new spider-man
32:10
and i felt bad at first before i saw him because like oh no they're going to bring in the corpse of willem dafoe and
32:17
he's going to embarrass himself he's not bad it's going to be so bad he's way older than he was
32:23
what was it 20 30 years ago when they made the first spider-man with sam raimi i guess i don't remember how long long
32:29
ago that was it was a while and you know i mean like when i saw toby mcguire i felt sad for him i'm like oh you're too
32:35
old for this dude oh yeah actually the willem dafoe willem defoe was perfect i'm like wow
32:41
you are so good even now i want a whole like green goblin movie
32:47
this guy is amazing yeah he brings it in a big way so yeah i
32:52
guess i i recommend that movie i suppose i wasn't really thinking in those terms but yeah maybe just because william
32:58
defoe's in it you kind of bring up a good point not to like make this too much into like spider-man but like man
33:04
stop trying to make solo villain movies out of characters that can like you know like like morbius
33:11
or whatever do it like vampires i like morbius in the comics but i like
33:17
barbies because he's a vampire who shows up in spider-man
33:23
comics and that's yeah that's that's nuts i do have a spider-man comic where he
33:30
he's on the same boat as dracula which is pretty cool at one point he gets shoved by dracula i
33:36
think that's the only thing that happens no i mean it's sort of like this is all unrelated i'm sorry we shouldn't just
33:42
descend into comic book talk that's not the province no this podcast but basically what i'm saying is do like a
33:48
solo movie about like green goblins since like you have like an actual good actor attached to it and cancel
33:55
cancel doing craven the hunter or do a movie adaptation of like craven's
34:00
last hunt or something sure just have them show up as a side character yeah don't make him
34:07
anti-hero stupid okay yeah so anything else you want to
34:13
add before you dive into this movie jacob um
34:25
oh yeah no see i just wrote that down i didn't realize that that just came off as like a real passive aggressive insult
34:32
hey you want to just load more crap into this section of our podcast jacob yeah
34:37
your comic book nerdery yeah uh oh you know what uh
34:44
hold on i do have something watch lovecraft country everybody yeah it makes you really uncomfortable
34:52
uh fun fact lovecraft had a really weird mom
34:57
who uh dressed him as a a girl
35:03
and was uh something called like a like a touch me not who like basically just like she uh
35:10
she had intercourse for the sake of producing a child
35:15
and then just never touched her husband again yeah i heard both of his parents were
35:21
institutionalized and his grandfather died it's like he started with a nice life and then there was just like this
35:27
history of madness and loss yeah uh it really kind of echoes the the madness
35:33
and loss of his stories as well yeah i was going to say they just played in the soul yeah they just like
35:38
it actually like reads like a like a chapter of like the shunned house or something
35:44
yeah it's like the first chapter of any horror story it's just some weird parents and then they die or leave or
35:50
something yeah he used to beat me and he dressed me in a little navy outfit like donald duck
35:57
no pants no that's too far i'm sorry i'll take that back
36:06
all right anyway that's all i got without further ado yeah without further ado everybody i think all of you out
36:12
there need to gather yourselves get comfortable and prepare yourselves as we
36:17
dance to the thin flutes at the benign throne of azathoth
36:23
[ __ ] yeah he's [ __ ] dark
36:28
[Laughter] i didn't you know what full disclosure i didn't do enough research
36:35
on lovecraft but you know what i did read his stuff i've always loved his work and i know
36:41
the weird things i know all the god's names and all that crap peter you i might that might toss in a
36:48
little here and there yeah i mean uh we did uh we did play the call of cthulhu tabletop
36:55
role-playing game we didn't just play it i was in charge of those games that's right most of the time
37:00
yeah yeah no i love that crap but no i don't want you to bring up my nerdy past it's embarrassing
37:07
i'm one of those uh tabletop gamers that you know pretends he didn't do it you know i'm embarrassed about it so i i
37:13
don't want to tell people about the years of dnd and all that even though i'm saying right now but you know what i mean not in casual conversation to the
37:21
normals out there whatever i don't know who might be listening well okay also like i'm sorry
37:26
but like dungeons and dragons and call of cthulhu are like the most normal tabletop games
37:33
it's not like we're talking about i don't know playing like unknown armies or something
37:40
is this why i like lovecraft because maybe i feel some of that weird screwed up sense of like alienation and loss i grew
37:47
up thinking that i was gonna have to lie to people you know like i thought it was gonna be you know the bullying in
37:53
the 80s was very ronald reagan everyone had to be real manly if you're
37:59
a man and if you weren't you were persecuted mercilessly i thought that was gonna go on for my
38:05
whole life i thought i was gonna have to just deal with that and somehow maybe because of bill gates
38:12
taking over the earth suddenly nerds are cool and everyone has to it's like we
38:17
became the tyrant so now everyone has to listen to our nonsense you know yeah okay i don't know what to do with myself
38:23
anymore you know what i mean i i i yeah i mean first of all don't don't bring up the fact that like as
38:30
us like [ __ ] dorks have such a stranglehold on pop culture i'm not a big fan of it either we do we absolutely
38:36
do jake it's like it's yeah we talk about comic books and even like you know the people who don't know
38:43
jack [ __ ] about any of that like you they don't know nothing they still know what we're talking about
38:48
because they voiced it our our boyish interests onto everyone oh yeah no they have to know
38:54
uh everyone must know they must appreciate oh god i'm glad we didn't force he-man
39:01
on people yet because what a terrible franchise i loved it as a kid though dude they just made like two different
39:06
he-man cartoons for netflix what are you talking about that's right you know what i can't even say it about anything yeah
39:12
what about rainbow brice or like i don't know pippi longstocking or uh punky brewster all of those like girly
39:18
ones uh no that survives well i mean yeah i guess if you we want to go into it yeah
39:25
the the girly nerd [ __ ] did not see the same level of success
39:31
i just have to point out for shame america and i guess also the world whatever
39:38
we should have been equal opportunity the whole way through i mean we yeah i wouldn't have watched it but you
39:44
know yeah i mean we need a live action american sailor moon movie
39:49
uh man are there women hot enough on earth to do that movie okay is that a weird
39:55
thing to say i don't know yeah i mean i was gonna point out that they're all like 13
40:02
i think they're supposed to be yeah even though they're they're drawn like 30 year old women or something yeah i mean
40:07
that's make the elder sign we'll move on
40:14
all right all right fine talking about this more can only i can't guarantee i won't talk about sailor moon
40:20
again though well okay i'm just saying that like with the way the conversation was heading
40:26
yeah detour let's get off of this road
40:31
so okay so the movie yeah we're starting guys buckle in the movie comes in on a bit of a
40:38
narrated text that's been plucked right out of the opening paragraph of the lovecraft story
40:43
yeah i doubt you haven't memorized or do you that'd be weird uh
40:49
west of arkham there's [ __ ] i know bits and pieces wow you
40:54
actually got like you got the first three words that's something i actually have it written down okay so
41:00
i don't know why i dangled you with that when i just have it sitting right here yeah actually [ __ ] just read it
41:07
i heard that you just did you listened to the audiobook just recently or did you read it yeah yeah yeah i i listened
41:13
to the audiobook okay so here we go and i quote
41:18
west of arkham the hills rise wild and there are valleys with deep woods that
41:23
no axe has ever cut there are dark narrow glands where the trees slope fantastically and where thin
41:30
brooklets trickle without ever having caught the glint of sunlight
41:36
it sounds like good writing because it's because it actually is good writing it's lovecraft and then right after that it
41:41
starts going into what the actual script is and you're like oh that's that's not as good okay
41:47
oh i i would also like to briefly plug something if you guys are
41:53
you're new to lovecraft and you're right but you're like uh you know reading especially reading old
41:59
stuff that kind of sucks they're already sucks yeah there are a lot of good audio
42:04
adaptations of uh lovecraft's work there are dramatic ones like the atlanta radio
42:11
theater production i think that's what they're called they do like uh sort of like dramatic readings they're they're
42:17
like one for one to one with the stories uh but they're pretty good and then some of you might know uh
42:24
a guy named wayne june who uh voiced the uh narrator character in the darkest
42:32
dungeons games he's the one who talks about sandy knowing that
42:37
the edges of your mind that guy he's done a few recordings they're all
42:43
great because that guy has a great voice yeah i mean we can't really do justice
42:49
to just the length and breadth of people's love for this crap it's in everything if you dig around in a lot of
42:56
these little in books and movies uh songs i was listening to neil cece rega the other
43:02
day you know he he does a bunch of like joke tracks you know he did that ghostbusters song bustin which i recommend to anyone it's
43:08
just like it's a great song even just on its own merits it's just like a remix of the ghostbusters theme i don't remember
43:14
that one he did an album under the band named lemon demon and
43:20
some of the tracks on there are amazing when he dies you should listen to that song it's great it's it's very love crafty and
43:27
it's just about how all this weird stuff that they find on the dead body of some kind of great occult leader after he
43:32
died so yeah and that's just one random thing you know it's all over the place yeah hidden
43:40
in the cracks yeah i guess it would actually be a little bit of consciousness at this point if like
43:46
someone sought out a horror podcast listened to this episode and was like
43:51
not at least somewhat initiated everyone has to start somewhere and so you know i'm not gonna
43:57
you know whatever no i'm just saying and you should odds it's unlikely
44:02
yeah what if they did though wouldn't that be great if we were the people who got someone onto it they're just like i had
44:08
no idea yeah oh my god probably prefer it if it was
44:14
someone who you know knew their lovecraft [ __ ] better
44:19
back to the movie we come in on a young woman in a cape trying to do a bit of witchery by the
44:25
side of the river she has like a great white horse that she rode in on and i just i don't know
44:31
something about that feels so strange to me i don't know why the horse is in the movie i love it it's a great big white
44:38
horse and it doesn't do anything i mean later on it does one thing and it's hilarious
44:44
but that's it you know so i don't know why it's here this beginning reminds me of the very
44:50
beginning of labyrinth you know where like jennifer connolly is doing some cosplay out in a park reciting a play
44:56
that doesn't exist oh yeah except that this is for realsies alright this is a girl named lavinia
45:03
gardner and she is some kind of a witch i think she's wiccan or something and she's
45:10
calling on the what was that word she used uh the principalities of like i don't know all the great
45:17
elements fire water and whoever to keep cancer away from her mom which is cool i like this scene because
45:24
it sets up that she's both weird but also nice she's using her witchery for good
45:31
yeah it's interesting this movie does a lot of this sort of thing where they do nice
45:36
little setup scenes that make you just feel worse later uh
45:41
you shouldn't give away what happens but yeah well okay yeah not everyone makes it out folks
45:48
if you fall in love too much with any of these characters just watch out you know just watch yourself
45:54
oh so this is a fun little bit of trivia lavinia do you know what that name is uh
46:01
a reference to no i see i love that name and i was thinking that if i have ever had a
46:06
daughter with someone who was i don't know like the female equivalent of edgar allan poe i would name her
46:13
lavinia that's very specific but uh
46:18
yeah well i was thinking if someone would have to be weird enough it would have to be a real like a wednesday adams
46:24
type of a lady to put up with a name like lavinia i think yeah like what
46:30
so yeah what's it from oh uh it's from the dunwich horror lavinia weightly the
46:37
uh daughter of oh the weightlies yeah wait was she one of the deformed
46:44
children of a monster or something she was the girl with albinism
46:50
who goes up on the hill with her father and comes down all pregnant with
46:56
yog-sothoth uh spawn god i i hope it was yog-sothoth
47:02
jesus christ uh yeah no well oh yeah it is i mean i mean like spoilers
47:07
i mean any other scenario where your dad leads you up into the hills and you come back pregnant hey all right all right let's let's just keep going let's just
47:14
move it along see i don't think it would have even
47:19
occurred to lovecraft to think of something like that because like i said he was or like we said he was kind of a
47:24
sexless being he didn't think in those terms no i know like i was i i thought about that
47:31
because i i've been reading other like lovecraft stuff like the was like the thing on the doorstep
47:37
where they have like some like body switching that involves like a like a little man switching into the
47:44
body of a much younger woman and i'm like yeah there are a lot of like
47:49
bad implications here but he clearly did not think of any of that stuff
47:55
he's really rather androgynous as a writer which you know some people find kind of soothing like i mean he's he's
48:00
real i don't know what do you call it he's real confrontational about
48:05
the races and cultures he doesn't like but yeah but when it comes to gender politics i mean uh
48:11
he's fairly neutral mostly i guess yeah in as much as i think lavinia is
48:18
maybe one of like three named women in all of his stories yeah you know what
48:24
yeah on reflection i think that that yeah okay yeah i was just thinking back to some stories with women and no yeah
48:31
you know what never mind yeah no i like rescinded that sounds like an exaggeration but
48:37
there are almost no women in his stories ever
48:43
it's like the you know the the complaint people used to make against tolkien except real you know tolkien actually
48:49
had some women and they were kind of cool in his stories yeah not so much with lovecraft yeah
48:56
so this lady her name is well in the movie she's lavinia but her name is madeline arthur
49:02
the actress she's in her mid-20s but you know when this was filmed she was i don't know 23 or something
49:09
but she looks 15. i guess that's probably on purpose they wanted to look youngish but i don't know
49:15
i feel like you're never going to be allowed to find her cute she'll look the same way her whole life probably
49:22
okay you're [Music] you're on that on that borderline again with the
49:27
am i drifting [Laughter] you know what she's like she's like the
49:34
women in uh to catch a predator where they get like an older woman jesus christ like
49:40
to lure in dudes who are creeps like hey come in have some sweet tea
49:45
yeah um i mean i guess that's not what i would bring up when talking about
49:51
how cute she is hey i didn't say i did
49:56
i will say though full disclosure everyone i do have a soft spot for witches i am thoroughly
50:01
pro-which in disposition the conjuring lost points with me just
50:06
for having an evil witch as the antagonist real women died throughout the ages they were the real ones were midwives they
50:13
were herbalists they were loners oddballs and like mystic pagan spiritualists
50:20
freethinkers yeah i'm a fan of underdogs and weirdos and
50:26
outcasts and so i hate seeing women well witches well women and witches
50:32
being persecuted in movies i don't like it and so i was shocked in this movie i guess let's reveal now that no one is on
50:39
her case about her weird pagan ways it's pretty cool if you have some kind of uh what do you
50:45
call it a trigger warning about the persecution of the occult uh you get off scot-free
50:51
on this one yeah i mean uh thank you for agreeing with me jacob well i i wouldn't be i was
50:58
thinking back to it and like oh yeah i don't even think the the brother might make a joke about it i
51:03
don't think they even address it yeah i don't know yeah the brother makes fun of her i guess
51:08
that sort of counts as some ribbing i suppose yeah
51:13
so anyway she's burning her hair she's wishing cancer away from her mom and then ward phillips shows up he's a
51:20
surveyor for a hydroelectric company he calls himself a hydrologist i assume
51:25
that's a job yeah i wanna he wanders by and interrupts her i
51:30
wondered when i first saw this whether that has some kind of significance that like you know her mom would actually get cancer later because she wasn't able to
51:37
finish her little like witchy ritual to stop it she'd been actively keeping it away this
51:42
whole time that's almost counter lovecraftian just because that would imply that the like
51:49
uh feeble human witchery could like possibly have like an actual
51:54
effect on the greater forces that be yeah i guess that's true yeah because
52:00
that's sort of how this goes i mean you know to get into any of that yet but yeah it
52:05
really doesn't work out i mean she does her best so yeah the witch lady
52:11
lavinia she talks to a hydrologist that makes him play small talk he expresses
52:16
an interest in her witchcraft and i can't believe he thinks that her ritual was alexandrian it's clearly wiccan you
52:23
know he's given a choice between the two you know it's like oh i don't know if it was the one or the other and she's like alright which one do you think it was
52:29
and he's like oh it's alexandrian yes no a real bonehead in this scene
52:38
how embarrassing i know she bids him goodbye and rides her horse
52:43
back to her fairly palatial country home it is a really big house
52:48
i you don't know i was about to say we don't know what state it is no we do know what state it is it's massachusetts
52:54
it's fictional lovecraft massachusetts but i mean i wonder how out in the sticks they have to be to be able to afford a
53:01
house that big you know it looks like a million dollar house or maybe more yeah i was gonna say uh while watching the
53:06
movie for the first time i was taking it out of it for a minute just like imagining the like
53:13
the financial situation that would allow this yeah like you know especially with with
53:19
like the dad being just kind of like an alpaca farmer i'm like man he's a failure yeah and then like
53:26
but like nicholas cage is an unsuccessful businessman of some kind but you know what to their credit they
53:31
do actually give you a reason why they're able to afford that house yeah
53:37
and it's all about the wife or at least i assume oh yeah 100
53:43
yeah and speaking of the of the dad out on the front porch in a rocking chair
53:48
nicolas cage pretends to be a regular human being even just him sitting in a rocking chair
53:54
it's just he's so strange you know it's just i feel like as soon as he starts
54:00
pretending to be a regular person it's like he can't do it and so he's just like shifting and looking weird you know
54:07
i like it it's a fun performance here he plays nathan gardner a scatter
54:13
brained dad and as we've mentioned before a failure of business i feel like he's hiding here
54:20
i don't know what his job was before but i bet he wasn't good at it and so he just sort of gave up and wanted to go
54:26
play around with stuff out in the woods yeah that does there's some dialogue in the movie to that effect
54:34
their barn is full of alpacas it's just chock full of alpacas an
54:39
uncomfortable amount of alpacas they go look in there i forget why i think benny is supposed to be in there
54:45
the it's the eldest son of the family there's two sons and benny is
54:50
a bit of a pothead so he wanders out and he's like hiding to smoke dope but they
54:56
mentioned that i think the dad and mom know he does it so it doesn't seem like it matters maybe maybe the thing is is
55:02
he can't do it in front of them you know he has to do it like quietly hidden somewhere yeah
55:09
oh yeah and out by the idyllic well that's just in front of their house his youngest son jack
55:15
he's just sort of staring blankly down into the water you know so you know this kid is a winner right off the bat
55:21
yeah shoot i forget is that when they go check in on the barn is that when they mention ezra
55:28
living on their property yes that's the first time they mentioned ezra you know tommy chong
55:34
apparently sold him the dope so yeah yeah when i first
55:40
watched the scene i thought back to uh do you remember that movie on mystery science theater the screaming skull yeah
55:48
i actually kind of like that movie i yeah actually okay on ironically yeah i
55:53
kind of like it too it's one of those movies where a woman wanders around an old mansion at night and nothing happens and
56:00
somehow it's still kind of great i mean it will drive a lot of people crazy though so i mean there's there's reasons
56:06
why a bunch of robots made fun of it yes so watch it however you like if you
56:11
if you feel so inclined yeah but i like immediately first time watching it i
56:16
immediately thought to that character mickey who's like just that kind of slow guy that lives on their property
56:23
it's like you know oh i forgot yeah yeah it was like oh my god they have a mickey
56:30
yeah i feel like almost every country house needs a weird kind of slow local guy
56:37
who will know things or or get things for you yeah like a groundskeeper or a janitor or
56:43
something a landscaper maybe god that'd be so cold a lawnmower man yeah
56:50
what a life yeah subsisting parasitically off of some wealthy family
56:55
from out of town or whatever i mean honestly
57:01
kind of a sweet gig i wonder if like they ever came home you
57:06
know and like well we haven't gone to his character yet but you know like tommy chong is in their house like drinking their sodas or
57:11
something oh hey man the door was unlocked uh you know what
57:18
i'm gonna oh what a character you know uh i'll say this we only have a few scenes with them but
57:24
you know what i don't think you'd do that i think he seems like a like you know what he's a slightly more responsible
57:30
kook yeah maybe i'm being too hard on him no i i think he seems like a fairly respectful guy
57:37
he's the kind of guy that you want living on the edge of your property
57:43
sure he knows stuff yeah and he can just manifest pot out of nothing
57:48
i didn't see a grow operation yeah yeah i was gonna say okay so this little kid staring into the
57:55
well he's i don't know he's got overly large spectacles over a weirdly vacant
58:00
face you know the kid he's done so many things he's like that kind of kid
58:07
he'll just stare blankly at you and it just kind of drives you nuts yo that's right he's like that kid from
58:12
home alone with the glasses fuller you know who wets the bed he's like that kid
58:18
i remember that uh there's that part when they get up and the chair like squishes into his face
58:24
that's kind of remember oh yeah okay that kid yeah
58:30
any of this it only makes sense to people who've seen home alone so i'm sorry for the rest of you go watch that
58:36
it's a classic don't watch the remake whenever that comes out there's supposed to be like a british
58:41
version that's getting made i don't know why well it's so they can make a remake and not have the question immediately be why
58:47
don't the bandits just shoot the kid it makes more sense in a disarmed
58:53
country with a lawless rule it's like mad max over there
59:02
all right all right so jolie richardson plays theresa gardner
59:07
she's the mom mostly i remember her from i don't know if you want to bring it up one of our
59:12
favorite movies the sci-fi classic event horizon oh yeah i didn't did not remember that
59:20
yeah she's the well i don't want to say she's the blonde lady but yeah she's she's one of the ones that that survives
59:27
in that movie you know spoiler for that film but almost everyone dies that's a great one
59:32
a lot of people will list event horizon on the list of lovecraftian films even though it's not strictly one of them and
59:39
it's not based off of any of his works but it has a similar sense of that mix of the
59:44
of science and the occult and the fact that they have to go through hell to travel through time or
59:50
space or whatever yeah pretty cool i think it's for call it lovecraft to jason
59:55
sure i'd say it's probably it's probably in the the ballpark at least yeah
1:00:02
here she plays some kind of a day trader she's up in the attic teleconferencing apparently like all of the time
1:00:09
she's late for dinner because of it yeah how do they get this woman to agree to
1:00:15
this situation she is working on the kind of job where you have to talk to people all the time and she's doing
1:00:22
trades and short selling and really dangerous stuff that you have to fix
1:00:28
constantly you have to adjust so that you don't lose an enormous amount of money and so if she ever loses her
1:00:34
internet connection and her her country home that's rather remote from everything she's boned
1:00:40
and you know spoiler alert that's kind of what happens she's like just briefly delayed by a couple of things including
1:00:46
being hospitalized and she's mad about it she's like i can't believe i had to take
1:00:52
time out of my day from day trading to do this thing as if like her whole
1:00:58
career is so precarious that she can't take a day off how did nick cage get her to go to the
1:01:04
country they should be living in a city somewhere where she could just walk down a street use an internet cafe if she
1:01:10
needs to or something yeah i mean what can i say he uh he just
1:01:16
lays pipe flat well dear lord all right
1:01:22
no i don't know i i like it no i i i yeah that was something that was weird
1:01:28
because i feel it i don't think their relationship is supposed to be that way but it does feel like he's kind of taking advantage of
1:01:34
her because his life is only possible because she does that absolutely yeah he's like the mascot to
1:01:40
her life like i feel like she's propping up everything yeah maybe that's why he's able to put up with her
1:01:47
kind of frostiness i mean part of it's justified we'll get into it i mean you know she's a recent cancer
1:01:52
survivor she feels wounded about it yeah and you know they haven't been uh intimate in a while and they mention it
1:01:58
more than once which is weird like i don't feel like the movie needed to do that but you know whatever i guess
1:02:06
at dinner daughter lavinia mocks her dad for buying all those alpacas in the barn
1:02:11
he's like why how did you do that dad you know and nick cage is just like they're the animal of the future
1:02:17
remember well are they i don't know i don't think so you know i did look it up at one point
1:02:24
because they mentioned how healthy alpaca meat is and yeah i
1:02:30
don't know if it's the most healthy red meat out there but
1:02:35
apparently it's actually up there so like that at first that part's true
1:02:41
that being said yeah yeah i would feel bad eating alpaca just because
1:02:47
they are very cute yeah and i guess like i've been like culturally conditioned to like i mean
1:02:53
like cows are cute too you know or at least it can be but i've been like
1:02:58
culturally conditioned to uh see those things as uh milk and meat so
1:03:05
sure i often get llamas and alpacas mixed up i believe llamas are the pack animals
1:03:12
and alpacas are raised for their wool and i guess to a lesser extent their meat yeah and yeah i looked it up a
1:03:18
little bit i guess their meat is high in protein and low and fat and it's fairly
1:03:23
tender on its own so i mean i guess he's right but
1:03:29
the movie treats it like he's made a mistake here oh and also the family treats it like he's made a mistake here
1:03:35
you know they they kind of side-eye each other they're just like why did you buy those dad i mean that is kind of weird
1:03:42
oh yeah it definitely was a mistake uh oh you know what listen i didn't i don't
1:03:48
know why this didn't click with me sooner it was never gonna happen but uh we did have an opportunity to purchase
1:03:56
some alpacas at one point oh really yeah why well i mean because they were for sale
1:04:03
i don't know i don't know but uh i mean it just wouldn't have been
1:04:09
feasible to like have alpacas in uh san francisco
1:04:14
yeah i hear alpaca wool is uh is very it's very good you know like you can make sweaters out of it and stuff yeah
1:04:21
it's supposed to be really good at insulating plus again they're just very cute animals that would be fun to have around
1:04:28
sure i don't like the noises they make i didn't know that until i watched this movie because you do hear them kind of
1:04:34
they sort of grunt it's like a weird noise i don't i don't like it i like they are very cute looking i like
1:04:40
it because it reminds me of blues uh the tauntauns from uh empire strikes back
1:04:46
yeah it is kind of like that all right
1:04:51
yeah would you eat alpaca meat jacob if presented to you uh you know i'd try it
1:05:00
i guess i might i'm weird about new meats maybe i should expand my horizons and
1:05:06
just eat some weird ones oh see i actually like i love trying that stuff out like i haven't
1:05:11
i i'm sure i've mentioned it i uh i live fairly close by the chinese grocery store
1:05:18
so i i can like go up there and be like i can get like a bag full of like you
1:05:23
know chicken feet or whatever uh i had uh sure yeah i got like uh one time i i got like
1:05:31
12 chicken hearts for like a dollar fifty nice it was nuts you ever just
1:05:36
grab like an anonymous brown lump and just put it in your bag like that might be good well i mean that's kind of what
1:05:42
i did is i saw there were there's like a section for like more
1:05:47
organy stuff and i was like you know let's let's check out what they have chicken hurts why not i'll try it
1:05:54
out sure why not go nuts they're probably really tough though right how'd you prepare them did you
1:06:00
have to like mash them up no no i uh i actually just threw them in the airfryer
1:06:06
well after raw well no i yeah i mean i like marinated them and then had a heart and uh onions i guess like liver
1:06:13
and onions sure uh that seems like an organ thing you just have it with onions yeah
1:06:19
they're not bad i guess like for me personally it really i mean i know this is like a
1:06:26
no [ __ ] thing it really feels like you're eating a heart
1:06:33
yeah i think that's part of it for me for new textures and meats and like organs and stuff yeah i don't want that
1:06:40
feeling like i don't want to remind be reminded that it's a dead animal you know like halfway through and just be
1:06:45
like yeah because i mean it's like it is like
1:06:51
like even though like a chicken's heart is small it is still like a is a powerful muscle and you feel it
1:06:57
it's not something like like stomach is like pretty easy to ignore because i don't know i guess for
1:07:03
whatever reason there's less of a like you're less aware of your stomach you know what i mean
1:07:08
sure at least i am as far as like it's like makeup or whatever it's just gonna yeah
1:07:14
it's just kind of like you put in your belly whereas like a heart is like you know what it is so when you bite
1:07:20
into it it's like yeah yeah okay so
1:07:26
oh yeah i'm sorry nathan gardner has a really impressive wine cellar i don't know if you noticed
1:07:33
he's got hundreds of wine bottles down there yeah yeah i i didn't notice that
1:07:39
although i noticed the uh i i don't know i guess like i don't know since i don't have a wine cellar it seemed like he had a lot of
1:07:45
the same wine which i feel like well it's hard to tell but yeah it could have been
1:07:51
it didn't look that different yeah which i don't know yeah i feel like wouldn't you like if you're gonna have like a
1:07:57
wine cellar wouldn't the thing be to have a whole bunch of different like varieties you know man
1:08:03
i don't know yeah maybe or maybe he bought a bunch from some local guy we're just like i'll just buy half of what you
1:08:08
got well yeah that's a thing it's like it's like the difference between like
1:08:13
being like into wine and being into wine
1:08:19
yeah if it's his idea i bet it's mostly the same wine if it's his wife's idea i bet it's like
1:08:25
all the best wines yeah she just seems considerably more rational and intelligent
1:08:31
she's a bit remote but you know everyone's different i suppose i think in this relationship nicholas
1:08:38
cage is the silly one yeah speaking of which i actually pulled the quote from the end of the dinner
1:08:44
where he tells the children that they they have to do the dishes so here we go
1:08:55
time for you to do the dishes no jack jack yeah
1:09:09
i love that the kid you know jack has to way over pronounce her name because it's hard to say so no it's lavinius
1:09:17
[Laughter] but yeah that's the level of nicholas
1:09:22
cage-ness in this film he really lays it on thick even before he starts going a little funny you know
1:09:29
as begins to happen later in the movie even just as a regular man he is very strange
1:09:34
yeah it seems like he'd be a good dad though or at least initially he seems like a good time yeah yeah i mean he seems like
1:09:42
he's uh interested in what his kids are doing after dinner nathan and teresa stand out
1:09:49
on the porch and reflect on their lives a little bit i like these little character building scenes and you need to savor them because we
1:09:55
don't get a lot of those here yeah nathan lives under the shadow of
1:10:01
the ghost of his disapproving father who used to own the farm yeah i mean who does it
1:10:07
yeah really but i love that he mentions that he never thought he would go there and he
1:10:13
he hated his dad and he's he seems glad that he's dead and who isn't he had to like remake oh
1:10:20
okay i'm kidding my dad's my dad's laughing we have a good relationship hey dad
1:10:26
you might you might listen to this one like all right
1:10:32
yeah but no he he's got a weird relationship with his dead dad but now he's stuck on his property i think for
1:10:38
me that's the thing that really hammers home that i feel like he's failed at something because it feels like he had
1:10:45
to retreat to this farm because if i feel like if things were going better he would have sold the farm and he would
1:10:50
have started a whole new life somewhere but you know maybe it was just easier for him to just get this place because
1:10:56
he already had it and just dress it up and start some silly projects raising
1:11:01
alpacas each of them reveals their thing so you know nathan talks about his dad and then
1:11:08
theresa his wife she talks about her struggle with her self-image after she had she's gotten a
1:11:14
what do you call it a mastectomy yeah a de-boobing i guess jesus yeah
1:11:21
she only recently recovered from it and that's why they keep bringing up that they haven't been intimate in six months
1:11:26
this is the first time they bring it up you know just to one another yeah and then they bring it up again later that's the weird thing
1:11:32
i mean wait doesn't he mention on the news too yeah we'll get there
1:11:40
they both have their things but you know what everybody they still love each other and that's all that matters
1:11:46
in this cold cruel lovecraftian world so then everyone goes to bed
1:11:53
and then a big pink meteor comes down nearby you know i mean i want to gloss over it too much but it's pretty abrupt
1:12:00
yeah you kind of see what everyone's doing before they go to bed or as they're about to go to
1:12:06
bed lavinia falls asleep amongst a bunch of dishes
1:12:11
it's just like a raid around her on her bed it seems like a little kid thing to me i guess some people you know might do that
1:12:17
you know maybe their whole lives but i i don't know i can't imagine i would be so uncomfortable with a like a dish on my
1:12:24
bed because i move around too much so i know i'm going to knock it over and break it yes
1:12:30
you have to be a real slob to have dishes just land there on your bed
1:12:35
sure filthy witch with her just dishes just willy-nilly
1:12:41
that's what this movie's about i mean it'll be yeah so yeah she anyway so yeah she falls asleep amongst
1:12:48
her own mess i guess you know as far as messes go it's not that bad yeah her brother benny i don't know
1:12:55
what's wrong with him i think he's supposed to be stoned they show him drooling and playing some kind of a
1:13:01
space video game it almost looked like stellaris or something like that i was gonna say like uh yeah yeah
1:13:09
totally can't relate to uh zoning out being just still near your mind playing
1:13:14
stellaris yeah it's the common experience in the
1:13:20
disaffected young man's life i guess yeah
1:13:26
he's doing that and he's so out of his gourd that he doesn't see the giant flaming like pink
1:13:32
comet or whatever it is just hurtling out of the skies and just lighting everything up like bright pink
1:13:39
that's like my favorite part they show everyone reacting and he's just like staring blankly at his screen the whole
1:13:44
way through yeah see that's unrealistic because if anything you know were to like
1:13:50
interrupt you while playing stellaris you'd just be pissed at it sure
1:13:56
only jack jack is really paying attention you know he's up and he's being weirded out by the fact
1:14:02
that the pterodactyl it's like a little stuffed pterodactyl toy up on his ceiling is wobbling around
1:14:07
i guess from the activity of the approaching meteor oh yeah that's right and this is the
1:14:13
first time that nathan and teresa are gonna get busy and they have like a nice little
1:14:19
talk with each other and he calls her his golden lady and it's very sweet i suppose
1:14:24
uh i and then naturally it's all just interrupted well yeah i mean i
1:14:30
personally like to think that the uh the meteor was drawn to the house because they were uh
1:14:37
having sex that is such a weird convention in movies
1:14:43
there are so many movies where something bad is happening while someone is having sex i could be wrong about this but i
1:14:50
feel like this happens more in movies that are that have a female as the main character and there's like this weird
1:14:55
messed up implication that if you ever enjoy yourself in that way
1:15:01
that you ruin the whole world you can't for a moment you know be allowed to have a
1:15:06
moment of happiness if you do a comment will come out of the sky
1:15:11
i can believe that but like offhand like what what like what what's a movie that does
1:15:17
that that you can think of in the show stranger things there's that scene
1:15:23
where the i don't know the oldest daughter or maybe this is the only one daughter anyway that character she has like the
1:15:30
friends that's like a redhead it's kind of the velma of their friendship and she's like getting killed out in a pool
1:15:36
and they keep going back and forth between the girl like having this blissful like you know first time
1:15:41
experience and then going to her best friend getting killed by like the upside down monster or whatever it was well
1:15:49
yeah i guess i wouldn't have known that one because i uh i only watched good television
1:15:54
i don't know if it is or i don't i don't think i finished it but yeah anyway you know the first season's not bad i mean
1:16:00
there's a reason why it's famous sort of and yeah i can't think of much more my
1:16:06
mind immediately went back to one of the more remote warlock movies so that's not a good example but you know
1:16:13
yeah okay like when he's drafting having to like cite warlock that uh
1:16:18
that might be yeah well it's like it's like warlock five or something yeah it was good yeah it was gonna say
1:16:24
look it up but it definitely wasn't the first two because no no
1:16:30
it's gonna look up no that's not it dang it to see warlock films i'm going to cut
1:16:35
part of this out as i was going to say it
1:16:40
peter well you're doing that yeah lavinia has copy of the necronomicon on
1:16:47
her desk absolutely she does yeah yeah i assume it's the d edition which is one of the
1:16:52
explorated uh english translations of the necronomicon it's a fictional book we'll talk about
1:16:58
it later i actually wrote a little bit about it what was it uh goldman goblin
1:17:04
that's like the uh the publisher that like that i always thought that was a really funny element of the uh
1:17:10
the role-playing game is like there's just this publisher who keeps like publishing
1:17:16
books with like real magical power but like yes censors them and like edits
1:17:22
them just enough that they like seemingly completely unwittingly preventing this like dangerous knowledge
1:17:29
from like actually being used for nefarious ends
1:17:34
yeah there's an implication that capitalism blunts the the edge of occult evil
1:17:41
i guess yeah you know like by taking out the naughty bits and the parts that are too weird or don't make sense you're
1:17:47
taking out all of the magical glory of the original text and it somehow waters it down so you can actually read it
1:17:54
without losing your mind or or opening a portal to another dimension or something
1:17:59
okay so it's warlock three the end of innocence and yeah that's that that's that's one's a little more indirect but
1:18:05
you know it's about a woman and and like all of her friends in a house and they all betray her one by one that always
1:18:11
struck me as a very female feeling movie because it's very much from her perspective and how important each of
1:18:18
those betrayals is to her you know what i mean i don't know it feels a little weird because we get that a lot from male
1:18:24
perspectives and we're kind of used to it but like whenever it happens to a you know a woman it seems
1:18:29
more out of place maybe just because it doesn't happen as often like from their perspective i don't know is that a weird thing to
1:18:35
say maybe it is no i i i get what you mean yeah
1:18:40
i mean i appreciated that we need more of that yeah i don't think i saw horror especially i mean with so many final
1:18:47
girls most of these movies aren't done in i don't know how to describe it but like
1:18:52
i truly female perspective it's kind of more objective i don't know
1:18:58
like a dispassionate documentarian approach to to their lives yeah i guess i guess that's what you're
1:19:04
going for yeah i don't know maybe i'm just off on a tangent no no no i yeah no i think
1:19:10
there's something to that i was just thinking like in the original halloween like those kind of far away shots of lori just wandering around i
1:19:18
mean it's sort of from her perspective but it never really feels like it's from her perspective it's more like
1:19:24
from the perspective of someone who's just watching her do stuff yeah
1:19:31
so jack jack the little boy the youngest boy he has some kind of like a like a nervous breakdown when the
1:19:38
the meteor comes down there's this weird thing where i'm not sure if it's supposed to be the influence of the meteor i guess it must
1:19:45
be because he gets this kind of pink light in his brain when it's impacting on the earth you know and he screams and
1:19:51
wakes everybody up and then afterwards he's real in shock for quite a long time actually
1:19:58
so they go out into the yard and the meteorite is about the size of a grand piano at this point
1:20:05
it's right in their yard i think it's their backyard and it is glowing bright pink and purple
1:20:10
i feel like they get way too close for my liking but at least they didn't go up and touch it like stephen king did in creep show
1:20:17
yeah or that old homeless guy in the blob
1:20:22
yeah there's a lot of unfortunate meteorite touching in horror
1:20:28
films a lot of problems could have been avoided for just you know not touching something with your hand
1:20:34
i feel like i'd at least have to look though i would probably wear some kind of a at least a rag over my mouth
1:20:40
probably gloves and stuff and maybe i'd poke it with a stick but you know at least i'll try no i'm
1:20:46
sorry just like realistically if meteor hits out in the backyard i'm like am i getting gloves
1:20:52
and stuff like that i'm like i'm i'm going out there in my bathrobe and i'm taking a
1:20:58
look as the family debates in the living room about what to do there's like this
1:21:04
there's this interesting continuous shot of just jack jack's face as he's sitting on the couch kind of staring blankly you
1:21:10
know they got that sort of high wine that kind of indicates that he's he's got some kind of a shell shot going on some
1:21:16
kind of ptsd from the impact what's interesting about it though is
1:21:21
that he comes out of it i didn't think he would but they actually do you know they have
1:21:27
him be stunned for a while but then he sort of recovers and i don't know i thought that was i thought that was nice i was a little
1:21:33
fearful that they would have him be out of it for half the movie i mean granted i don't know he's such a weird
1:21:39
little kid he might as well be so i guess it doesn't make a lot of difference
1:21:44
yeah so the next morning the little or it was little now the
1:21:50
meteorite has evaporated down to just a little rock about the size of a football so it's already gone down
1:21:56
many times its original size and it's just like smoking in the pit
1:22:03
the mayor and and the sheriff show up and have a look and uh nathan tells the story of the
1:22:08
meteorite landing which i think i have recorded so let me just play that for you all
1:22:15
what the hell happened here well it was last night i was in bed with
1:22:20
my wife and it was the first time that we you know just the operation why are you
1:22:25
bringing this boom like like a like a sonic boom and a big flash like a pink light
1:22:32
or actually i don't even know what color it was it wasn't like any color i'd ever seen before and then everything just blew up or
1:22:39
fell from the sky that's what you want you just want to be
1:22:45
like loudly coughing after you've dealt with some weird glowing rock in your yard
1:22:52
it's like no color i've ever seen before it's kind of a kind of a purple color
1:22:58
haven't you seen purple before like no that's not what i mean i mean yeah i don't know in terms of the
1:23:04
film what the color is supposed to be it's shown to us as kind of a bright pink
1:23:10
but i get the feeling it's supposed to be something else something harder to identify and probably impossible to film
1:23:19
yeah i think i would have preferred something that kind of shimmers between colors more i think that would have been more effective to show
1:23:25
that something weird is going on i guess i don't i i do like that they just committed to a color though because
1:23:31
i feel like when i pictured it i kind of imagined it as a uh
1:23:37
an oil spill but yeah i don't know i feel like it shows more confidence in what you're
1:23:42
doing if you just like pick one sure something that films well
1:23:47
yeah no i mean like it makes for a good aesthetic yeah that's true
1:23:53
oh man it also made for a killer poster all the bright pinks and stuff it was great oh the movie poster for this film
1:23:59
is awesome ward the hydrologist shows up to check out the rock i mean i don't know what
1:24:04
this has to do with water but you know whatever the more the merrier you might as well come look at my rock
1:24:11
i mean honestly in the original story that character who like by the way
1:24:16
didn't even have a name no did he not no yeah despite him being the point of view character his whole
1:24:22
thing was just in the story all this stuff takes place over the course of like months
1:24:28
oh yeah i mean i think that's kind of i like that approach a little better that it's more gradual and weird yeah yeah i
1:24:35
mean yeah like in in the context of a movie they just don't have time for all that i
1:24:41
suppose yeah they want things to happen real quick but also yeah his character like in the
1:24:46
book is basically just gradually checking in every few months and just seeing this family get more and more
1:24:52
[ __ ] up uh well i mean i think the original story is is i don't know if it was intended this way
1:24:58
but it comes off as like a damning indictment of poverty you know that you
1:25:04
just can't get out of a horrible situation even when it becomes unmistakable
1:25:09
what if the land you live on suddenly becomes radioactive would you be able to move you know what would you do if you
1:25:15
couldn't you know that kind of a thing yeah uh i 100
1:25:20
lovecraft didn't intend that yeah but it is interesting how some of that bleeds through especially there's
1:25:26
like a point where the um i think the wife's name is like amy in the in the
1:25:31
story yeah yeah they changed a lot of the names just because like oh you know amy was the guy okay yeah
1:25:38
yeah that's uh that's what i'm saying is like some of these names like don't hold up like you know you
1:25:43
know a guy named annie pierce but uh
1:25:48
where like the wife basically like begs the um he's a surveyor in the uh in the story
1:25:56
basically like begs him like you know take me away from here and
1:26:01
like in a way that's like not quite coming onto him but you kind of like get that
1:26:07
feeling that in her desperation that she might like if your life's in danger i mean
1:26:12
like there are worse no no no i guess no i that's interesting because
1:26:17
like first of all you know again one of one of the very few female lovecraft characters but also
1:26:23
yeah because the there is a sort of like class desperation of like she literally has nowhere to go because she like
1:26:30
married this guy and she has no prospects outside of this
1:26:35
yeah and there's something very interesting about that to me in the story i remember that much
1:26:40
the fact that they could leave and they didn't that the despair in their hearts
1:26:47
killed them as much as this stuff yeah yeah i mean like i guess like physically they could have left i mean they make it
1:26:54
pretty clear once the like the crops start going they're done they got like they've got they've got
1:27:00
nothing yeah we'll get to that but yeah yeah so you know ward the hydrologist you know
1:27:05
he's checking out the rock but you know before he gets over there lavinia kind of sort of flirts with him
1:27:10
or at least well he looks at her boots she thinks that he's looking at her legs and so it's kind of like
1:27:16
supposed to be cute or something but he's not quite paying attention to her
1:27:22
and she's sorting out whether or not she feels that way you know it's awkward from both of them for different reasons
1:27:28
yeah well it's also i think maybe she's just bored because one of the only guys that's probably
1:27:33
showed up you know around her house in like maybe months or years or something yeah
1:27:39
also i i don't know they're like ambiguous do they go to school i assume they do i don't know no there's a there's a conversation with
1:27:46
that effect they aren't going to school right now okay i mean he's clearly older than her but
1:27:52
they never give like specific ages but it just like yeah like it seems like it's probably
1:27:58
lopsided yeah yeah nathan sends lavinia back in the house
1:28:04
when he kind of picks up that she might be interested in him i think and then teresa just kind of shames her
1:28:10
for showing an interest in a man i mean not cool isn't that like what's supposed to
1:28:16
happen like why are you being weird about this you know yeah i don't remember i thought like i guess like to me i guess it came off as
1:28:22
more like teasing i guess but she's just like think of the
1:28:28
signals you're sending called gmom you want me to think of the signals how about the signals you were sending
1:28:34
that you're just a dried-up old crone like okay that's maybe going
1:28:40
a little too hard on maul they don't say that in the movie but i just maybe no i mean
1:28:46
that'd be kind of funny and then nathan is just like and now if you don't mind it's time we milk the
1:28:51
alpacas and we're just like what i love that he goes and watches
1:28:58
a hydrologist has no reason to go check out alpacas but he's just like that's kind of neat i'll go check it out yeah
1:29:07
we are then treated to nicolas cage going into a sort of bizarre reverie while he milks his alpacas
1:29:13
and you know as i said before i could watch this all day long it's so fun watching him just
1:29:19
milking alpacas and saying weird stuff about it yeah and then just drinking a raw alpaca
1:29:26
milk like he's luke skywalker or something yeah i find putting fennel in their feed
1:29:33
increases the yield and improves the flavor
1:29:42
yuck all right so ward asks if anyone else is on the property nathan tells him about ezra
1:29:49
some sort of new age crystal dude that squats on their property and sells weed to their
1:29:55
son benny now and again we're going to be introduced to him in your seconds but can i just say this character rules
1:30:02
sure yeah i he's great nathan just says he's special
1:30:09
this is how he puts it and yeah this is tommy chong more or less playing himself
1:30:15
he's got a colorful shack all wired up with cameras and speakers it's it's kind of
1:30:21
kind of crazy i weird that he does that like i it it is but i i love it i love the
1:30:28
whole setup you want to tell us about his cat jacob um
1:30:35
well i had to have to admit for a moment there
1:30:41
when they introduced the cat i had the thought wouldn't it be funny
1:30:46
if they gave the cat the name of lovecraft's actual cat oh yeah i had that joke too
1:30:55
in my head hey here's my cat beep
1:31:02
okay well to explain to the audience this weirdness that we've just exchanged okay so the cat's name is g-spot and
1:31:10
it's really stupid and one's just like oh you named the [ __ ] g-spot ha
1:31:15
it's a bad joke that's a bad joke and then i wrote as a response in my notes
1:31:20
at least they did not name him after hp lovecraft's cat a name i will not utter
1:31:26
uh yeah you can look that way look it up if you're curious yeah it's in the interview yeah just check it out or don't you know okay
1:31:33
okay peter i don't know if you've ever if you knew this but
1:31:39
i found this out recently there's a picture of lovecraft with that cat
1:31:45
no it's not his cat i looked it up also oh it's not i love that there's dueling we have
1:31:52
dueling research yeah no it's a it's a picture of someone else's cat that he posed with which is weirder
1:31:58
that he just picked up someone else's cat it's like a friend of his escape okay cause i was gonna say
1:32:04
it would it would be so much funnier if his cat wasn't black
1:32:11
yes like like just i don't know to give your cat that name but then yeah
1:32:17
it's just like it's just like a calico or something yeah what jacob is
1:32:23
referring to is that there's been an internet meme it's kind of an older one where people would just put up that picture of lovecraft holding a cat
1:32:31
and he's like hey this is this is lovecraft holding his cat's name and i can't say the name and you know people
1:32:36
were like well what's his name and then you know there's a pause you know while they look it up and then they're just like oh no
1:32:45
uh yeah it was a childhood cat i don't think he was even alive when he was old enough to
1:32:51
be posing in that picture so you know i think it was wrong for multiple reasons i guess i'm just saying it is a great
1:32:58
picture of lovecraft holding a cat though which is i don't know that strategy is a little weird anyway
1:33:03
yeah yeah is there a picture of him like holding up a small dog or something you know or
1:33:09
like wearing a scarf i actually don't like what what's with these pictures i feel
1:33:15
i feel like i read that lovecraft didn't like dogs very much he feels like a cat person he's definitely a cat
1:33:21
well i mean he wrote multiple stories about how cool cats are
1:33:27
yeah weird poetry about cats and how they walk in the land of dreams or or something
1:33:32
yeah and then there was uh the short story the cat's vult are
1:33:37
sure it was like one of his weird he has that whole like dream escape
1:33:43
fantasy world thing lovecraft also did a bunch of fantasy stuff that isn't terribly horror related
1:33:51
yeah i don't know it's fun oh yeah yeah
1:33:57
sorry i i just found it yeah the cats of ulfar is like one of his first stories
1:34:02
oh okay so i guess it was an early work i thought it was just later worked huh that's weird it does yeah it does feel
1:34:09
it doesn't feel like him yeah yeah
1:34:14
so yeah so ward notices the water he has offered in ezra's shack
1:34:19
it looks kind of weird it looks bad it is such unbelievable luck that a
1:34:24
hydrologist with a mobile lab is just right there to be able to test the water
1:34:30
it's like having exactly what you need right in the middle of a problem and you know what
1:34:36
it helps them not at all yeah
1:34:42
not in the least so as night falls a storm breaks out and
1:34:48
lightning strikes the gardener's families well a whole bunch of times i'm not sure
1:34:55
so you know the meteorite is kind of evaporating or being absorbed into the soil or maybe melting in the rain or all
1:35:01
of the above and i could be wrong but i think part of it also just straight up crawls down the
1:35:07
well i don't know if that's true or if the energy from the meteorite becomes
1:35:13
the creature that threatens them every time all right
1:35:22
sorry everybody jacob's room is talking to him yeah well i can't turn okay there's like
1:35:27
a little setup thing i have to like leave it be okay okay so yeah so for whatever reason
1:35:33
something weird is down the well and it's being struck by lightning like a whole bunch of times
1:35:40
back at the hydrologist's base camp he's got a little tent he's set up for himself ward is unable to understand a phone
1:35:46
call he receives he then sees some weird shimmering shapes in the light of his flashlight i think that might actually
1:35:53
be one of my favorite parts of the movie just because of how subtly weird and scary that is that there's like stuff
1:36:00
that's kind of outside of his sight but is all around him like weird shapes
1:36:05
yeah but then he's interrupted because the the jeep i think it's his jeep it just
1:36:11
starts on its own and he like shields his eyes with a book i don't know if you noticed but it's a
1:36:18
paperback of algernon blackwood's classic tale the willows do you know anything about that story
1:36:24
it's one of my favorite horror stories peter uh what is it really yes honestly no i love that story wow i
1:36:32
was happy that i got a shout out yeah i think that apparently it was influential on like hp lovecraft's writing i
1:36:39
remember him speaking well of it in some something he wrote yeah no it's uh
1:36:44
if you haven't read it or you know listen to like a you know
1:36:50
an audiobook you know rendition of it i'd suggest doing it it's it's really interesting when you finish
1:36:57
the story there's not a lot there but they do he does
1:37:02
a lot with the atmosphere of like not something that should be especially frightening which is like an
1:37:08
island with a bunch of like willow trees on it yeah yeah i will say that a lot of people say
1:37:14
that mr james is one of the classic ghost story writers i actually have always preferred aldrin on blackwood i
1:37:20
think he's a better writer i think his stuff tends to be a little scarier yeah i 100 agree
1:37:26
there's a weird story he wrote unless i'm wrong i haven't like it's on my bookshelf and it's just out of my reach
1:37:31
so i can't like verify but i it was a weird little story about a doll with like poison like on a needle it was like
1:37:38
a little possessed doll and that could kill you it's a pretty great story i don't remember that one yeah
1:37:44
it might be the wrong guy yeah i can't reach i'm i'm encased in things oh whatever you'll have to take
1:37:50
my word for it anyway it was pretty good oh yeah so yeah the willows is as you said it's
1:37:56
a it's an island with willow trees on it and and not a lot happens but it's kind of like spooky
1:38:02
i guess yeah about atmosphere it's almost all atmosphere which like
1:38:09
sounds like it might not be that great i mean you typically want stuff
1:38:14
happening but like it's really it's very unique uniquely
1:38:20
evocative because i think that was something that um ultranam blackhood was good with also was just
1:38:26
conveying a sense of nature yeah i mean he did the wendigo but like he's
1:38:32
done like other like nature themed or or did other nature themed horror stories that are similarly evocative
1:38:40
i'm so glad i have you here jacob just to know that because i hadn't even looked at it i've never even read the
1:38:46
willows i feel like maybe i should so maybe i'll look it up afterwards yeah i highly recommend it
1:38:53
awesome i would actually okay i would i would go this far i like the willows better than anything
1:38:59
lovecraft did oh wow i praised jacob
1:39:05
i think so okay so by next morning the meteorite is completely gone and some rather unusual
1:39:12
looking flowers have sprung up around the gardener well a news van shows up w-a-r-k news work
1:39:20
it's a terrible abbreviation it's work news that feels realistic
1:39:27
yeah nathan gives a pretty ridiculous news interview
1:39:32
the family has a fun time making fun of him for it except for theresa who seems to be kind of quietly losing her mind
1:39:39
while she chops vegetables in the kitchen i don't know why she's acting so weird so soon
1:39:45
maybe it's unrelated like she's just having a weird day do you think it's supposed to be the influence of the meteorite that she
1:39:52
suddenly kind of loses a sense of herself and just like slices her fingers here in a second
1:39:59
uh that's what i got i mean um i i guess i didn't feel like she was
1:40:04
cracking any sooner than that you know yeah i don't know it's yeah it's weird
1:40:10
because she doesn't even notice after she slices her fingers nathan sends their son jack you know to to bring her
1:40:17
out to watch the news interview like i don't know why he needs her to be there for him to be mad at the news
1:40:24
i can't believe they didn't give me a comb like you don't need your wife here for this part you know
1:40:31
maybe i will say moral support or something yeah um i think that she
1:40:38
kind of comes under the influence first probably just because like the character in the book is the first one who like really starts
1:40:46
getting the worst of it oh so i think it's just like a hold over from that
1:40:52
maybe so let me see where the hell are we jack goes to get her i guess while she's
1:40:59
chopping carrots and she just slices off her first two fingers i believe it's on her left hand and then she just
1:41:06
doesn't even notice so she brings up her hands she's like oh it's time for dinner which also by the way that's not true
1:41:11
she wasn't done cutting the vegetables i don't know what she's gonna do with them
1:41:16
put him in a stew i don't know so yeah it just seems like she's really
1:41:22
kind of kind of lost her marbles a little bit kind of early in a movie really you know if this is supposed to
1:41:27
be a slow descent into madness or something also if you'll note nathan cooked the
1:41:33
meal the night before it was some french meal with duck meat in it and other things and the family hated it
1:41:40
and so then the mom very quietly told them he was like oh i'll cook the next one so
1:41:47
okay actually i will say first first time i watched this movie i actually i blamed him i got a little
1:41:53
like i got a little upset especially lavinia because you know what the dinner sounds
1:42:00
good yeah i didn't catch the name but it was supposed to be a french delicacy or or something
1:42:06
yeah she calls it peasant food but i don't think nathan cooks it well i mean i don't know i feel like if nathan
1:42:13
had cooked a better dinner then his wife would not have tried to cook dinner the
1:42:18
next night and would not have cut off her fingers this is nathan's fault yeah
1:42:24
no yeah i could i could believe that in a way the whole thing is his fault he should have just cooked better
1:42:31
yeah or not tried to have sex with his wife i mean that's what really brought down the meteor i mean that's the theory
1:42:36
i'm working with wait a minute oh that's right the hydrologist saw lavinia doing the ritual
1:42:42
and then when she emerges from the house he's just like well
1:42:47
did you call this down and she's just like as if you know like my magic's not that good
1:42:54
maybe that was the movie like throwing that out as a as a red herring in case you want to blame witches for stuff
1:43:01
you could blame her sure why not i i don't know about that
1:43:07
i think they're just kidding around but it's just yeah yeah i like it when when they throw out options although that's
1:43:12
not one that i approve of personally like i said i love witches so i i don't want them to be the butt of jokes well
1:43:19
no jokes are fine the butt of persecution that's a better way to put it yeah
1:43:24
so anyway uh nathan puts benny in charge and drives teresa out to the hospital to get her fingers reattached they live
1:43:31
very far out in the woods so they have a ways to go and it takes them all night basically nathan very
1:43:38
explicitly tells benny to bring the alpacas into the barn by 10.
1:43:44
benny does not do this what's going to tell you right now benny is a slacker
1:43:49
yeah it's kind of [ __ ] up given their situation come on man well okay it's not clear
1:43:55
about the way time passes it seems like time only goes away when it's inconvenient
1:44:01
and you never go forward in time i thought that would have been cool too or if you go back in time it seems like
1:44:07
they only lose time by some kind of selective memory loss where they're just like oh i can't remember what happened
1:44:13
and then suddenly it's way further in time but you know they never go backwards i've seen in the
1:44:19
descriptions of this movie that they're supposed to be like disruptions in the space time continuum and all this but
1:44:24
really i only see it going one direction it's just you losing time which is kind of a bummer
1:44:30
if it did both it would be way more fun yeah the color does seem like a bit of a bummer
1:44:37
it seems like an unfortunate happenstance to have the color show up yeah well consider this scenario what if
1:44:44
benny or someone had asked lavinia you know or someone else about the meteor and she's just like
1:44:50
what are you talking about there's no meteor in the yard and he goes out there and it isn't there
1:44:55
and then later on he goes back out there and it's there again you know like he's going back in time as well okay maybe
1:45:03
that's two yeah i was gonna say i got i got two problems with that the first of all
1:45:08
being that opens the door for it did it really happen interpretation
1:45:14
yeah which is uh which is bad and i don't think any movie should ever do that
1:45:19
and then two yeah i don't think this movie needed that element of confusion on top of it
1:45:26
i i kind of like it's like maybe not super straightforward but it's
1:45:31
at least like you know where it's coming from yeah i mean it stays fairly clear or at
1:45:37
least it's only just confusing enough to be fun so i suppose maybe you can't get things too
1:45:44
muddy i don't like some of the things that the color does we'll get to that
1:45:51
but i guess this part's okay so sam the dog follows benny around
1:45:56
everywhere he is a very sharp looking dog his coloring almost makes him look like
1:46:02
he's part wolf i don't know what the breed of dog is but it's pretty cool looking
1:46:08
uh yeah i don't know yeah i don't know it looks like it might be some kind of a shepherd dog or something or a sheepdog but i've
1:46:15
never encountered it before so i can't speak to that the dog is played by two real dogs
1:46:22
i don't know wait it's three dogs i saw on the imdb there's a li leia or leia
1:46:28
as sam the dog and there's myna as sam the dog and there's afro as sam the dog
1:46:34
it's gotta be a breed i mean you can't get so many dogs that look identical and not have it be something like that
1:46:43
so now finally we get to that part of the movie where it goes out of his way to show everyone
1:46:48
drinking the water now that the meteorite is totally gone and like absorbed into the soil
1:46:53
couldn't you use a a nice glass of water wouldn't that go down great just right now
1:47:00
oh okay you know i will say this through this through line of like being out in
1:47:06
the woods and not being able to trust your drinking water added an extra special layer
1:47:14
of relatability to the horror in this movie sure i i've covered that before
1:47:19
but uh not being able to trust drinking water is uh
1:47:24
you don't think about how often you uh you rely on being able to just like go to a tap and
1:47:30
get clean water yeah really that's part of why i think it's more accessible as a as a poverty issue like
1:47:37
a class issue but the movie chooses to sidestep that instead
1:47:42
they do a lot of this nonsense where electronics don't work and phones don't work
1:47:48
they lose track of time so they're not able to organize it's sort of like the color has to manifest all these reasons
1:47:54
to keep them from leaving which i i honestly kind of don't like i would prefer that they just choose to
1:48:00
stay or choose to go and like why does the color have to care you know if it's like this great cosmic
1:48:05
being it you probably shouldn't give a damn either way you know like what you do whatever stay organized i don't care
1:48:12
yeah i like not to like get into it too much but like that's
1:48:19
horror movies in general i mean i mean i mean like movies in general don't tend
1:48:25
to focus too much on class but uh one of the reasons that i feel like bad
1:48:31
horror movie logic can happen so much like in just the idea of like like a haunted house movie
1:48:37
is that these movies tend to ignore class the whole like well just move thing it's
1:48:43
like yeah how yeah no that's like actually not realistic for a lot of
1:48:48
people to be able to just up and move you know yeah but but movies are stories of sexual abuse or whatever where you
1:48:55
know you find out that someone's doing something and the circumstances are so dire that they can't leave even though
1:49:01
they know what's happening which is just so horrible you know yeah so like i feel like if
1:49:07
not to rail on it too much but it does these movies are written by people who are like generally well off enough to like
1:49:14
not have like an understanding of this stuff you think they're speaking from
1:49:20
ignorance you know they don't understand well i mean like it's so pervasive that like you wonder or at least i wonder you
1:49:26
know if it's that you know i'm not saying necessarily is but just like if yeah it
1:49:32
just it feels like such a like a common element of movies in general but i feel like in
1:49:37
horror movies it feels especially pronounced it's why i like it's i think part of why you like um
1:49:44
stephen king's stories are they tend to be more cognizant of class and i
1:49:51
think that's part of why they feel more realistic yeah i think just because he really savors
1:49:56
character studies and stuff he's able to capture that maybe not always on purpose
1:50:01
but you know whatever you know however it got there it's there and it does improve the story quite a bit
1:50:07
sure yeah like uh i mean like this is like a kind of like a dumb example but like uh
1:50:12
graveyard shift literally nobody wouldn't nobody would willingly get themselves
1:50:19
into that predicament unless like it is in the movie or well you know i pursue the story too i've only watched
1:50:26
the movie where it's just like you go down there or your ass is fired that is a movie by the way for those who haven't
1:50:33
seen it it's about people going to have to clean out the basement of a cotton mill
1:50:38
and it's got a horrible monster down there but they just can't afford to not take the job like these people are
1:50:43
desperate so they have to go down there well i guess they're not really quite aware that something's down there but
1:50:49
but it slows their being able to leave because of it you know because of the whole class thing
1:50:54
but yeah but that's the thing is like in like so many other movies they would just like ignore that and then it would be just like well like why
1:51:02
why not leave yes like the story just answers it right away like if they leave they're out of a job and
1:51:08
then you know they're screwed similarly in the mangler there's this horrible haunted machine
1:51:14
that eats people's hands but it's hard to quit a job even if it eats your hands you know like
1:51:20
even if people do things are bad enough in some places you might have to work around a haunted
1:51:25
machine anyway regardless i mean you know i guess not to get like too dark but i mean people work around
1:51:31
machines that mangle you all the time and they're not evil it's just like
1:51:36
sure you know you just get like a you know a bit of clothing cutting a lathe or
1:51:42
something and suddenly your fingers are gone yeah i worked for exactly one day at an amazon warehouse
1:51:50
when i was desperate they they have all these pull-outs i know what you call them they're like the
1:51:56
their wheels like on on brackets so that you can push around packages
1:52:01
on you know on all the little wheels i don't remember what you call those things it's kind of like a conveyor belt it's just little spinning wheels
1:52:07
yeah and those things will will devour your hands and they'll pinch your skin
1:52:12
it'll rip it off and so they instead of making it safer they just have a rule that if you touch those
1:52:19
things with your hands you are fired like right then and there so
1:52:24
it's like they choose not to blame the machine they blame you for touching it how dare you touch it this thing that
1:52:30
destroys you yeah it's your fault that was one of maybe a half dozen
1:52:36
reasons why i chose not to work there it's pretty terrible no yeah fair enough i was gonna say i i did see a rather
1:52:43
unfortunate video out of china where someone uh i mean let's just say they make them a lot bigger
1:52:50
and uh lily more than your hand oh wow yeah dear lord all right
1:52:58
nightmare way to go okay so
1:53:04
yeah yeah on that note the alpacas drink the water and start
1:53:10
acting strange jack jack starts talking to someone he calls the man in the well
1:53:15
lavinia drinks the water and gets some intestinal distress to put it politely okay i
1:53:21
i really dislike that the man the well things i feel like it anthropomorphizes the color too much
1:53:28
you don't like that i like calling him that just because it gave him a name well granted yeah then i start calling
1:53:33
him him but he's not really him it's more of an it's it's it's not even a is it a presence i'm not sure if it's
1:53:38
even that it's like something beyond that i don't know i guess it's like being inside of something's brain like the
1:53:45
neurons are firing and just like you're getting in the way of it you know like it's almost like it's disconnected from
1:53:50
you i don't know i i prefer how the uh the original story
1:53:55
treats it where like everything that happens seems really incidental
1:54:01
like there's no malice to it yeah and it just like it shows up one day
1:54:07
this thing that i guess it is a thing because at the end it just leaves for seemingly no reason
1:54:13
which is like also equally like horrifying yeah it's just like yeah which also shows
1:54:20
that's how this movie ends so yeah like well no i'm just saying that like uh
1:54:26
it feels more impersonal in the story which i i like it's just like it was there for a time
1:54:32
it's gone now whatever its effect was is like you know not like it cared
1:54:38
yeah it's like it just sat down to rest for a while and caused some chaos and then just left it's like you sat on an
1:54:43
ant hill by accident and you look down at the ants and you're like i don't care whatever buy
1:54:49
well yeah yeah but the ants are people jacob
1:54:56
they're nicholas cage and family okay so can we mention this yes
1:55:03
sir did we mention really like gnarly uh mantis that was like yeah
1:55:09
that's right where we're getting to this part because jack jack there's a man in the well he looks down
1:55:15
in there and i thought at first that he saw like a pulsating brain but then it opens and a little weird
1:55:21
pink praying mantis comes out with too many eyeballs which is a cool scene i do like that
1:55:27
thing it's it's a good design yeah although i did i like it but like
1:55:32
it also just aside from the eyes there are praying mantises that just look like that in real life
1:55:39
man looked at him up close they look real spooky yeah but just sort of like
1:55:45
i feel like that you maybe should have done a little bit more to make it more obviously
1:55:50
out there just because like i mean like it did pop out of the brain of a creature but it's like yeah i mean i think that's what happens yeah
1:55:57
yeah but it's like that's just what brain mantises look like it did open its little praying mantis
1:56:02
mouth and like little tentacles came out but that was about it oh okay yeah i guess yeah i remember that
1:56:09
it just kind of gives them the raspberry before it flies away just like yeah
1:56:15
so yeah so nathan tries to call home from the hospital and lavinia picks up but she can't understand what what he's
1:56:21
saying it just comes out as like weird muffled yelling oh scary
1:56:26
[Music] okay it's a little scary i was thinking i was thinking that it
1:56:34
would be funnier or not funnier or maybe spookier if they were getting calls but it wasn't
1:56:40
from them they're just like getting calls like any you hear your dad's voice but it's muffled and then you're like
1:56:45
why did you call me like in the middle of the night and say weird stuff he's like i didn't call you
1:56:52
then who was phone jacob who indeed
1:56:59
all right so uh a local news report on the tv in the gardner house mentions uh
1:57:04
dunwich insmooth aylesbury and kingsport which are all locations in lovecraft's
1:57:10
fictionalized version of new england yeah i feel like lovecraft didn't do enough
1:57:16
of the kingsport yeah i don't remember much but uh yeah i think it was only one or two stories
1:57:22
it was the uh that seaside town with that uh the terrible old man
1:57:28
yeah which totally old man i think again old man
1:57:33
well no i mean like literally from the street called the terrible old name but uh
1:57:40
i think of the cold air guy who like melts himself but that wasn't the terrible old man no that i mean that guy also rolls but
1:57:46
uh no this like had some funny like details about him that like he's he's like a
1:57:52
very malevolent figure in the town but like i love the idea that he uh he goes into town and pays stuff at the
1:57:58
general store with like spanish doubloons
1:58:03
wouldn't that would just like it's like it's like to show how old he is but also just like
1:58:10
as a character treat that's very funny here you go um i got some pieces of eight that should cover it here you go
1:58:16
yeah just these slivers of gold coins yeah i have some huge uh
1:58:22
novelty uh pirate treasure coins you want these yeah do you take gemstones and pearls
1:58:30
what about a locket of a mummy's hair how about that
1:58:36
um so this movie is meant to be the first in a trilogy of lovecraftian films that
1:58:41
was going to be made by richard stanley the the director i don't know if that's going to happen but i do like that kind
1:58:47
of optimism and she's like yeah sure i'm going to make a whole bunch of these that would be nice did they say what the
1:58:54
others would be no at least not that i know of i didn't look enough into it
1:58:59
into his false promises i don't believe it to be honest this movie was enough of a success
1:59:05
really i mean maybe but i don't know i feel like everybody needed to have been a bigger hit to guarantee it
1:59:11
yeah peter i can i can look this up right now for you and i'm telling you it's not happening
1:59:16
so budget six to 12 million box office 1 million
1:59:23
yeah i did know the box office but i didn't know the production costs so that's that's four yeah so oh no so 100
1:59:28
so sorry yeah that's that's not happening also thank you probably just guaranteed that the audience is probably
1:59:35
isn't going to care about this either like oh that movie i didn't watch yeah that's that's great
1:59:41
yeah and that's weird because i don't know i feel like nicolas cage is like usually more of a
1:59:47
a pull than that you know yeah you'd think
1:59:52
all right so lavinia gets stuck having to clean up the bloody cutting board in the kitchen
1:59:57
she loses track of time and suddenly the sink is overflowing and if she gets another call she can't
2:00:02
understand and then she feels sick and she has to puke like they're really piling on all the weirdness onto her like all at once
2:00:09
all of these weird things yeah and then ward knocks on the door and he's he just stopped by to tell her
2:00:15
the water is bad and maybe not to drink it i like that it's i don't know he thinks it's like a friendly call but
2:00:21
it's you know it seems like it's a it's a bigger deal than he makes it out to be he's just sort of like uh maybe you
2:00:26
shouldn't drink the water you know it feels more like it should be like one thousand percent do not drink
2:00:32
this water you have to get out of here right now yeah he he he undersells it
2:00:39
i guess he's trying to be polite you know they never say what he finds in the water which vaguely disappoints me but
2:00:45
then again whatever he says i would then have looked up and found to be wrong so maybe it's better to just
2:00:51
you know use your imagination you're like whatever there's something wrong there's weird little parasites in the water
2:00:56
or whatever yeah yeah i was gonna say they they shouldn't try and like science up the story but uh
2:01:02
in the in the original story they do go over like all the different ways because because
2:01:09
like in the story it's not just one guy that shows up it's like a whole bunch of people from like miss katonic university
2:01:16
who like analyze the hell out of the color and they go over all the different ways
2:01:21
that it reacts to like different chemicals and whatnot it's like like lovecraft doesn't often science up
2:01:28
to stories like that but it is very funny that you it was like oh and this is how the color reacts to silicon
2:01:34
and this is what it reacts to like acids and it's like yeah all right
2:01:40
at least they try it well yeah after that you know after ward unsuccessfully tries to get lavinia to
2:01:46
listen to him but i mean i don't know i think she stopped drinking the water at that point but it's probably too late i guess if you drink any amount of it
2:01:53
you're just doomed probably yeah so then he goes off to ezra shack out in the woods
2:01:59
ezra has his shirt off and he's recording static of aliens he says lives under the ground
2:02:05
i kind of hate that he's right you know he sounds so crazy the thing is
2:02:12
i really love old conspiracy theory like paranoid hippie type characters and you
2:02:18
really don't get much of them anymore not anymore yeah that's true yeah i mean like as well i mean like
2:02:24
because like unfortunately like all those people have i don't know fried their brain on way more annoying
2:02:29
conspiracy theories but you know what i mean stuff like
2:02:35
relatively harmless stuff like aliens like signals and whatnot it's like that's cute you know it's fun i consider
2:02:41
those arizona weirdos like the crystal guys who are just more kind of mystical and passive they're more like a good
2:02:48
time i mean i don't know maybe that's a stereotype but i like to think that those guys who go out in the desert you
2:02:53
know and just meditate are cooler dudes you know dudes and ladies
2:02:58
yeah no i've uh i've encountered a few of those people they're generally chill
2:03:07
okay so teresa's surgery is successful she offers no explanation
2:03:13
why she cut her fingers off i mean i kind of wanted her to say something but she doesn't so you know whatever i guess
2:03:18
it's whatever you want it to be menopause yeah
2:03:25
what if that was it just like out of the blue oh by the way also this
2:03:31
or that she was like pregnant or something oh god one last chance
2:03:39
jesus okay also i i i kind of like your um
2:03:44
nicolas cage impression it's really hard to do his voice and so
2:03:50
i just whatever this is just me doing it you know it's it's fine i i like it
2:03:58
they almost run over ezra's cat oh yeah he kind of says that like oh you won't recognize it man
2:04:06
you know they do find it and it is a monster so i guess he saw that he was a monster and he was kind of cool with it i mean he didn't
2:04:12
seem that upset when he was talking to ward oh hey by the way my cat drank some water and became a
2:04:18
monster so like maybe maybe watch out um
2:04:24
he's on the lookout he looks like a chupacabra now i was gonna say uh when i first saw that
2:04:30
my thought was oh that's just one of those hairless cats
2:04:35
that's like not a monster that's just what hairless cats look like they yeah they do look pretty monstrous
2:04:41
just normally they look like gollum yeah yeah gremlin-esque
2:04:46
precious other oh they're great i would we have too many dogs to have a cat but like it
2:04:53
would be it'd be great to have oh no i know i was saying like precious as in like my precious like no i the idea of touching
2:05:00
a hairless cat makes my skin crawl that sounds so gross to me have you ever done it though
2:05:06
no i haven't i don't know maybe it's nice but yeah oh yeah i like it it's like
2:05:12
it's like okay i love this makes sense but it's like warm soft sandpaper
2:05:22
okay that's that is really weird yeah
2:05:28
all right so back at the gardener house i'm gonna get off this subject sorry lavinia
2:05:36
she's waxing poetic about hairless yeah lavinia and benny are losing more time
2:05:42
all of the electronics in the house are acting funny they can't understand what teresa is saying when she calls to check
2:05:48
in and so when they get home nathan just like loses his cool when he gets home with teresa only to find that the
2:05:55
alpacas are wandering around in the dark so i mean i think benny loses track of time so it's not exactly his fault but i
2:06:02
wonder if he's just sitting somewhere during that time or maybe he lost track of time but he
2:06:07
was also lazy so even if he had lost track he wouldn't have done it maybe he just doesn't
2:06:14
remember not doing it so he doesn't feel shame oh well okay i might have done it if i
2:06:19
had remembered but in a way this is a godsend you know because now he doesn't know that it was his fault or not i am going to offer up
2:06:26
an alternate theory sure which is that uh this movie takes place uh slightly in
2:06:32
the future and uh stellaris just released the new overlords dlc and uh
2:06:39
yeah wow that is such a timely reference jacob
2:06:44
i might actually get this edited in time that that will have any kind of coherence to someone but yeah
2:06:52
dear lord i know i'm sorry just eats all his time it's a black hole
2:06:58
for his attention also this is the first point when he loses his cool with benny for letting
2:07:04
the alpacas just wander around and he starts doing the weird nasally voice
2:07:10
from at least one that i first heard from vampires kiss i don't want to describe that movie to anyone i think
2:07:16
you should just see that movie it is technically a horror film
2:07:22
well question mark it sort of is it might be it is so strange of a film
2:07:28
it's i don't know i feel like it's it's some kind of a landmark in strangeness that it even exists i feel like it
2:07:35
should have been canceled like someone should have seen the dailies and been like oh this can't see the light of day
2:07:41
but it but it does it exists it's it they made it you know i can't believe the editor when he was
2:07:47
making it was just like um oh this is okay i guess we could i guess i'll put my name on this you
2:07:53
know what i mean uh oh also yeah before like don't
2:07:59
if you haven't seen the movie don't look up like funny compilations of like no don't move yeah
2:08:05
watch the movie all the way through beginning to end yeah it's it's not the same
2:08:11
the clips from vampires kiss are amazing i will say that watching him out of context is incredibly funny
2:08:18
especially when he puts in the fake vampire teeth in one scene yeah let's but no watch the movie and
2:08:24
then go back and savor those scenes that's yeah that's my recommendation as well uh you know if you're gonna watch
2:08:30
it it's not a good movie watch it by yourself and then judge whether or not you will
2:08:35
unleash it on other people but it is a movie that should be seen it is the strangest nicholas cage movie
2:08:42
by far maybe yeah yeah i mean it's funny to say it but it is it
2:08:50
is a stranger movie than mandy yes even though less happens in it
2:08:56
yeah it's it's a far more mundane movie than mandy but it is far more strange
2:09:03
yeah so you know embarrassed at his own outburst nathan goes to take a shower in
2:09:08
the gross water some kind of i don't know jelly fish structure builds
2:09:14
up in the drain and when he tries to you know pick it up it like attacks i don't know what he
2:09:19
attaches to his hand it's like it kind of grabs onto him yeah it's very strange and then it's
2:09:25
like it just runs away down the drain when he drops it i don't know what that's supposed to be i guess it's all of the same thing it's
2:09:31
all just an extension of the color which makes it seem like it's some kind of a weird
2:09:37
semi-aquatic looking creature either that or the color just makes
2:09:43
these things kind of spontaneously that could also be true that it's just kind of creating stuff around it
2:09:49
yeah in the original story it's not creating anything it's just corrupting the stuff that's already here just
2:09:56
by being around yeah i mean weird flowers are already popping up and you're getting these
2:10:01
weird insects and mantises and whatever yeah weird pollen mist is starting to
2:10:07
move around later on you see some really beautiful shots of the yard where it looks like alice in wonderland or something with
2:10:14
all these bizarre bright flowers and just fines everywhere
2:10:20
once you see that jelly thing in your shower though as the dad you should know it's time to go
2:10:27
there's no excuse for this why would you stay at i mean he is a super wealthy guy we already talked
2:10:33
about this class thing i mean he could just go and it would be super easy and it wouldn't be a big deal you could
2:10:39
go live in a hotel for like a week and then by the time he got back it would probably all be over why why are we
2:10:44
staying here yeah go to disneyland and just see what happens you know like when you get back
2:10:51
see if your house is still there people at wealthy have basically no
2:10:56
excuse to get involved in a horror movie scenario there was a bad snl skit
2:11:03
i like it but i think it was kristen wiig and it was about this lady who was inviting someone over i think it was the
2:11:08
twilight girl whatever her name is she was gonna watch the house like a house sitter and kristen wiig keeps
2:11:15
getting weird phone calls like as she's trying to explain the job to her you're like oh you got to take care of this and
2:11:21
hello who is this stop calling me here i'm leaving town and there's another
2:11:27
girl who's gonna be here all by herself and she'll kill you and then she like would hang up
2:11:34
wouldn't that be so much better of a premise for this movie these should be the family that leave and then they hire
2:11:39
a house sitter because they're jerks they're just like all right just stay in this house
2:11:44
and just hope for the best don't worry about it we just need someone to open the windows
2:11:49
every now and then there might be a monster in the well but uh you know just don't worry about
2:11:55
it just call someone on the weird spooky phones i'm so that's like
2:12:00
not related but when you were first describing this i know it's i know it isn't christian wiig
2:12:06
but i i thought you were going to talk about kristen stewart uh snl totino's
2:12:12
like fake commercial oh yeah which is also strange what if they such a funny sketch
2:12:20
yes no it can be funny sometimes yeah it was two christians it was kristen stewart and kristen wiig i
2:12:26
believe yeah yeah and that house sitter well maybe i don't know i could be misremembering and then i
2:12:32
don't want to have to edit this out well you don't want to just take it or don't whatever the skill exists that's the important
2:12:37
part anyway uh then nathan goes into his room and
2:12:45
he gives like this horrible speech about the bad smell that's been in the yard
2:12:50
ever since the the color out of space came and he like insults his wife and just
2:12:56
brings oh you know the cancer yeah you know all about that you know you know that smell that rotten milk smell
2:13:03
jesus christ okay so here's the thing okay so i'm gonna do a little comparison i actually have
2:13:08
a little clip from vampire's kiss and then we're gonna compare that to a clip from this movie
2:13:15
of nicholas cage talking about the cancer smell so we're going to start with vampire's kiss now we can contrast
2:13:21
and compare all right so here we go now i just want you to be here and listen to this song and dance that i
2:13:28
have to do that i have to do because you haven't done your job ready
2:13:36
yo hi frank how are you all right also for context in that clip
2:13:41
i mean he calls frank and then frank is just like oh no everything's cool and then you know nicholas cage has to pretend to be super mad about it because
2:13:48
you know he wants to torture his assistant alva the whole movie should just be called like torturing alva a poor woman
2:13:56
alvaro okay so all right here's the one from this movie i've been smelling it ever
2:14:02
since the night that thing hit the farm it's like the black mold and the
2:14:08
basement it's exactly the same smell as the cancer war where my father was you
2:14:13
know death disinfectant they can't just smell rotting milk you know the smell you know they can't smell better than anybody now the dog is vanished off the
2:14:20
face of the earth so connect those dogs by the way he's just like oh yeah the dog's probably dead we can't find the
2:14:26
dog okay i love that he says it right in front of his son he's just like whatever
2:14:32
the dog's dead who cares shut up okay those two voices are completely different
2:14:38
oh you think so all right yeah okay all right wait wait wait step on my whole thing
2:14:43
i'm sorry i'm sorry the first one is more like theatrical
2:14:49
and the second one i'm sorry it's very donald trump yeah you know
2:14:54
what in retrospect it takes kind of a trumpy direction i don't know why he does that
2:15:00
i don't know but they both do that thing we're just kind of like you kind of nero you you missed we need to you know like
2:15:06
kind of a thing i don't know yeah it's something that nicholas cage occasionally chooses to do as an actor
2:15:14
yeah i mean like to be clear they're not like a coded reference in the movie the voice
2:15:20
just sounds like that it's just a weird i don't know what to do yeah it's yeah it's clearly not like an
2:15:26
intentional thing but just like if you hear it it's like yeah that's that's true
2:15:34
all right so the next morning nathan is in better spirits i guess even though he's covered
2:15:40
in hives ever since he took a shower it just ruins his skin and for the whole rest of the movie it just
2:15:45
gets scalier and scalier and just worse and worse i honestly i can relate to that too
2:15:52
because i had like a foot that was like that for a while yeah that's too bad yeah no it's not no it's
2:15:58
not great but uh he did the thing with this thing where he like just like dipped his like
2:16:04
fingers in his drink and he was just like rubbing his arm and i'm like yeah i can relate to that that's
2:16:11
yeah i've rubbed booze on my wounds not booze because like jesus and then
2:16:17
maybe would sting i don't know but uh yeah yeah like water or whatever if you're just like drinking a glass of
2:16:23
water feel your skin acting up nathan is he's out in the garden
2:16:29
and he's just covered in weird space insects all the garden is covered in weird space and sex and the
2:16:34
tomatoes are suddenly ripe and enormous he's like oh a month early this is great
2:16:42
and then there's this weird scene where teresa and nathan both get really mad at each other really quickly because
2:16:47
teresa's a day trader as we've already established and she's she needs that wi-fi to live you know to really to
2:16:53
support the whole house and she says she's like hemorrhaging customers or clients or whatever just
2:16:59
because she cut her fingers off you know like she couldn't tell everyone like oh i have to take half a day because my fingers were
2:17:06
severed i had to get them put back on you know like you guys just chill for a couple of hours i guess they were just
2:17:12
like no i think the market cares about that yeah i guess not you know the market's uh just a as indifferent and
2:17:20
as the raging ocean you know just they don't care about nothing
2:17:30
yeah so she goes downstairs and yells at nathan for not checking the satellite
2:17:37
dish even though he did it's just the color is messing up the signal you know she's just looking for someone to
2:17:43
blame and he's not listening to her he's biting into tomatoes and just spitting
2:17:48
them out and getting childishly angry and then like slam dunking each tomato into the trash can
2:17:58
it's great it went from like zero to nuts real quick with this family you know with like just both of them acting real real
2:18:05
strange yeah also just from like
2:18:10
an acting standpoint that was probably very fun to do yeah
2:18:16
just slam in tomatoes oh yeah ten points
2:18:22
all right so then nathan puts some contaminated ice in his whiskey and he he rubs it on his wounds and
2:18:28
there's like purpley pink hallucinations in the tv like it's hypnotizing him i think which i think is cool i don't know
2:18:36
i wonder if too many things are happening like maybe it should have been just the hallucinations or maybe just
2:18:41
the contamination in the water it's a little weird that it's both i don't know yeah maybe maybe it's just
2:18:48
she just kind of shows that everything is messing with them every aspect of their lives has been infected
2:18:56
but lavinia has the good sense to plan to run away a spoiler alert she never gets to but i
2:19:01
mean at least she at least she tries the thought occurs to her and she packs her stuff and she's about to go
2:19:08
when she realizes or you know remembers that she has a paperback version of the
2:19:14
necronomicon as you mentioned earlier yeah probably the golden goblin version
2:19:20
which is like well speaking of which i'm talking about this like it's a real thing it's not this is all made up the
2:19:26
book isn't real um i actually wrote a little bit about it here the necronomicon is a book made up by
2:19:33
h.p lovecraft but he freely encouraged his contemporaries in writing to reference it in their own
2:19:39
stories and a lot of them did as a result the necronomicon is almost as famous a fictional book as the
2:19:46
entirety of lovecraft's fiction combined like it's almost a separate entity people just assume it's a real thing it
2:19:53
shows up in movies people like reference it all the time and make fakes of it and recreations and whatever
2:20:00
apparently people often incorrectly believe it's real and that it was just referred to
2:20:06
which is great well yeah i mean i mean so like i i can kind of
2:20:12
if you didn't look it up i can kind of see why you might think
2:20:18
that though just because it's so pervasive in pop culture it's in a lot of movies that don't
2:20:24
necessarily need it i mean it's in all of the evil dead movies you know army of darkness
2:20:29
isn't jason goes to hell the final friday the necronomicon just shows up
2:20:34
yep yes everybody you heard correctly the necronomicon is in a friday the 13th
2:20:40
film it's canon in the franchise
2:20:45
there's also a magic dagger in that movie i mean most people choose not to acknowledge anything from that film so
2:20:51
take that with a grain of salt i guess yeah anyway lavinia decides to use the
2:20:57
necronomicon to try to save herself in the family she uses a box cutter to carve glyphs all over her skin
2:21:04
i mean i guess to be intense or something you know yeah yikes i i don't know like i'm not
2:21:10
sure why it's in the movie i guess maybe because it's cool but that's a weird thing to say about self-harm or whatever yeah there's
2:21:18
like a really brief scene early on that kind of alludes to it where she gets stressed out and she like
2:21:23
pinches her skin oh so i think she thinks it's like a thing with her that's how she deals with
2:21:30
stuff yeah yeah i think that was the implication of that being too like explicit about it
2:21:36
yeah well that's going on benny and jack go to investigate a noise in the barn and
2:21:42
there is uh something bad going on in there also to be clear
2:21:48
self-harm uh not cool uh ritual scarification for uh actual magic
2:21:55
that is cool sorry you heard it here first folks
2:22:00
okay so back to what i was saying because this is like the coolest part of the whole movie yeah yeah it is no i
2:22:06
know all the freaking alpacas have fused together in the barn they're like a giant mega alpaca like a an alpaca
2:22:12
voltron they're also enshrouded in pink tendrils of energy so i mean it's not clear
2:22:18
whether or not the alpacas are even a threat i lean on frankly that they aren't i think that
2:22:24
they it was just incidentally that they were all combined you know and it's more like the
2:22:30
the pink tendrils are the real threat yeah i mean i don't even know what those things
2:22:37
would do i mean they're kind of they look all stuck together yeah yeah yeah
2:22:44
i really appreciated that scene because there was like when i watched these movies i know we're
2:22:49
doing like a podcast of i'll like i'll watch it and kind of
2:22:54
i guess like filmmaker brand on i mean i was like someone the alpacas
2:23:00
showed up i was like that seems like a really specific animal
2:23:05
yeah it's a weird thing to put in your movie yeah so like what's the payoff going to be
2:23:11
for that and then when they they uh you know they did that it's like oh that's the payoff
2:23:18
they look really messed up when you fuse those things together that's great indeed they do jacob indeed they do
2:23:28
yeah so benny outruns jack to the point where teresa has to run out of the house to go pick him up
2:23:34
like the older brother just bolts and like little jack just can't make it he falls
2:23:39
over you know because he's i don't want to call him an idiot but i mean sort of he's not good at staying alive um so so
2:23:47
his mom has to run out there and pick him up and uh the tendrils grab them both and
2:23:53
uh i don't know i'm not sure quite how to describe this i guess they just yeah
2:23:58
they get kind of mixed together sorta you know yeah they become theresa grundle family
2:24:06
yeah brundle philly i actually do have it written as teresa jack from here on out so
2:24:17
got two of your family members mutilated i like that better than in the story of
2:24:24
where like it's really depressing because like the wife just ends up being less horrible
2:24:29
i mean they don't even describe what she is at the end but she's just this thing that the
2:24:36
husband walks away up in the like in the attic and he's like yeah we we'll just deal with that later
2:24:42
i mean that's you know we'll get to that but i mean there's something well yeah yeah but like but yeah yeah but i don't know it like i
2:24:49
don't know it feels like they did more with it here yeah so this is when you realize what kind of
2:24:54
a movie this is truly going to be i mean it went there yeah are they going to mess up a kid
2:25:01
yeah they're going to mess up a kid you know are they going to like fuse him with his mom yeah they did it
2:25:08
yeah so you're either in or you're out you know i mean uh this is a little bit hard for me and
2:25:14
actually the concept okay here's the thing i am a horror fan so i actually i'm not
2:25:19
opposed to this horrible concept it's more the these subsequent scenes because this
2:25:25
goes on for a while for this next little while where you listen to both of them wail and
2:25:31
and moan and jibber you know like they're just they're just in perpetual pain
2:25:38
like they're lost in a nightmare they can't get out of it's it's really hard to
2:25:43
to deal with i mean i feel like it could drive people to like turn the movie off if you're not prepared for that i got
2:25:50
through it okay but i can see people just being like nope i don't want to hear little jackie boy
2:25:56
just whine and call for his dad you know and not be able to see him even though he's sitting next to him
2:26:02
yeah i mean i can't relate to that so
2:26:10
yeah sorry i mean like you know well whatever moving on um yeah they drag it onto the
2:26:17
couch and they try to call for help it doesn't work you know nothing works
2:26:24
nathan tries to start the car but it's not working either so then nicholas cage proceeds to have a full-on freakout
2:26:32
in the car i just love it i just love it
2:26:38
yeah it's really good i recorded it so here we go i'm gonna play this too
2:26:53
[Music]
2:27:00
nicholas i think it went on a little too long no no you need to you need to show the passion
2:27:06
you need to show just how upset are you you just don't see the veritas similar tube of the moment
2:27:14
oh
2:27:20
and the uh the shot immediately afterwards of him stepping out of the car and you
2:27:25
see the yard the pollen and the these great one of my favorite shots it
2:27:32
is a beautiful shot yeah that's what i was thinking of when i wrote that alice in wonderland thing earlier it's just you know because it is really beautiful
2:27:39
it makes it seem like well maybe this isn't i mean maybe this is bad for them but maybe this is good
2:27:44
for a different kind of life you know or something maybe this is just a transition to a new thing and you
2:27:51
know it requires the old thing to die yeah you find it later that's not true but at least for a time there you're
2:27:57
just like well i don't know maybe there's a method to this madness like in the mist it was similar where
2:28:02
like it was just the atmosphere of another universe pouring into ours so you get all the insects and weird stuff
2:28:08
coming through you know which were scary to us but you know we're just normal to whatever planet or universe they're from
2:28:16
it sort of reminds me of uh called cthulhu that one's kind of interesting
2:28:23
the story they need to prove yeah yes yeah the actual story not the many many
2:28:30
games and other things that have also carried that there was a passage here that i uh
2:28:38
i brought up here uh because they like it it gives a similar feeling to that where like it's it's not like
2:28:45
it's bad for the people living here but not necessarily for like what's coming after
2:28:51
yeah gonna read it real quick then the liberated old ones would teach them new ways to shout and kill and revel and
2:28:58
enjoy themselves and the earth would flame with the holocaust of ecstasy and freedom
2:29:05
and it's just like i mean like that's awful but it's like but yeah i mean like
2:29:10
yeah it's just something different that we can't imagine
2:29:15
and it's incompatible with what we are sure
2:29:21
okay so nathan goes back inside and he drags the
2:29:27
you know teresa's jack up to the attic and uh just locks him away for a while and then he grabs the shotgun and goes
2:29:34
to uh to put down that wad of alpacas in the barn and you know honestly they die pretty easy and i kind of feel bad about
2:29:40
it you only get one good look at them and i kind of love it it looks like a monster from john carpenter's the thing
2:29:46
you know like just a mass of limbs and heads and stuff yeah
2:29:52
it's a good puppet or whatever it is some kind of practical thing i believe and yeah it looks great i wish there was
2:29:57
more of that in films in general but yeah i think everyone's admitted at
2:30:03
this point that it just can't be done in at least the way things are currently done in the industry you know it just
2:30:08
has to be cgi well yeah that's the thing that's annoying i mean this is like an
2:30:14
overdone anecdote but there's that that sequel they did to the thing
2:30:20
it's a prequel movie also called the thing which is very confusing and it was filmed entirely with
2:30:26
practical effects and then later on the studio came in and was like uh what the hell are you doing yeah well i did see a
2:30:33
little bit of of the clips from the practical effects versions of it they
2:30:38
didn't have a lot of it but what i saw didn't look very good so i wonder if it was just true they're just like well
2:30:44
listen it might have it might have worked but not with what you've made here oh
2:30:50
then maybe you have to remake the whole thing and it maybe would be a lot of money yeah i don't know it's possible also
2:30:55
they only showed bad footage i mean they didn't have time to polish it up so maybe it would have looked better
2:31:01
if you filmed it correctly or lit it better or something i don't know i'm just like from like for like early stuff
2:31:06
on the shoot i think it looks fine it just like it's like i feel like that's the attitude though is that like it has
2:31:13
to be cgi yeah yeah maybe so it's an old argument at
2:31:19
this point we've been having it for no yeah okay we're on the end of this now we're all
2:31:24
we're all resigned to our our cgi fates at this point you know we've mostly oh yeah
2:31:29
no i my last word on this uh okay if you wonder why the iron man suit in
2:31:35
the first iron man movie looks better than all the suits in the other movies it's because there were like practical
2:31:40
props used yeah so yeah like it's just the truth you
2:31:46
know less fun to wear though i mean i think robert downey jr probably enjoyed just
2:31:51
walking around with like you know balls on his face or or chest or whatever just so you wouldn't have to wear that crap
2:31:57
all the time yeah well maybe he should suffer for his art and
2:32:02
by art i mean marvel movies which are not oh whatever
2:32:08
we'll just hate them because they were successful yes yeah actually
2:32:14
you either die a hero or you live long enough to be become the enemy or whatever i forget how that quote works
2:32:22
close enough so lavinia started the movie casting a spell trying to keep theresa safe from
2:32:29
cancer and now here she is forced to abandon her mother and her little brother when
2:32:35
nathan asks them to leave the room so he can kill them with the shotgun
2:32:41
yeah it's a very emotional moment they don't play it correctly because this movie is not really from lavinia's perspective
2:32:48
but it's an interesting little arc she has and they don't really address it too much
2:32:54
she just has to abandon her mom like even though she spent the whole movie wishing her well and you know using her magic to try to protect her
2:33:01
and then you know nicholas cages walks in and it's just like hey i'm gonna shoot your mom get out of the attic you
2:33:06
know and she's just like well i guess we tried so all right go ahead
2:33:12
it's a shame because nathan nicholas cage's character he's uh he's a coward and he just can't bring himself
2:33:19
to do it i don't know maybe i shouldn't say coward i mean he just can't can't kill his wife and child i mean
2:33:25
it's a difficult choice and you know honestly if he had waited it might have just become something that he could have
2:33:30
kept as a pet i mean it seems like it heals up pretty nicely in a little while so yeah maybe it was just gonna become
2:33:36
something else some horrible new thing that they could just live with
2:33:41
uh i don't like that i mean that's what happens in the book right they just put
2:33:47
the mom in the attic because she's like a weird thing yeah but not like as a pet it's more of
2:33:52
like a terrible shameful secret well i mean it can be both
2:33:58
you can have a shameful pet yeah that's true hey clover how's it
2:34:03
going she's asleep don't address your you're going to wake her up and she's going to mess up the
2:34:09
podcast all right oh yeah so lavinia and benny
2:34:15
plan to leave on horseback but comet knows better than to stick around in this mess so he just bolts off before
2:34:20
they can mount him i don't know why but i just find that so funny the horse is just like nope i'm out of here bye
2:34:30
and then the dumbest thing ever happens benny hears his dog that's been missing for a while i don't remember when the
2:34:36
dog becomes missing but at some point in the midst of the color he went missing and now he can hear the
2:34:41
dogs bark down in the well and he's like i've got a good idea i'm going to go down this well right now even though we
2:34:47
were about to leave because we're in mortal danger and my dad is about to kill my mom upstairs i'm just going to
2:34:53
go climb down this well and i'm going to get my dog i just i feel like
2:35:00
i don't know if this feels like a first draft of this scene where like they didn't work it out where they're just
2:35:05
like listen we need this kid to just die we need him to go down that well and we need him to die and they don't really
2:35:13
you know they don't really justify it properly it doesn't really make sense and he just i don't know if he's gonna
2:35:20
just die like why not just kill him some other way like have the thing come out of the well and kill him that would have been nice but no he goes down there and
2:35:27
just finds a bunch of flesh and it just like just pulls him in what was the point of that
2:35:33
he was going to get away to be clear there is not a person on this earth that i love enough that like
2:35:40
if they were down in the well that i would climb down as well to get them not happening even in like normal
2:35:47
circumstances oh well yeah not normal circumstances because like you never
2:35:52
know if they're gonna not be normal because who knows what's down in the well
2:35:57
yeah he could have just lowered a rope but then again it's a dog so it's not like it's gonna get in the rope or anything
2:36:02
or gravity i don't know i think maybe just just don't worry about the dog just come back
2:36:08
later even if you heard your dog down there like maybe just say your goodbyes and get your ass out of there
2:36:14
yeah they say later i think lavinia says when she's starting to lose her marbles a
2:36:20
little bit spoiler i guess that it won't let them leave the color doesn't want them to go
2:36:25
for some reason so maybe just do that have him be like hypnotized so at least then it's not his
2:36:31
fault if he was hypnotized to go in the well and he just threw himself down it that would have been so much cooler and it
2:36:37
wouldn't have been his fault yeah but as it stands he just looks like an idiot what are you what are you
2:36:42
thinking boy you could have gotten away you could have been free
2:36:49
you had a girlfriend in aylesbury or so lavinia said he's like you still have that girlfriend in
2:36:54
aylesbury and he's just like no i she was never my girlfriend and and we haven't talked in months
2:37:00
it would have been so funny if they had gotten away and then that's where they go they just go to like his kind of sort of ex-girlfriend be like hey can i crash
2:37:07
on your floor for a while my parents are dead
2:37:12
i wish more movies did that kind of thing i mean like it's not the same thing but
2:37:17
like i don't know the if you've ever seen that movie green room that has an ending like that
2:37:24
yeah it's very intense yeah and that ending yeah it might as well
2:37:29
just be like ah well all of that just happened here i guess i'll just guess i'll just leave
2:37:34
yeah okay so yeah so benny dies of course he does
2:37:40
and then lavinia flees back to the house nathan comes out looking pretty deranged he grabs lavinia and drags her into the
2:37:47
attic he's lost his marbles at this point after he chooses not to kill
2:37:52
you know the mom and the son he seems to kind of accept his fate and just kind of join the darkness you know like he's
2:37:58
just gonna go with it whatever is happening so he's like okay well
2:38:03
i can't kill my wife but i will feed her my daughter so let's just do that
2:38:10
and at this point it didn't take long but teresa jack has solidified into something functional and dangerous now
2:38:15
it's suddenly able to move around pretty quickly and it seems pretty hungry
2:38:21
like i said you could have kept it as a pet you know maybe maybe should have handcuffed it to a radiator or something
2:38:28
i don't know i okay i guess what i feel like this comes down to is that we like
2:38:33
fundamentally disagree on what the concept of a pet is well okay i don't know i was just thinking of finding a
2:38:39
way to keep it alive but is it human at that point i guess it sort of talks a little bit so maybe it
2:38:45
is still them but i don't know how much it is anymore i don't know it's not clear they're not
2:38:50
very good about establishing what it does to people when it combines them from an ethical standpoint you should
2:38:56
probably treat it as you know a person yeah
2:39:02
in an earlier scene wade the hydrologist and sheriff pierce found some pretty funky roadkill near the gardner farm
2:39:10
it's like a bunch of animals just all mixed together like a like a katamari ball or something like oh there's a dog
2:39:16
in there and there's a cat and all kinds of stuff so you know they go to his house and
2:39:22
nathan just invites them in i mean at this point he's just totally lost his mind and he started to
2:39:27
started to hallucinate that teresa's downstairs with him even though she's upstairs as a monster i guess he's
2:39:34
dissociating from reality he's just kind of descending into his own fantasy
2:39:41
but lavinia is still in the process of being attacked by her own mother who's trying to eat her i guess
2:39:47
and uh you know nathan doesn't care but wade and sheriff are like hey i think
2:39:52
something weird might be happening upstairs could we just go have a little peek
2:39:57
just like yeah sure i guess whatever you know
2:40:02
so yes they go in there and nathan of all people finishes theresa jackoff he has
2:40:09
to shoot both heads which is a nice touch you know that like it doesn't fully die until you kill it two
2:40:14
different ways both of its brains must die kind of a bummer you have to watch
2:40:20
little jack die but you know what i never liked him anyway so
2:40:25
yeah i was gonna say like why are you what's the bumper for you yeah i mean earlier they were saying like the mom
2:40:31
seems to be absorbing him and i was just like good do it
2:40:37
you never should have come out of her in the first place you're a mistake
2:40:43
i'm sorry that's a little hostile i'm sorry little jack
2:40:49
all right teresa jack is dead and lavinia has been attacked
2:40:55
and she's covered in her own self mutilation you know glyph cuts
2:41:00
and so they pick her up they're gonna take her to a hospital or whatever and then nathan is hypnotized by the
2:41:06
well to shoot wade with the shotgun i think i mean you
2:41:11
can correct me if i'm wrong here i'm not positive but i think that's what was about to happen
2:41:17
and then the sheriff shoots nathan in in the back to stop him yeah that's that's about how
2:41:24
i thought it went down yeah so i guess it was a mind control thing with nathan anyway not the sheriff yeah
2:41:31
i don't know nathan isn't too upset about it he compares his wound to a flower which i thought was kind of poetic
2:41:36
yeah it's like a flower his delusions seem to make him cool with whatever at this point so you know
2:41:43
sure i got shot that's not so bad so okay let's
2:41:49
let's put things on pause for a moment and we need to reevaluate the state of things in this movie
2:41:54
teresa jack and benny are now dead the dog is dead the alpacas are dead
2:42:01
the horse ran away even the cat g-spot is dead or gone
2:42:07
nathan is dying of a gunshot wound lavinia is covered in self-afflicted cuts and was just almost murdered by
2:42:14
teresa jack the only two able-bodied men men with responsibilities mind you
2:42:20
hear a noise out by ezra shack and want to leave lavinia behind with her dying
2:42:26
father to go investigate are you are you kidding me right now like how
2:42:32
i feel like everyone's motivations just fall apart at the end of the movie and they're just like listen we need to separate a couple more times before this
2:42:39
ends i heard a noise let's go investigate a noise tommy chong is in danger
2:42:46
i could see the sheriff splitting off it just like it doesn't make sense for wade to do the same well if you're thinking
2:42:52
of like medical triage we already have two people who are in bad shape you know nathan's dying i
2:42:58
mean he might already be about to die it's not clear i mean he's on his way out but lavinia needs medical attention
2:43:03
so if they were to save ezra they would probably lose lavinia by
2:43:08
saving ezra i don't know maybe they were being optimistic that she would be okay but she was just attacked by a
2:43:14
cannibalistic mother monster so i don't know if she got a bunch of wounds from that or not i just feel like they should just cut
2:43:20
their losses and be like listen he's some weird old squatter i mean i don't want to judge
2:43:26
but i mean we just don't really got time to be going out there right now wow i think it's uh kind of messed up to
2:43:32
uh make that kind of calculus with people's lives especially when one of them is
2:43:37
chong tommy chong america's favorite i know okay it's funny i
2:43:44
actually did like that he showed up in this movie but gun to my head i don't think you could
2:43:49
get me to like come up with like a chichen chang movie that i actually liked watching i don't know if i ever
2:43:55
did either but i wonder if it was big for people when it came out my parents generation seemed to really
2:44:02
enjoy it but even they yeah after the fact that they were like oh i don't like it now so i
2:44:07
wonder if it had a very temporal you know like temporary thing like it was uh
2:44:13
very timely and thus didn't stand up at all yeah
2:44:20
next time on gorman on gore [Music]
2:44:28
i'm gonna have a lot of question marks as i describe this this old man is laying into this kid with that pipe
2:44:41
and he just cuts open his leg very graphically and you just watch him do it it's actually really great
2:44:53
what the hell is going on that's exactly what the audience is saying at this point you're just like i
2:44:58
don't know what this is the old guy is watching the movie he speaks for all of us
2:45:04
the iron [Music]
2:45:16
i don't think anyone's decisions at the last third of this film makes sense
2:45:21
well nobody but the horses comet had the right idea but he just
2:45:27
just gonna get the hell out of here i mean it seems like it worked out oh no it definitely did i wish there was
2:45:34
like an end credits scene where you just see the horse just running around in the woods fancy free wow this is amazing
2:45:42
so sheriff pierce and ward go to ezra shack to save him you know they can hear him talking loudly that's how they knew
2:45:48
he was there they heard a noise out by his shack turns out it's a recording of his voice saying weird stuff about the
2:45:55
color it's sort of the movie trying hastily to explain it i don't know that it really
2:46:01
succeeds i mean i guess it's sort of like tommy chong's theories about what he thinks it is but it's kind of more
2:46:07
abstract philosophical assertions than facts you know i mean it's not like ezra knew
2:46:13
anything well maybe he did no maybe he did no no he didn't it's
2:46:18
just a color but it burns honestly
2:46:25
i that's a great trailer line yeah
2:46:31
it's cool yeah i mean he just kind of theorizes that it's like sucking up an area so
2:46:36
it's slightly different from the book in the book as you were saying it just kind of shows up it causes some mischief kind of
2:46:42
incidentally and then it leaves yeah whereas this thing it seems more like it's draining a whole area dry like it
2:46:48
just takes everything so i guess the mutations are all sort of
2:46:54
incidental as it's taking over everything so i guess the mind control and all of that is just encouraging
2:46:59
stuff to stay long enough to be sucked up into it
2:47:04
okay i have an interesting or i mean like maybe interesting to me i don't know
2:47:10
maybe nobody else can do this [ __ ] so i feel like the ambivalence
2:47:16
of the greater power encountered by the characters in the lovecraft story is
2:47:23
fairly crucial to a story being considered lovecraftian
2:47:29
yeah i mean that's the thing that is difficult about these movies i like lovecraft in story form
2:47:35
but in movies the bleakness doesn't make it as fun
2:47:41
because in order to prove the ascendancy of these cosmic beings it has to come at the expense of
2:47:48
most of the human characters to really prove how insignificant people are they
2:47:53
have to be laid low pretty thoroughly you they have to be completely ineffective
2:48:00
you know which in some ways that hurts the story structure for a traditional arc especially with characters you're
2:48:05
supposed to like there's clearly a malevolence with this thing
2:48:11
that there isn't in what you would consider to be like typically like the lovecraftian
2:48:17
horror of like yeah i wonder if that's the thing that's always bothered me about catholic horror films
2:48:23
is that it's so self-centered that sounds really insulting i'm sorry but what i mean is that
2:48:29
you know when it's like the devil it's like i'm here to ruin your life you know like your life is so important and i'm
2:48:36
gonna ruin it yeah whereas with lovecraft you know it's like oh i found this horrible thing and if you were able
2:48:42
to talk to it you know it would be like who are you what i don't care about you
2:48:48
like what like what's going on oh i was bothering you whatever listen i'm i'm running on yeah a
2:48:55
millennial long schedule i don't even i didn't even know you were sentient i
2:49:00
thought you were just like fungus or something yeah or like uh the shadow out of time i
2:49:07
feel like it's that's an underrated lovecraft story that one's great for that because it's like oh hey uh your
2:49:13
life was uh completely ruined and overridden by canadian intelligence for
2:49:20
years for no particular reason they just needed a body you were just what they got yeah you
2:49:26
were unlucky you didn't even like it's not even wrong place wrong time it was just lotto
2:49:33
which one was it the at the mountains of madness where they proved that the human race was just like some
2:49:39
bastard offspring of gross slave people that they brought to do work for them
2:49:45
yeah yeah i mean like is that depressing yeah that's the like that one's like
2:49:52
that's almost more because i like you know people at the time
2:49:58
were like struggling with the idea of for just apes or whatever but like it would be
2:50:04
so much worse if we were just an unintended consequence yeah which by the way is part of why i
2:50:10
kind of like prometheus because it seems like the human race is just an unintended consequence of some guy
2:50:16
committing suicide in a river a long time ago yeah oh god i think i don't know that
2:50:22
movie's weird so yeah i do kind of like that movie like the look of disgust on the engineer's face
2:50:28
well yeah when he sees the people that woke him up you know they're just like what is it yeah it was like
2:50:34
you know yeah and then like their like machine comes up and starts talking to them and it's like hey we're like you we
2:50:41
made something and he's just like i have to kill this okay like like have no time
2:50:48
well no well it's not even like that it's just like the idea of them being around is so
2:50:54
disgusting to him like now it's like there's currency in this i got
2:50:59
and i think it's going to be an ongoing theme especially in more kind of sci-fi-ish horror
2:51:05
at least good ones there's this weird indifference of the stars you know that like in the grand scheme of things
2:51:11
that everything that you've ever hoped and cherished is just nothing it's dust yeah oh you know what taps into
2:51:17
something that's very interesting it's a little bit more pure isle than that but this relates back to uh
2:51:25
we're watching this on shutter or at least i am streaming the service i actually bought this when i was on
2:51:31
vacation so this is like in my private collection oh okay yeah maybe i should i
2:51:36
but i also i watched another uh shutter thing called uh the spine of night
2:51:42
and it's a little bit like it's like fantasy horrorish in sort of like
2:51:49
you remember that old animated anthology movie heavy metal oh yeah i do
2:51:55
okay it's like it's like that yeah but like
2:52:01
that's one of those classic boner like juvenile boy animated movies yeah
2:52:08
oh you'd better believe the uc just shot after shot of like rotoscope lucy
2:52:16
wallace's tits in this movie all right it's no so like they're clearly like going
2:52:23
off of the same there's the same dna there
2:52:28
okay it like it deals with similar ideas of cosmic irrelevance and
2:52:36
how awful it would be to learn that you know
2:52:41
that's always fun speaking of uh cosmic uh it's
2:52:46
it's alright okay that's good to know oh yeah maybe i'll look it up yeah what was i saying speaking of cosmic irrelevance
2:52:53
the sheriff is rather unceremoniously dispatched by a medicated tree branch it just like reaches up and grabs him
2:53:00
yeah i mean i didn't know the trees were doing that but i guess this one is so yeah now the sheriff's dead i mean not
2:53:07
the worst way to be killed by a tree no um he dies pretty quick he has something
2:53:12
go through his face and then he's dead you know i mean considering how bad some of these deaths
2:53:17
have been i feel like that was kind of a mercy you know maybe this is for the best if you're gonna die that's not too
2:53:23
bad i was gonna say that the sheriff was useless but he did shoot nathan and save
2:53:30
ward's life so uh you know hooray for him i guess sorry man rest in peace
2:53:37
yeah all right so ward runs away and he finds lavinia out by
2:53:42
the well despite her incantations it seems the color has finally corrupted her she's
2:53:48
like literally glowing her eyes are glowing it looks pretty cool it's in a lot of the trailers and stuff
2:53:55
in order to cement that it's a strange lovecraft movie she shows him a mental glimpse of the color out of space in its
2:54:02
home world and just like what it was like in its environment
2:54:08
it has some like 2001 color stuff too you know there's a bit of that and that's always good that's it's good fun
2:54:14
and then the color out of space emerges from the well and just hurtles out into the clouds i mean
2:54:19
you said in the story it leaves and and here it also leaves it's just kind of like well this is good enough i've killed enough of you i guess i'll go now
2:54:27
minor detail do you remember the name of the horse well i wrote comment hey let me check
2:54:33
it's it's in the cast list uh yeah the okay so there's two horses that played that horse in the movie it's
2:54:39
comet the horse it was played by zabanga the horse and uh ulysses the
2:54:45
horse the only reason i i don't even know why i remember this in the uh
2:54:51
in the story when the unnamed surveyor is uh fleeing the the color as it's
2:54:57
leaving the property he uh rides out on a horse named hero that was kind of funny amazing no man
2:55:05
ward should have gotten on the horse that would have been a great ending i wonder if they shot that and i couldn't get it
2:55:11
yeah i i was a little disappointed because like the ending in the color out of space is like
2:55:17
pretty evocative of like just like this like huge upheaval as this guy is
2:55:24
like fleeing on a horse like across the bridge
2:55:31
yeah that's like i don't know like it feels like a good moment for film so i just you know why
2:55:38
they do that probably would have been hard to shoot the the fleeing horse thing and then having to put the cgi
2:55:43
cloud of stuff coming after it i guess yeah instead it absorbs lavinia
2:55:49
it just kind of disintegrates her right then and there or maybe maybe she joins it you know
2:55:54
it's one of those things where it's like maybe it was good it happened but probably not uh yeah almost certainly not
2:56:02
oh that's right instead of ward fleeing on a horse he goes into the house and he sees like phantoms of the whole gardner
2:56:07
family and they all say weird dreamy things to him you know like nathan says something in lavinia's voice
2:56:13
like hey you looking at my legs he's like no i wasn't looking at your legs the first time it was your boots
2:56:20
they had cool things on them and i wanted to look at your boots you didn't let me finish and now you're
2:56:26
dead i really liked you even though you're probably 10 years younger than me or
2:56:33
something i don't know what the range was supposed to be oh no i i was just going to say i really
2:56:39
liked your invaders in sticker on your boot
2:56:45
i'm not sure why but i really like seeing them maybe it means that their consciousnesses were part of something
2:56:51
greater even if it is just in the thrall of some horrible cosmic creature maybe
2:56:56
maybe they actually got on to hail bop you know and they're actually they're in some kind of weird monster heaven now
2:57:03
that that doesn't sound good at all peter well maybe not sounds really bad
2:57:10
yeah okay well i guess it depends you know philosophically and theologically like
2:57:15
where you stand on stuff i don't really believe i'm gonna go anywhere i don't know i don't want to alienate people
2:57:21
saying that so like i would prefer monster heaven over non-existence i'd rather continue to exist in some form
2:57:28
greedily you know uh if i could put my like if i could put my mind into a
2:57:34
robocop body i would do that i would go into a computer i would do all of those things i would
2:57:40
trap myself in a book like harry potter style you know any of that okay i would agree to some of that but
2:57:46
like i don't know man forever is a long time to be with yourself
2:57:52
well i guess we don't know what the nature of the relationship would be but it does seem like you're kind of trapped in a dreamy
2:57:57
nightmare place so yeah maybe maybe that's not so good
2:58:03
yeah sometimes that is better dad's better
2:58:08
i can't do like x voice no it's it's it's hard it's because it's the the monsters guy and he's all doing a main
2:58:15
accent you know it's two different kinds of voices i can't do so yeah
2:58:21
a lot of history down that road this is up a lot of animals see no yeah you can do it like that yeah
2:58:30
yeah anyway anyway that's a pet cemetery reference guys check it out he's actually really
2:58:37
good in that uh whatever that guy's name is the herman munster guy rest in peace that guy
2:58:44
okay so why why wade hides in the center he says ah i'm getting tired now okay one more time
2:58:51
wait we're almost there we're almost there wade hides in the cellar
2:58:57
he emerges from the ruins of the gardner house like shortly thereafter and everything is now white ash all the
2:59:04
plant life in every direction has crumbled to dust in the night or was absorbed as the color left
2:59:10
it i'm almost afraid to say it but it reminds me of the end of predator 2 when danny glover comes out out of the ashes
2:59:18
after the ship takes off a classic movie if ever there was one
2:59:23
i was going to describe it as some sort of blasted heath
2:59:29
i think it's actually mentioned as such i remember that phrase but i don't remember what it meant
2:59:35
yeah it's a lovecraft reference right to like one of the stories or something it kind of looks like oh oh well all
2:59:43
right well it makes sense yeah interestingly it does look like the
2:59:48
tanguska how we call it you know like the that huge explosion in russia that wiped out
2:59:54
like a huge circle of trees i think they found out later that that was a comet that came to earth and then
3:00:00
exploded just above the tree line and so it blew all these trees down and just killed all
3:00:06
the life in every direction i prefer to think that it was a it was a test weapon of an alien device but yeah
3:00:13
whatever it's one of those things like the dialotov pass incident where like
3:00:19
if you look at i don't know three-fourths of the evidence it's like well there's gotta be some sort of supernatural thing going on
3:00:26
but then like there's like an actual explanation that's like oh that kind of sucks yeah
3:00:31
although honestly i mean if it was an exploding comet that is equally astounding that's just a weird
3:00:37
thing to have happen oh yeah yeah yeah yeah okay so
3:00:43
the whole movie over the course of the whole movie it had been alluded to in clips and you know whenever the mayor was speaking
3:00:50
that she was erecting a huge dam to supply drinking water to all of arkham or massachusetts or wherever
3:00:57
now that the horrors at the gardner estate are over the dam is built in earnest and fresh water is
3:01:04
available for everybody hooray let's all have a big frothy glass of
3:01:10
brackish water i mean i guess that is the real message of the movie is uh
3:01:18
invest in infrastructure well the color out of space probably left so it's it's probably okay
3:01:25
but it might not be but even i don't know like what are you gonna do to stop it
3:01:32
i don't know i prefer to think that it's just as bad there as it was and everyone's doomed you know like the
3:01:37
whole state they're all just gonna become monsters or something well i mean the fact that everything
3:01:43
turned all to ash kind of uh makes me feel like the presence is just gone
3:01:49
yeah i guess that's true so i mean maybe the whole idea of the dam is undermined by the ash maybe they shouldn't have
3:01:55
done that they should have made it just kind of seem gone but they're not sure that would have been way more frightening because then they could have
3:02:01
had scenes where ward is like trying really hard to get people to not make the damn and they're just like forget it
3:02:07
man it's chinatown you know that whole thing that was about water too guys look it up
3:02:15
also if you want an ending another horror movie ending with uh polluted water dooming everybody you can
3:02:21
see cabin fever by eli roth i'll leave it at the
3:02:27
we're not doing that one you know there's two versions of that movie there's a remake and it looks exactly the same as the first movie i
3:02:34
don't know why they made it it must have been like some weird money-making scheme or something
3:02:39
wait hold on i mean with pancakes i don't it's like a shot for shot it's
3:02:45
almost a shot for shot i don't know if it has the pancakes kit in both let me you know what i'm going to look that up because that's important this pancakes
3:02:52
kit yeah no all right got it you got it uh what do you do well don't worry while you're doing that
3:02:59
let's go guys we're almost over we're almost there hope you had fun
3:03:06
yeah all right i had fun well i don't know i know it exists but
3:03:12
let me just i'm looking up the wikipedia right now let's see uh
3:03:17
let's see the general story dennis bites burst hands just as he did with paul okay
3:03:24
okay so the a kid does bite his hand i don't know if he says pancakes so i'm not you know i can't prove it
3:03:31
the remake is incredibly boring and is not worth seeing i mean the first movie honestly is it's not worth saying but
3:03:38
you know the remake is easy i mean yeah well i mean the um
3:03:44
the movie was kind of fun for being like a gross out thing but uh yeah i guess that's what it was going for i
3:03:51
you were so excited to show me that movie the first time
3:03:56
yeah i feel like there's a time in every man's life when he wants to show someone else
3:04:01
cabin fever i mean that was the song i don't mind
3:04:08
i mean it was funny yeah but just like explicitly you were excited to show it
3:04:14
to me because of the pancake scene and i remember like yeah well i mean the pancake scene is so good
3:04:20
if you haven't seen the movie no it is but look it up look up the pancake scene from captain fever
3:04:26
out of context it makes no sense in context it's literally unbelievable in the sense
3:04:33
that we could tell you what's happening in the scene and you wouldn't believe it
3:04:38
yeah but yeah i just remember like like seeing it and like i
3:04:45
did not get it the way that you got it and i was just like peter this is dumb as hell yeah
3:04:52
maybe i should describe it a little bit okay so a boy a slow boy
3:04:58
does karate and only says pancakes and then he attacks someone and bites
3:05:03
them while they're saying no no kid no pancakes you know and uh yeah and that wasn't a movie
3:05:09
i mean there's no preparation for that or context really it's you know we're very little
3:05:15
so it's yeah it's like an internet meme before that was a thing before there was a reason for it
3:05:21
to be like that yeah god if the movie you're like pancakes
3:05:26
i feel like maybe if the movie released like five years later or something oh yeah it
3:05:32
would have blown up yeah okay so it was just kind of like on the on the cusp of that anyway yeah
3:05:39
so the movie's over the last shot of the movie shows that weird little pink mantis flying over the title of the film
3:05:46
so okay so the ash is gone or the ash shows the color is gone but the mantis
3:05:52
decided to stay uh so i guess they're still doomed or maybe it's just threatening that you know it's
3:05:59
possible i suppose i guess yeah i didn't like that
3:06:05
you don't like a threatened sequel or whatever or just uh nothing well not to one where the story is so
3:06:12
like definitively over i guess that's true it's very final
3:06:17
yeah and there you have it jacob there you have it everyone
3:06:22
that's that's right color out of space it's got 86
3:06:29
on rotten tomatoes i would not have guessed that i don't think it's worth that but i'm
3:06:35
glad it was well received i suppose well by those who saw it and he said it
3:06:41
only made a million dollars so i um i feel like maybe they were preaching to the converted you know on this one
3:06:48
probably it's got 70 percent on metacritic though so critics kind of liked it 6.1 out of 10 on imdb
3:06:56
relatively well received a question for you
3:07:01
sure since we we finished this one up i mean this might be obvious because i
3:07:07
mean it's obvious for me but maybe not for you what do you think your favorite
3:07:12
movie adaptation of a lovecraft story is well that's a tricky question because a
3:07:18
lot of lovecraftian movies aren't strictly from the stories so do you mean
3:07:23
something directly from a story or do you mean something that's kind of in the style directly from the stories
3:07:30
that's a little harder like like the other yeah the adaptation doesn't have to be like super accurate but like at the bare
3:07:37
minimum it needs to have like the title the name yeah um probably reanimator i
3:07:42
think it might be my favorite see i want to say my favorite lovecraft movie is in the mouth of madness but
3:07:48
that's not strictly lovecraft it's just very similar you know it's in the it's in the
3:07:53
theme of it yeah we're going to join horizon i love that too but it's not really a lovecraft
3:07:59
story actually yeah i'd have to agree with you on all three counts um i mean uh but yeah directly off of it
3:08:06
uh i don't know i kind of like dagon but i think it it drags a little too much
3:08:12
it's like so much running away from fish people and in smooth you know like it's so much running
3:08:18
yeah i mean that one has like fun stuff like the i don't know fish lady
3:08:23
which was just like wild it was pretty weird um yeah that that
3:08:29
movie by the way for the audience that's about a boy whose birth right is to become a fish and mate with a bunch of
3:08:35
fish people and you know he doesn't know this and so he goes to a gross little seaside town
3:08:40
and he gets chased around by people not realizing that he's one of them and that he's part of some kind of prophecy to
3:08:47
mate with a fish queen or whatever right so like in the original story it's very like that's i mean well first of all
3:08:54
it's uh i think actually i think it's the shadow over inspect that they take the yeah that's
3:08:59
what it's called but yeah yeah the thing is in the movie though the
3:09:04
fish queen lady that he's like she's like hot though i mean yeah
3:09:12
i guess well so what i'm saying is it feels less like nightmarish to be like oh here's you're like going to be like
3:09:19
an important ruler in undersea kingdom and also you get to
3:09:24
mate with like a hot lady i don't know if that's necessarily see i don't know if it's necessarily a horror story in
3:09:29
that sense i think it's more like you being thrust into a destiny you're not ready for that you didn't know about
3:09:36
it's almost like a coming-of-age tale except you're going into some unknowable cosmic horror you know or whatever
3:09:42
go you gotta throw your whole life yeah compare that with like looking into a mirror in horror as you
3:09:50
realize oh i'm getting some really fishy features and like a strong desire to like
3:09:55
swim out some terrible undersea grotto fertilize some heat that sucks
3:10:01
yeah so that sucks but like in the day god movie it's like i mean
3:10:08
sucks your other girlfriend died but like i mean this new stuff you have going on can't be that bad oh boy yeah i
3:10:15
think they were just trying to sexy it up a little bit or i don't know i had some wonder i don't know
3:10:22
maybe yeah it's an okay movie i think it was made for like sci-fi or something it's
3:10:28
you know it's a little cheap but yeah it's it's acceptable i think it's a foreign film
3:10:34
i don't know i don't know yeah it does feel that way there's an awkwardness to it
3:10:40
yeah i like it too but yeah i mean yeah you compare that to reanimator and that's not even
3:10:46
that even close so i don't think richard stanley is going to be able to make the other two movies he wanted for
3:10:52
this uh yeah probably not but how did you feel about this movie
3:10:57
jacob what's your what's your rating on a one to ten scale i kind of feel bad doing this i would
3:11:03
say it's a six oh you wanted to give it more the thing is that well yeah kind of i mean like
3:11:09
because the movie has a lot of stuff that i like in it but like yeah
3:11:14
i don't know i guess maybe it should have gone harder on some of the psychedelic stuff
3:11:21
maybe that would have like done it for me maybe a little bit more cohesiveness in
3:11:26
how the color acts and protects the family yeah the rules are very the stuff with all these
3:11:33
yeah yeah it's like a lot of little things that you could improve on
3:11:38
as much as i like the character ezra he like exists for two scenes
3:11:44
yeah and really at the end he's just there to get the sheriff killed basically to just go looking for him it
3:11:51
doesn't amount to hell no it give another pass or two
3:11:57
on the writing or whatever and also don't be afraid to do the i don't know the beyond the black rainbow
3:12:03
thing where it's just like yeah we're just gonna like have like weird psychedelic imagery and that will
3:12:09
be the plot sure yeah i mean yeah you can go real weird with these lovecraft stories and it's not out of character
3:12:15
for the story you can just be as weird as you like yeah i mean yeah i don't hate it i like it but i just i
3:12:23
can't read it very high yeah um i give it
3:12:28
i give it a five out of ten the plot and motivations kind of fall apart at the end and that really bothers
3:12:34
me i don't like a movie that doesn't end well and well i don't like a bad ending but
3:12:39
that's that's besides the point i actually just mean like it just doesn't tie up it seems like almost everyone's motivations kind of fall apart as it
3:12:46
goes along personally i'm irritated that the monster had to mess with technology and
3:12:52
wanted to keep people from leaving we've already talked about how you know lovecraft
3:12:58
stories are good about the indifference of these creatures and like how they just don't care
3:13:03
we're just like in their wake rather than as part of some kind of vile plan at least one that involves us
3:13:11
sure however all of the effects are really good when she cuts off her fingers you know trees
3:13:18
they really do look like real fingers the alpaca monster looks great the the color space looks cool
3:13:25
yeah but yeah it all looks pretty good i don't like the theresa jack thing that
3:13:31
just listening to the moan for however long that was it was like five or ten minutes
3:13:36
it felt like a very long time the effects of it looked really good
3:13:41
the idea of it was so unpleasant i don't know i i'm not sure what i would have done to have changed it because it is bizarre it
3:13:48
sticks in your mind which is good but it's i don't know maybe i'm too much of a softy about the the suffering of
3:13:55
children or something um yeah i think that's the case
3:14:00
the cinematography is lovely the soundtrack is pretty good so yeah you know five out of ten it's
3:14:06
good it's not great i don't know maybe i could see going to a six but i don't like a downer ending a
3:14:13
whole lot even though that is more or less in keeping with lovecraft's stories this isn't too far
3:14:19
a field from any of those short stories they're all kind of like this you know where almost everyone dies yeah people
3:14:25
say that but there are i mean there are like a decent amount of lovecraft stories where like
3:14:31
they do triumph it's usually that they triumph but at a cost yeah they have to be like the the
3:14:36
harbinger of some terrible revelation or something yeah well like i defeated the evil but
3:14:42
also like i'm a nervous wreck for the rest of my life yeah i do like watching nicholas cage cage it
3:14:49
up it was a good time yeah he really elevates the movie with his bizarre antics
3:14:54
i suppose the bleakness of the ending is offset slightly by the uh silly and fantastical nature of how it all gets
3:15:01
so i don't know you might not end up feeling too bad at the end despite how unpleasant some of it is
3:15:08
it could be worse definitely yeah jacob
3:15:14
jacob there are there are 375
3:15:19
plot keywords on imdb for this film jesus christ
3:15:24
this time i cheated i i admit it freely i went through and found my 20 favorite plot keywords
3:15:32
well okay actually at first i some of these i prioritized because they were high in relevance
3:15:39
and then some of these are just because i wanted to so okay now you're going in a second you're
3:15:45
going to be able to guess which ones are relevant and which ones are just chosen at random by me yeah
3:15:51
okay wait hold on i want to like suggest something why don't we just do
3:15:56
that from here on out if we if like a movie has a bunch of tags just pick the favorites
3:16:03
sure you might be disappointed anyway but you know i i did my best here to curate this somewhere no no
3:16:10
well no no i'm just saying that like i feel like like way too often it's just like yep yep yeah
3:16:17
so i don't know some curveballs would be uh appreciated absolutely
3:16:22
okay all right anyway so i'm going to read these in no particular order this is just 20 and
3:16:29
you're gonna be able to guess whether or not you think that people found it relevant or not
3:16:36
higher relevance means that people uh agreed sure okay how about we start with this
3:16:42
uh denim shorts uh wait who the hell
3:16:49
it was lavinia i mean like obviously oh god there's always these perks all right
3:16:56
yeah all right there's something interesting about this i chose this one because this is anti-relevant
3:17:02
okay one of three people found this relevant which i love that means that two people
3:17:09
went out of their way to say it wasn't relevant so it was a contentious issue
3:17:15
how dare you sir actually let me i'm going to cross these out because i don't have them listed
3:17:20
this way on my sheet i don't want to read the same crap again okay uh meteorites
3:17:27
relevant or not relevant i mean obviously relevant yeah this is
3:17:32
maximum relevant four out of four people found that relevant yeah it'd be weird if that wasn't the
3:17:38
case purple praying mantis
3:17:44
it's literally in the movie yeah no it's not relevant that's this one i chose because i thought it was
3:17:49
neat well one person found it relevant enough to mention it
3:17:55
it's so specific uh reference to aldrin on blackwood
3:18:00
not relevant but fun yeah not relevant let's see farm
3:18:07
i guess i mean like the fact that it takes place on a farm isn't exactly like relevant to the movie but it does like
3:18:14
three out of people found it relevant it's pretty high on the list okay why all right
3:18:20
okay cosmic horror yeah obviously relevant yeah one person
3:18:25
found it relevant alexandrian ritual is that relevant jacob
3:18:31
no because that's not what the ritual was yeah i don't why did they list this
3:18:36
it's not relevant yeah no one found it relevant so someone wrote it and everyone else is just like no
3:18:43
oh my god yeah i bet oh my god but there was some [ __ ] who thought they were so clever
3:18:49
putting that in there like yeah a reference to that one to that one line in the movie
3:18:55
yeah well good job yeah milking an alpaca
3:19:01
okay i guess like i mean like it happens in the movie so it should be considered relevant yeah
3:19:07
how often has that ever happened in a movie i know but like but like that's not
3:19:13
relevant to the movie but it does happen in the movie well one person found it relevant so
3:19:19
you know that's well yeah some agreement yeah
3:19:24
uh how about this uh woman explodes wait
3:19:29
oh yeah i guess lavinia kind of goes yeah i was thinking i guess i think she more disintegrates but yeah
3:19:37
and no no one found that relative yeah so someone wrote that and everyone else yeah no
3:19:42
i don't agree with that talking to a peach
3:19:48
okay again like i i don't i don't understand what the metric for
3:19:53
relevance is i guess sure someone found that relevant um yeah nicholas cage
3:19:59
picks up a peach and he talks to it at one point when he was picking them no i know but like
3:20:04
yeah but i mean like this is important jacob no i know but it's like
3:20:10
okay well how about uh finger slicing yeah that's gonna be irrelevant
3:20:15
no no no one found that relevant what only one person wrote that and that's it
3:20:23
actually horseshit what is wrong with these people all right how about the color magenta
3:20:30
anyone find that relevant jacob okay it's true but i don't think anyone's gonna find that relevant one
3:20:37
person did so that's fairly high on the list that any one person bothered to say it was relevant
3:20:44
the maximum so far has been four people so you know one isn't bad i know i'm biting down on my lower lip to like
3:20:50
suppressing the f word all right well well i should just mention this off the
3:20:56
bat uh there's also talking to a tomato sure why not yeah it's just as relevant
3:21:03
as talking to a peach they both got one relevance yeah
3:21:08
almost hitting a cat with a car i mean it happens but it's like too
3:21:14
specific i'm going to say no one person found it relevant so yeah god
3:21:20
it does happen in horror movies a lot there's a lot of car accidents where people narrowly avoid a cat or something
3:21:25
else it's usually a cat i guess that's true yeah that's true all right hydrologist how about that
3:21:33
uh no two people found it relevant it was actually one of the topics wait really
3:21:39
yeah hydrology damn all right how about a alpaca
3:21:44
uh yeah relevant oh absolutely yeah it got three it was one of the tops so yeah
3:21:50
yeah absolutely that's a a defining feature of this film really i mean uh despite its
3:21:56
irrelevance to the story i mean you know it could have been any creature there but yeah i mean no one else is going to be
3:22:01
doing that i guess it stands out okay offhand can you think of any other movie that
3:22:08
features alpacas as prominently well okay there's something i forgot to point
3:22:14
out earlier was that nathan says in the movie that the mayans had alpacas and they knew
3:22:20
what was up it turns out that that's not true i found out later on on imdb that that's a goof
3:22:25
they weren't up in central america and north america they were only down in south america like you know in the incan
3:22:32
empire so it's it's wrong
3:22:38
so if they're limited to that area i was trying to think of like movies i've seen that are in like chile or
3:22:45
or peru or something like that and uh not too many so yeah maybe not
3:22:51
hmm yeah well i don't know yeah maybe that is like something fairly unique to that
3:22:57
movie yeah there's got to be a movie about conquering peru or something or
3:23:03
the empire so i bet you know in that movie there's probably a ton of llamas and alpacas
3:23:09
i guess yeah i don't know i mean i feel like people like alpacas though so it's weird that i can't even as like a joking
3:23:15
reference i don't know all right how about this teenage girl wears a cape all right yeah sure
3:23:23
nope yeah no one found it relevant okay
3:23:28
we only got a couple left implied cannibalism yeah sure
3:23:35
yeah one person found it relevant i mean the mom was gonna eat the daughter or at least we think i mean i don't know
3:23:41
the dad certainly thought so uh okay two left box cutter
3:23:48
uh yeah yeah one person found box cutter relevant and yeah it's
3:23:55
sort of relevant to the story i don't know that it did anything you know the the cutting didn't save lavinia or give
3:24:01
her an edge or even cure her upset stomach i think it didn't really do anything but
3:24:08
maybe it just gave her a cooler death it allowed her to live long enough to be absorbed rather than crushed or killed
3:24:14
or something all right last but not least murder of family
3:24:20
was that relevant jacob uh i feel like people probably look that
3:24:26
up yeah yeah one person found it relevant and yeah and that's actually pretty central
3:24:31
to the story so it should be relevant right yeah okay uh
3:24:36
just want to look up something real quick sure i did
3:24:42
find a movie that seems to strongly feature
3:24:48
alpacas but that's actually not what i was uh oh wait a minute the emperor's new
3:24:53
groove right oh [ __ ] yeah okay this is not even he turns into one of those things i don't
3:25:00
remember which thing oh shoot i think it's a llama network it's like okay i can visually tell them apart in real
3:25:07
life because llamas just look like alpaca mistakes
3:25:14
twisted alpacas uh he's like maybe yeah well i mean like if no seriously if
3:25:19
you look it up i mean i'm like i'm not trying to be like mean but uh let's see
3:25:26
um okay okay actually the color out of space
3:25:31
doesn't like i'm bringing this back looking up the also known as on uh
3:25:38
imdb the colorado space doesn't have many funny
3:25:43
interesting titles i do like that in vietnam they just released the movie uh
3:25:49
as space colors yeah yeah that works yeah yeah i don't know
3:25:55
that's just like it seems like a pretty simplistic way to translate that title anyway
3:26:00
i don't know whatever there's a movie about bolivia called taking care of the sun
3:26:05
that i guess strongly features an alpaca excellent yeah oh you know what i never did the
3:26:11
tagline i mean now that the now the episode's over really oh yeah all right
3:26:16
you want to guess before i tell you uh it's just a color but it burns
3:26:22
yeah that's the thing tommy chung says that but earlier he actually says uh it sucks and it burns and i just thought
3:26:28
that would have been really funny as a tagline [Laughter] wait you said is that
3:26:35
is that actually the uh no um the tagline is
3:26:41
it will consume you oh god that sucks which is a bit of a sad trombone for me
3:26:48
yeah well not great oh yeah i steal it yeah no that sucks try harder also just of note
3:26:56
richard stanley hadn't made a movie in like over 20 years up until well okay not quite at least
3:27:04
like a major movie he in 1996 he almost made the island of dr moreau but then he was fired a couple of
3:27:11
days in oh god that's true yeah yeah it was a whole horrible thing and then he made a
3:27:16
documentary about trying to make that movie which came out in 2014 and was a big hit just a story about him
3:27:24
trying to tell a story yeah and that gave him the clout i guess or the you
3:27:29
know whatever to be able to make color out of space so you know here we are yeah i guess
3:27:35
i like it not very successful yeah love crap movie
3:27:41
yeah but oh my god yeah there's been that movie and then there's like a book
3:27:46
if first of all you should see that particular island of dr moreau movie yes
3:27:53
but yeah it's nuts but more specifically
3:27:59
look up anything describing the whole process around that movie
3:28:04
yeah it's very like apocalypse now you know it's all just madness and it's like
3:28:10
a weird fever dream yeah there are plenty of famous like
3:28:15
nightmare productions but i feel like the island of dr morrow is pretty
3:28:21
singular in how insane it got yeah i think it's like frankenstein movies
3:28:27
where you just shouldn't make that movie i think there's something about movies like that like frankenstein and
3:28:34
the island of dr moreau where it's like body modification it just doesn't seem to
3:28:39
translate well onto cinema it just probably shouldn't be done
3:28:45
i mean this is like the island of dr moreau maybe it's don't cast an egomaniac to play like an insane
3:28:53
egomaniac on an island yeah marlon brando was nuts in that movie
3:28:58
yeah i can kind of see how that would like play into all of his worst
3:29:04
impulses yeah all right yeah well anyway yeah yeah
3:29:09
yeah it's just like hectors need to be constrained like just like don't
3:29:17
i hope we finally do get our big hit cosmic horror film that's not what this
3:29:22
is but i i don't know i feel i still feel like we are yet to hit the big time on lovecraft i think one day
3:29:29
there will be something i don't know what it's gonna be but i think it'll be big when it happens
3:29:35
and it'll it might even start like a trend you know it could become like a genre of its own or something but
3:29:42
yeah but we're not there yet this movie is all right that's so that's what i'll say i think
3:29:48
yeah i mean i think like on that note if i'm gonna like predict anything i think that
3:29:54
whatever that big project will be it probably will be tied specifically to one of those bigger name lovecraft
3:30:01
stories it'll be some sort of weird like i don't know robert eggers lighthouse
3:30:07
thing where it's like yeah it'll be something insane like it'll like be just like yeah like a really
3:30:13
good adaptation of like the cats of ulthar or something where it's like damn
3:30:18
or like nobody will have like predicted it but it's just like some visionary
3:30:25
really liked like that one obscure lovecraft story and that'll be the thing it's not going to be like as much as i
3:30:32
like the idea it's not going to be guillermo del toro doing like out the mountains of that he did try and it
3:30:38
didn't work out which is a shame i think they made it no i know around the same time and they just
3:30:43
couldn't do two ice icy movies i guess i bet that movie would have been awesome
3:30:48
i'm pretty bummed about that it probably would have been but like i wouldn't i just i don't think it would have been
3:30:55
the thing that we were kind of hope speaking of the thing some people consider that to be lovecraftian i guess
3:31:02
because of how unknowable the thing is and it comes from outer space i don't know i don't really count it myself but
3:31:08
i know yeah i mean i get it but i wouldn't count it as lovecraftian
3:31:14
all right
i mean it's good though yeah
3:31:19
all right so uh then we must leave you a dear audience yeah if you made it to the end
3:31:25
consider liking us or leave a nice review or comment you know whatever your your medium is you found us
3:31:32
we're just glad you're with us right jacob
uh yeah no i'll actually go so far as say
3:31:39
